CLARK, CAESAR A. W. (b. December 13, 1914 - July 27, 2008), nationally known Baptist preacher, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He earned the B.A. degree in 1946 from Bishop College in Dallas, Texas, and later received many honorary degrees. After pastoring a number of churches in Louisiana and Tennessee, in 1950 he became the pastor of Good Street Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, where he remained until his death. He was married and had one son.
Two parts of his career in particular vaulted him into national prominence. For many years, dating from the 1950s, he was editor of the National Baptist Voice, a very influential position. He also received acclaim as a brilliant orator. At least six times he was selected as Eminent Guest Speaker at the National Baptist Convention of America, although his own affiliation is with the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc., for which he had long been a member of the board of directors. He preached as evangelist all over the country and lectured at numerous colleges and universities. He preached in Liberia in 1972 and in 1980 represented his denomination as a preacher in the Soviet Union. In 1984, Ebony magazine named him one of America's fifteen best Black preachers. He recorded more than twenty albums of sermons. Clark was also a pioneer in the holistic ministry of his church. In 1964, feeling that something needed to be done for the housing needs of Blacks in Dallas. he led the church to purchase the Good Haven Apartments. With the help of government funds the complex was renovated to include central air conditioning for 332 apartments. This partnership with federal funds later became an accepted trend in the ministries of other Black Baptist churches. Single for many years, Clark married Carolyn Elaine Bunche on April 16, 1987. He was a trustee of Bishop College and an important fundraiser for its work. He was also president of the Baptist Missionary and Education Convention of Texas.
