After many tests with tone layouts I went back to this and many other videos you did and I found out that this layout is actually what I was looking for. No peculiar up and downs, all is absolutely understandable and natural. What a relieve. The stainless steel reeds give it richer tone and response too, sooo good :).

Well..on chromatic you can already easily bend every note! But getting rid of those valves made a huge difference!!

Great, talented player! I must say though, when he was bending vs using the button, even whilst playing the blues, the button wasn't choppy as he said. It sounded better and more musical. It's all preference, sure. What's cool is it gives options and so you can play as your soul desires. ;)

I am not a "bending" player, since I don't play blues mostly. The last time I did a bending was in a blues jam with a chromatic model, which is known widely as the easiest one to bend. This Seydel harp makes me want to try more soulful playing. Thanks a lot again, Brendan.

This chrom is HALF-VALVED - like all my harmonicas, diatonic or chromatic. It comes as stock half-valved from the Seydel ordering page: www.seydel1847.de/epages/Seydel1847.sf/sec5f71a47d7a/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Seydel/Products/54480PC/SubProducts/54480PCG

Awesome video, Brendan!! Might you direct me to a video that explains the physics of how/why notes bend and why they overblow/overdraw? I heard you mention reed pairing in a different video, and id love to know more

I really like the idea for this tuning, but does removing the valves from a chromatic make it more difficult to play since it's less airtight?

I own a few chroms. My Seydel has a cross slide whereas my Hohner is a straight slide. Both sound good, but I actually prefer a straight slide over a cross slide.

I'm thinking of trying out power chromatic. The thing I can't decide is how to conceptualise it. In my "headspace", should I view it as a C6 and a D6, (a harp with an F sharp) or as an F6 and a G6. Personally (and I think I represent the majority of players here), when playing harmonica, I visualise everything as if I'm on a C harp. So when playing in third position, I'm playing in D minor in my head, regardless of whether that's a G chromatic in 3rd position (A minor), or a B flat diatonic (C minor). In my head, I'm playing in D minor. With this harp layout then, I need to decide in what key I'm going to "think in", essentially "which harp is the C harp". I think it makes more sense to think of an F6 G6 harp as the Cmajor harp, NOT to think of the C6 D6 harp as the C major harp. This makes more sense from a "theoretical" perspective, as the home scale is C major on the F6 harp, but I also think an ancillary benefit is that it means that your draw chord is a G chord: the same as it would be on a C major diatonic, making it a much easier transition conceptually for 10 hole players. I'm really curious as to what your thoughts are on this Brendan? If you retune an A chromatic so that it has an A6 and a B6 chord, in your head is the draw chord a D chord transposing down a minor third, or a G chord transposing up a major third?
@BrendanPowerMusic
@BrendanPowerMusic 6 лет назад
If we're talking about the harmonica in the video, you can still think of it as a C harp if you wish, with the blow C on hole 2/6/10. However to play a C scale you need one draw bend or slide push, for the F note. With the slide out, the natural scale is now G - that's how I think of it. Watch this video to get an idea of how all the 12 scales lay out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XDsP4k8-N8g.html You can conceptualise any harmonica however you want, it's subjective, but if you're using the criterion of no-slide use for the home scale, then in this case it is in G.

@@BrendanPowerMusic I've got a related question, and if you have the time to answer then I'd really appreciate it! It's a follow up on this answer (which I suppose I've had a year to digest and mull over) When you play harp in B flat for example (could be a standard richter tuned diatonic in cross harp for example, but it doesn't matter), do you: a) think of the harp as a B flat harp, and think of what you're playing in the Key of F, e.g. F G Ab A b) just pretend it's a C harp, and imagine you're playing in G (as a transposing instrument), e.g. G A Bb B c) do neither of these, not think of letter names at all and just think of relative scale degrees, e.g. 1 2 b3 3 d) do something else completely. I know some harmonicas sort of "don't think, just feel" and go straight to the music without necessarily "visualising" the scales, but since you play so many (and create so many) alternate tunings, I assume you must be holding a note arrangement in your head somehow, and I wonder whether you do that relatively or absolutely... I hope this question makes sense to you!
@BrendanPowerMusic

@@Muzikman127 #c: the Number System is what I have used for a long time. Because it's about scale degrees, not keys or note names, it works regardless of which key harp you're playing. It's widely used in Asia, and they have a way to read music-by-numbers called Jianpu Notation.

I call this tuning IV6/V6 tuning, and it is great for half valving.
@Raj-ym4cu

For a moment I thought this is the perfect harmonica. It's very good no doubt, but I am guessing this requires re-learning. I am used to a conventional solo tuned chromatic. The base/mother pattern is B D B D B D D B (C major on my instrument). Most of the songs I play are on this pattern and a few on other patterns/scales. Am I wrong in thinking that I won't be able to just pick this up and play a tune immediately? I want a solo tuned chromatic that can also bend to whatever extent possible. If every note cannot be bent, so be it. Better than having to learn a new pattern - it takes a long time to get intuitive on a new pattern.

Hi Brendan, I noticed your power harp is in G... Will G work with most keys in your opinion? Mostly blues songs;) Thanks Robert
@BrendanPowerMusic
@BrendanPowerMusic 3 года назад
Yes... All keys are possible, it's just a matter of learning the scales. You can see the keys and how they lay out in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XDsP4k8-N8g.html

Thank you! Question: I’d like to order one of these, but I’m wondering your thoughts on this; I tend to play in the second position blues style most ( A harp for the key of E) what ‘home key’ do you recommend on this particular harmonica for the most natural playing knowing I play at least 75% of the time in this key? I appreciate all your hard work.

swan 1664 has plastic comb...does it mean that i can rinse it in the water? i am doing this with diatonic harmonica's that have plastic comb (hohner special 20 and tombo's lee oskar) but when i did it with tombo s-50 (slideless chromatic) it went completely out of tune and some of the holes stopped working on a draw, no sound at all...does it mean that chromatic harmonicas for some uncanny reason can't be rinsed in the water even if they have a plastic comb? yesterday evening i've rinsed swan 1664 in the water and for some minutes it sounded like horror movie, pretty much the same as this tombo s-50 that was completely destroyed by one and only one water rinse...however, by the morning the swan 1664 recovered...does it mean that i can continue rinsing swan 1664 in the water on a regular basis? is there anything that i could do to recover this slideless tombo s-50 chromatic harmonica that became useless trash after just one rinse in the water...i've no idea how could one rinse completely destroy the harmonica that has plastic comb...
@BrendanPowerMusic
@BrendanPowerMusic 5 лет назад
Besides the fact your request for information is irrelevant to this video... You seem ignorant of the fact that most chromatics contain small plastic valves, or windsavers. They are very delicate and can become clogged and stuck if you immerse the harmonica in water, so don't do it. The S50 has no valves, but it has small channels that could retain water, so don't do it with that one either. There is no need or benefit in immersing any harmonica in water, actually. Just play them...

Thank you for the reply, though even funnier is the fact that meanwhile I've noticed the little paper with instructions that came with Swan 1664 and it says "wash in warm water below 40 degrees celsius", I am not joking....but I am sure that you know better than them, so I'll do as you have advised me, I'll just play, and most certainly sing, there's no hit without a vocal.
