The Powerpuff Girls' Banned Musical Finale? - A History & Review

"Townsville's goin' down! I'm gonna throw this paper ON THE GROUND!" Yeah, I had seen this on YTV all the time and even then it had me so bloody confused. What a trip...

I know one theory is that the freedom beef song is anti-communist, and if that's true, then the song is even more bizarre.

I really don't think the plot of the episode is really that difficult to comprehend. The girls lose their fight with the bad guys and start to lose hope. The gnome comes in and offers them a way to rid the world of evil in exchange for what makes them unique, their powers. The girls agree to the deal and surrender their powers and the gnome rids the world of evil, creating a seemingly perfect paradise. However, he takes advantage of this peace as an opportunity to take over the city. He uses his good deed to manipulate the people into doing his bidding and, as the professor explains, drives them to surrender all of their individuality and uniqueness. Despite living their lives for peace and love, the townsfolk aren't really doing anything with their lives. They are all just acting as one hive mind rather than a society of individuals, and the one responsible for it all is the gnome. The "evil" that breaks the deal is the gnome's choice to manipulate the townsfolk. The idea of the whole Daoism thing is that a perfect utopia of peace and happiness cannot exist because, in a world where everyone is getting together, someone will always take advantage of the rest and rise above. The world can only exist as a constant struggle between good and evil. The only thing in the episode that I don't get is that whole "why can't we all get along" bit in the end. It really is an odd way to end the story after everything the episode had set up. Perhaps the intended meaning was that the good and bad should just accept that the other side exists because they'll never go away, but it really feels like the episode could have been ended in a cleaner way. I think a lot of the story could have been more clearly explained had the episode been a bit longer, but with corners cut here and there to fit the 20-minute episode, I think the message is kept pretty well in-tact.

It’s interesting how the banned episodes of Dexter and Cow & Chicken are only available in poor quality, whereas this PPG episode can easily be found on DVD and streaming.

The people gave up their liberty for their security, they lined themselves up like cattle ready for slaughter. And offered up their free will and choice , or representation there of, for the sake of their safety from the scores of villians... But honestly, the main takeaways from the song we're that gnomey had taken away the economic structure, and the girls were sitting there, goofing off, because they got taken in by his, Albiet catchy, song and dance... It kinda blew by really quickly in the last few verses of the song iirc.

Him: *is an often used representation of Satan, who has created some of the darkest episodes* Media: I see no issue here. Background Guy: *looks similar to Jesus Christ* Media: What is this blasphemy?!

I always thought this was a personal fever dream, powerpuff girls used to air in short marathons where I lived and I passed out at some point between one of them then waking up to this episode... it was such a trippy experience... my 13 year old head couldn’t explain what he had seen so I assumed I just dreamt it.

Haven't watched the show in a long time but I remember this episode, it was one of my favorites :D

This really shoulda been a two part episode. It's just too rushed. Also, I love how they just casually confirm that elder gods are real in the PPG universe 😂

I vaguely remember the episode airing on boomerang.

The episode is about false peace, occultism, and the AntiChrist. The Gnome represents the AntiChrist, who brings false hope and love.

WOW! i recently was recommended to check this out and my goodness. the girls seeking their souls, the yin yang, good bad duality symbolism. the spell that the gnome chants with the demons out of the blue while singing. the savior symbolism. and how about them flashing lights. i’ve never seen anything on tv that has been that chaotic. i can only imagine all the kids who watched this lol my goodness

This episode, to a degree, was entertaining. But there were many elements that I felt were difficult to swallow. While I DO agree with the professor when he said one should never become like a blind cow ready for the slaughter, all for the sake of peace. Not to mention that I also agree with the Girls referencing the Yin and Yang. It still doesn't mean that peace isn't something we should strive to achieve. All it takes is for people to stop being adamant about the differences you have with others and celebrate what you have in common. As Homer Simpson once said; "Some of us don't eat pork, some of us don't eat shellfish...but ALL of us love chicken"

I remember watching this on DVD and loving it. I had the whole PPG series on DVD and used to watch my favorites on an old TV. Maybe if I watched it now I wouldn’t like it as much since I was a mindless consumer with baby brain back then but who knows? It always stood out to me because of how different it was even if I didn’t understand the message at the time.

Wow! Super cool to see a review on this. I recently rewatched all the Power Puff Girls episodes on Hulu and this episode definitely stuck out to me. I was so impressed by the gnomes range I had to look up the voice actor!

Never actually saw this episode, but I already am familiar with it because of all the other people in the cartoon community who have talked about it. It's clearly a communist vs democracy message.

I used to be a huge fan of the powerpuff girls, and this was one of my favorite episodes ever lmao. I loved the songs so much

I think this episode was also available on the DirectTV On-Demand service. I remember I was watching all of the episodes via this service because the PPG stopped airing, and my 6 year old mind went into full fight or flight mode with that opening synth, because I thought it was some kind of creepypasta glitched episode 😂

I liked how this video had some music that was featured on Toonami, in the past. I remember seeing this episode on the 10th anniversary DVD set. This definitely has to be one of the darkest episodes of the series.

This episode was perfect to be the finale. It felt so good with the songs, the new villain and of course the ending.

This is my absolute favorite Powerpuff Girls episode, it’s epic and the music blew me away, and if it was the series finale it would’ve been a great finale better than Spongebob’s Last Stand, I would love to see a stage adaptation cause it seems fit for it.

I watched this when I was a child. I didn't know it was supposed to be the finale (reprised episodes), and new ones, but it wasn't banned in my country (Brazil) and I really liked it

You know, despite it's structured weirdness, it's really awesome that they tried. I'd recommend it, as a drug trip with friends.

this episode was my literal childhood bro,, i watched it as a kid!! i really love this episode for nostalgia purposes...even if the music is sub-par

After watching it there is no mistake this is a retelling of genesis. Gnomey plays the role of God that everyone looks up to cause he has the answers. Even though the professor ate the apple this time the girls ruined everything by telling gnomey that the villains killing everyone and stealing things made the world special and now there is nothing but happiness. They are the villains in this episode. They brought back sin in a peaceful world.

The only way I can describe this episode is when you have a really extensive and story filled dream and you wake up and you're like, "wow, that was spectacular"

I really don't understand what was so hard for you to grasp about the episode? It is very cohesive, well connected, and easily interpreted. The girls gave up their powers to a impotent force that was not good or wholesome but, Maleficent and sinister in nature, that required servitude and worship for peace. Hence, the professor's song and the yin and yang symbology. In the end, never make deals with devils, even if it's for the; "Greater good." Some price tags, are WAY to got damn high.....

My guess is that the theme of this episode was ideology in general and how different world views contradict/contrast each other.

When I was little, I just watched this episode on Netflix without knowing it was cancelled from airing on the televisions.

Wait, this was BANNED?? I watch PPG on Hulu and stuff and this episode, despite how strange and confusing it is, is honestly a favourite of mine I watch back often.

This episode feels like one big giant molach worship. The Powerpuff girls in eyes wide shut......they even had the girls snuck up on the gnome while he was bathing.......

All this time this episode got banned for a background character looking like Jesus? I've seen this episode like once. Clone High has Jesus and no one blinks an eye because of how cleverly well design he was and his name changes to Jes'us Cristo, but that series got canned forever from Ghandi's portrayal. I was first going to watch Mission Hill next after I was done with The Critic, but now you brought it up and that movie poster from Spider-verse, I'll start watching Clone High next.

Why does the plot have to make sense? It does in a way although it has gaps In it. I think since it is weird and random it is great!

I had all of the episodes on DVD and this had to be my favorite one, I viveldy remember watching it in the hospital while I waited to get taken back for a procedure. I don't think my parents liked it, so I didn't watch it that often. The fact that it was banned because some guy looked like Jesus is a bit- wow- it seems so silly
