The powerful puma patrols the canyon in the Angeles National Forest on December 7, 2022.
(turn on the sound)
Believe it or not, this was most likely a message for the other male lion, who was in this very spot, five hours earlier, and then returned only twenty minutes after this. Twenty minutes! More to come later. Stay tuned.

To anyone thinking of camping in the wilderness, it honestly pays dividends to watch videos like this one. Whenever it's after dark and you and your squad are gathered around the fire and you hear some shit like this out in the trees, you get to be the gigachad who goes, "It's a mountain lion. Sounds like it's trying to communicate. We stay close to the campsite and keep this fire going, we'll be fine."

I thought about going outside in order to identify it but it scared me enough that I am glad I didn’t. I few years later my neighbor caught several pictures of a mountain lion on their trail cam. I also found out the cats have been spotted for several years in the area. I am really glad I didn’t go outside.

@Sims3ForeverDude Your 'scientific' semantics defy the obvious realities. The realities are that they are cats that are the physical size of adult humans. That makes them physically large cats. And even though they may be physically inferior to African lions, tigers and most jaguars, they are still physically larger than leopards - the smallest of the pantheras. If a puma had you pinned to the ground with your neck in his jaws, would you still be thinking that this is a 'lesser cat' at that moment?

Their vocalizations can be quite intense, and it's incredible how they use them to communicate in the wild. There had been no hunting for 70+ years. We were in the territory of a young, active female puma, who was a frequent visitor in the night, as well as at dusk and dawn. Her footprints would usually overlay my own , on my daily hikes through her home range. Changes your perspective.

three weeks ago i was in the backyard with my dog. I watched this video the week prior suddenly i heard a sound at my fence. It was 8pm or so, dark. "Oh look Maggie, time to go in the house." I have about 40 game cams up and I've seen her and her two cubs 4 times over 3 nights. A creek runs through our ranch up here so the critters do to.

Heard this whilst hiking with my adolescent child in the forest. Absolutely amazing and yet terrifying at the same time. Was around dusk time. Got 2 photos. We felt ALIVE yet safe. One of the most beautiful sounds one can safely hear. Keyword safely. Hike responsibly. Back away. Make loud noises. Have big hiking sticks. Ooen jacket. Make yourself loon big. They usually are more scared of us. They just big kitties

I used to hear this sound in my woods in Indiana. I always imagined it was a cat of some kind but just figured it was a bobcat. I'm still not sure. The woods around here a thick and people are few so a big cat could live here undetected pretty easily

I heard this at Brown County State Park in April 1977. I didn't know what it was. To tell you the truth I thought it was a bird. This was just at dawn by the earthen dam at that lake way back inside the park.

@@mirrorblue100 I know a guy who was walking a trail in Brown County Park with his German shepherd about ten years ago and a timber rattlesnake bit his dog in the face. I wouldn't have thought those snakes lived in Indiana but apparently they do. I suppose the same thing could be said of big predatory cats. There's plenty of wooded areas for a nocturnal animal to go undetected

I WAS hiking and off in the thick brush about 50 yards away I heard this. It wasn't as loud as this mountain lion is sounding, but I immediately knew what it was. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up. I fortunately was right next to my car, and I quickly got inside, with windows just cracked. I didn't hear it again.

As deadly as they are, to me they resemble domestic cats more so than the other bigger cats do.
@fawnn1644
@fawnn1644 Год назад
That's because domestic cats, pumas, and most are both from the subfamily Felinae (sometimes referred to as the "small cat"). The "Big Cats" are from the subfamily Pantherinae.
@the_man_with_the_silver_eyes
Pumas/cougars/panthers/mountain lions are giant cats, just not part of the family officially called “big cats”. Therefore they’re closer to lynxes and bobcats than they are to tigers and jaguars.

I remember the first time I heard a Mtn lion scream while we were out deer/hog hunting in California. I legit thought it was a lady screaming until my dad said, no, that’s a Mtn lion. I lived in California for most of my growing up years and hunted my whole life, and had never seen one. But hearing it and not seeing it was literally bone chilling. Then a few years ago, my family was out hunting and a Mtn lion was stalking a guy walking down a valley to flush out any possible deer. Luckily his hunting partners were watching him as he was coming down the Mtn, and noticed he was being being stalked, and only about 30 yards above him. His friends, although sketchy, shot in his direction to kill it before it was able to get him. I have always wanted to actually see one, just never in that sort of circumstance. Amazing creatures though.

All wild felines seem to be among the most elusive of creatures. I have spent most of my 66 years in the rural areas of Western Massachusetts. Over the years have seen many black bear, deer, moose and many other smaller forms of wildlife. But even though the bobcat population is considered to be relatively large in pretty much every state, i have only seen one in the wild. I would wager that both you and i have been seen hundreds of times by wild cats over the years of spending time in the woods.

@@tonyprice2256 I’ve seen quite a few wild bobcats. Very cool animals as well. Actually was out shooting squirrels with my daughter, brother and dad, and a bobcat came out of the tree line and ran and snagged a squirrel that my brother had just shot off of a fence post about 30 yards from the cat, then immediately ran back into the trees. Was so crazy to witness. Super cool. I live on our family cattle ranch in Montana now, and our rancher neighbor about 3 miles away has seen a few mountain lions on his property. So they’re definitely around here. I still want to see one, but also don’t want to risk our cattle either. Kind of a catch 22. Haha

I think that’s what’s going on in this particular clip. A few weeks earlier, this same male lion, was in front of this camera, caterwauling, while trying to reach out to a nearby female lion. This time though, I think this was more about being territorial, considering there was a different male lion here, only 20 minutes after this.

Had one of these noises right outside of my house in the Ozarks in Northern Arkansas. Almost a week straight every night. Literally on my porch. My cats were staring out the window hissing every night. I had to bring up a few of these videos as I was laying in bed to make sure that's what it was . They say we don't have any but there's been a few hit by cars around here. Obviously they are growing in population.
