good video, I'm sending this note to several fishing RU-vid channels for your consideration. I'm a knot guy. I'm old but still learning. I just ordered a bobbin for a PR knot and was watching your videos regarding knot strength. I've never seen any videos that cover knot strength mention one of the most important factors when fighting fish, and it plays in the selection of a knot to use. That factor is reel drag. I fish in-shore almost exclusively anymore. Lighter lines and leaders, many sources of abrasion, fish with razor-sharp gill covers and teeth, etc., all have to be dealt with. The spinning reels I use are usually in the 2000-4000 weight range. From hands-on tests, I found that my reels' drags top out at about 15 pounds and sometimes less, no matter what the manufacturers say. Deep sea reels I've used, top that, of course. I watch many tests of knot strength and wonder why fishermen get excited when knot strength far exceeds the maximum drag their reels can hold. Don't get me wrong, I like a strong knot, however, time to tie those fancy knots is not worth the frustration from sweaty hands, pitching boats, missing fish action, etc. just to tie the latest and greatest. I ordered the PR bobbin because it seems pretty much idiot proof and fast enough to justify its use. I also like the size of the knot for going through the line guides a few hundred times a day from casting lures. Maybe in the future acknowledge the entire system that holds the fish, i.e.; reel drag to line to knot to leader to terminal knot. They all play a role.

Just my input from experence... Note that getting strong mono/flouro braid knots is inherently hard...while getting a good knot at 90%+ on your jig, lure, hook with mono/flouro is usually pretty easy and many simple knots do that. Also note many people use for example 30 lb braid and 40-60lb leader, so the line to leader is what usually breaks...not the 60% knot tied to a jig with 50-60 lb line...its that 60% knot you tied 30 braid to the leader that snaps almost every time. Its a great knot for trolling or vertical / slow pitch jigging offshore in saltwater. For jigging you use the thinnest line possible and the rods have thin guides...I may be using 25 lbs drag on 35-39 lb braid so this knot is needed. With trolling often a lot of drag (30 lbs and up) is used...also if i use lighter line I have more line capacity (which is needed for trolling) so I do not need gigantic reels to have enough capacity. For inshore stuff and knots I tie on the water/boat I love the alberto knot, with doubled line....(GT on doubled line also good, but it a very fat knot) as long as you cinch this down with cinch sticks or gloves to a good 20 lbs pressure it tends to hold, but its a bit fatter and weaker than the PR. It also tends to break on single line for offshore stuff if your really pushing it on drag...but inshore single line alberto works fine unless going for huge fish right next to structure... On drag, sometimes your drag can stick...other times you want you put your finger on the back of the spool (spinning) or thumb down on the spool (conventional) to put some extra heat on. "I found that my reels' drags top out at about 15 pounds and sometimes less," Yeah for those size reals unless you go very high end ($300+) that is generally the case. With that said knots break at a percentage of line strength. Most knots, including some wiggle room for error (not being tied 100% right) are about 60% strength so if you were using 15lb braid that knot would blow up at 9lbs. if you are using 20 or 30 pound braid any knot over 50% is gonna probably hold even at max drag. Keep in mind though you can fit a lot more 10 or 15 lb line on the spool than 30 lb. "I like a strong knot, however, time to tie those fancy knots is not worth the frustration from sweaty hands, pitching boats, missing fish action, etc. " Yeah I hear ya, have to have some knot you can tie on a rocking boat at night. Defiantly don't wanna miss fish action, multiple rigged rods helps with that too. Summary light line + high drag needs very good line-leader knots. If using light-moderate drag and or heavier line than something like FG/Alberto , etc can be tied.

I fish for Salmon, Stripers, some Steelhead inshore also using 2000-4000 reels, 15lbs drag or less. I use a 15lb mono mainline or 30 lb braid to 15-20lb flourocarbon leaders for Salmon/Stripers. I've been looking up videos on knots too, I don't worry about the "number of pounds" just a fast and strong knot. I think the "strength knot test videos" are for just showing strongest possible knots to use "even if they surpass maximum drag" so up to YOU what you like and how much you want to bother tying...This PR knot with this dobbin tool and spinning it 70-80 times up and back with 5-6 half hitches is a good one but a LONG knot for what I would "want to use or need"...Braid to flouro/mono knots I seen and like..the FG, Alberto and Double Uni Knots. I also use the Palomer to a lure/swivle but found out my flouro gets weaken from getting brittle from the knot so I'm going to use the Double Pitzen Knot which is easy, fast, very strong and won't weaken the flouro near the knot. Here's a 2 minute video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UN9KNrzQE_g.html The Palomar knot itself is great and easy but better with mono and if I use it with braid I double the shoe knot part. The FG is great to use, good thin knot, best with mono but harder to tie, takes longer, more complicated and on a boat would be hard. Some videos show it done fast to tie but these guys are experts. I'll use the 'Improved Alberto Knot, it's thin also fast to tie, great strength and goes great with braid to mono AND flouro. It's kinda like this PR but done by hand with 10 loops up and back. The improved part is when you come back you do 3 passes with the tag end thru the original starting loop to finish it stronger instead of just once and then tighten it up. Here's a 4 minute video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--z0Zez0am6k.html

Good tips. Any tips on using an improvised bobbin. Say you are in the boat and forget that took at the dock or drop it into the briney.

Use a 1/2 oz weight tie the braid on and spin it round . Easier if you have long arms. :)

Tried the albrite , tried the fg, this one looks complicated also. I have some reties at night, rapala fishing for bass. When I need a quick simple knot I tie the double or single uni.

You make it look so easy mate. I always did it without a bobbin the hard way. Your method with the bobbin looks so easy even on a rockin’ boat in 10ft seas! Lol Just curious if you ever use the FG knot? My buddies did several tests with the same test flouro and braid and the FG knot won every time and broke at at higher load put on it and most of the time the braid broke instead of the knot. Just curious. Great vid! P.S-what model number is that from Shimano?

Love the FG. Smaller knot diameter than the PR. Also his using the bobbin wastes a lot of braid.

This is old school PR. It has been tested that doing the first wraps with space between them then wrap back with tight wraps over the top. And dont need 3 inches 1.5 to 2 inches is strong. . Nice video though and like the dental floss trick

hahahah "Ive wound about 200mm onto the bobbin" then after hes wrapped the knot pulls out about a meter and there's still heaps on the spool. You'd want to be getting your braid cheap :)

Can anyone please explain what the difference is in the quality of the knot between FG and PR ? Thanks in advance to the assistants
@TryABaconSlice
@TryABaconSlice 3 года назад
FG tied properly sacrifices ~15 - 20% of your line strength, a PR tied properly is something like 5% or less. Both are low profile and both cast well, IMO tie a PR at home or before you head out and tie FG's on the boat/shore

Not as strong. PR is stronger and FG is much easier to tie on the boat. A good FG is about 85%. A good PR is very close to 100%. Use the best knot for your application.

PR knot requires tool and is too complicated …. If you master FG you are in good shape …. How many times do you use drags above 30 lbs? Only really time is really huge fish such as GBFT etc… and other videos show a little benefit for PR but not practical knot and does it have much of a practical application
