as someone from the united states south and lived there for like 20+ years of my life, i sat here trying to figure out where the heck their accents were from. (edit) the Antebellum (which is what i think you were trying to say) is a romanticized idea of pre-civil war south, think southern plantation society which is what that party seemed it was portraying. and Confederate flags are sort of the same vein of people who use and carry them romanticize this idea of "the rebellious south" which is just another way of saying they're racist. It's not southern pride, you're using the symbol of a war that the south fought to keep slave labor. both their families posting trump and confederate flag support and them BEING in the photos and liking them etc kinda tells me that at best they're not disapproving and more likely they support it. Also DO NOT live in the outer banks if you don't fuck with tropical storms or hurricanes there's literally no where to go there if one hits you have to leave you will be under water lol.

Yes 100% as a black person from the south, I see confederate flags everywhere still and went to a historical southern college. It’s been in the past 4 YEARS that the students have started to rebel against Antebellum parties and confederate flags being in traditions for school. I do believe people can change but it’s hard when you are in the echo chambers of the south. It’s hard to cut off conservative family members but if you are wanting to be an influencer, you gotta take those things into consideration more than the average person I feel

Some people in the south defend the Confederate flag by saying it represented a time the South fought for "state rights."" However, that argument is quickly destroyed when you learn the South used the "states rights" to support expanding slavery into newly created states. So the argument was whether a state should have slavery or not. South said yes, it was their right to expand slavery and the North said no, we need to end slavery. Funny enough, I've seen more Confederate flags in the border states (the states between the deep south and the north) than I have in the deep South.
@mageofdoomsie1598

So I’m from TN and did pageants growning up. So I’ve known who Campbell is since college because she also competed in pageants even though she’s form IL. The pageant system is across the country but a small circle of people so you hear peoples names through the grape vine. But I started following her very early on in her influencing career. They’ve been married for a few years now and have always referred to each as pookie and Jett has always treated Campbell like that even when she had a small following. He’s always been on her instagram, it’s definitely more now because of them blowing up. She also had a marketing job and didn’t quit until she made the same salary influencing that she made at her job. And mind you Jett was still in a financially great spot and she didn’t need to work nor wait to quit her job. I am from TN and went to the University of Tennessee and was in a “white” sorority as a black woman. I was in college at the same time as Campbell 2009-2914 and I can say the atmosphere of a SEC school fraternity culture, the confederate flag is something that a lot of people unfortunately put up. I’m not saying it’s right. It always made me uncomfortable to walk into frats and someone had it up on their wall. I’m not making excuses because people need to educate themselves but in school they don’t even teach slavery properly so most of the time, especially college kids don’t even understand the connection. They think it’s southern pride. I know that sounds dumb but I can tell you I’ve had the conversation with these type of guys and they are clueless. And where she went Ole Miss is notorious for having the flag all over the place. I mean Mississippi still had the confederate flag as part of their state flag up until 2021. Now in other contexts, definitely don’t talk to anyone who’s flying one of those. And as for the antebellum dresses that from a fraternity event form the fraternity KA called Old South. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Dressing up as if you were attending and civil war era ball. UTs KA chapter stopped doing it I think a year or so before I graduated and other campus only stopped doing old south parties a few years ago. As for the Trump stuff, a lot of white people in the south live in a bubble and a lot of them want to stay ignorant. I moved to DC as soon as I could get out. What I’ve found from having conversations with people who support him, it’s either a lack of empathy because you don’t care or because you don’t know anything outside of your bubble. Again schools down there teach a very watered down version of actual history.
@nikkismith2858
@nikkismith2858 7 месяцев назад
Mississippi had it on their flag since 2021?! You seem pretty magnanimous & patient as a black person who lived in the south. The black slave trade was part of the U.K./ British national curriculum in the 90s meaning that all kids between 11-14 years were taught about it in history classes. It was taught calmly and there wasn’t any bullying towards black students as a consequence. I’m glad this was taught as the British basically colonised everyone and it wasn’t right. It’s obviously a lot more politicised / heated in the USA. Actually it was after the pulling down statues in the USA that led to statues in Bristol England to be removed for their pro slavery belief/enterprises.

@@nikkismith2858unfortunately it is extremely common. As someone who also grew up in TN, and went to the university of tennessee as well, you do have to see the full picture. Yes it’s wrong, yes it’s fucked up, no it’s not an excuse, but it’s also sad because of how much our education system fails our society and produces individuals that are oblivious to our history or apathetic. It’s not a product of a healthy society, and it most likely goes generations back for those two. It’s not charity, it’s human understanding of how we’ve gotten to this point. And none of that is an excuse for their behavior.

I went to college up north and our school’s KA chapter attempted an old south party in 2015…it didn’t fly with any of us & they were forced not to have it bc again, northern school, none of us in Greek life (both frats and srats) were going to put up with that racist BS. Apparently KA’s “spiritual leader” is Robert e Lee and they walked around wearing shirts with the guys face on it. What’s even more embarrassing is that president Biden was an alum of that same KA chapter so they didn’t get kicked off campus even after their “KAstle” was partially torched in an arson, and even after the dr*g fueled parties, SAs, and more. Those guys had a civil war cannon outside their frat house. Again, we don’t tolerate that up north, and I’d only ever seen a confederate flag on the internet. When I moved down south….I saw those awful flags EVERYWHERE and even as a white woman it made me severely uncomfortable. I can’t even imagine how you must feel seeing that as a woman of color. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with this & happy to hear you got to DC❤😢 Girl, I know people in town here (ATL) who personally know Campbell and Jett Wayne….trash human beings. She keeps poor Chelsea around for the rare photo opp to be her “token” black friend and Chelsea is a sweet girl, she deserves better than to be used by the puke-etts.

The confederate flag has become synonymous with people who still hold racist beliefs. No matter what anyone else may say, that is the impression people get when they see someone using that flag. Mississippi is not known for having very progressive views on anything. Ever. It's one of the states that is still well known to have sundown towns (not that those don't exist in othet states) which are towns that do not treat anyone non-white with anything other than disdain and or hostility, overt or covert.

up untill the 16-minute mark i was very confused, while i am from the south and i do LOVE the STYLE of the Antebellum dress and plantation-style homes i fully recognize what that means and would never support the ideals they once stood for. that being said the Confederate flag gives me the ick and that people still fly it as "Southern pride" is foolish its not something to be proud of. to recognize it and talk about what happened is valid and important, but having PRIDE in what happened is none of those things. you can be a proud Southerner and not romanticize such a horrible dark time in US history. we literally went to war over it and those ideals lost, i don't understand why you would want to stand proud under a flag that stands for slavery. And maybe if they were wearing historical recreation of those dresses it might feel different but those looked like party city costumes and felt mocking, it did not feel like they were wearing those dresses because they liked the style and look, wich in the historical Recreation community is the ONLY reason their worn.

The best way to think of these types of parties would be if Germany universities threw N*zi themed parties which romantisied about that time in history. Ignoring what actually happened. Difference is unlike America Germany removed all traces of what went on errected monuments to remember the victims not the purpitrators where as in America they errected statues celibrating what went on and a lot of those statues went up years after the war. Most went up during the time of the civil rights movment when people of colour were fighting for equality. It was a way to remind them of their place. Remember all the arguments that when around when statues of confederate soldiers were being removed as it not only glorified slave ownership but also a point in time when one part of the country tried to over throw the other.

I kind of have to give her the benefit of the doubt on the Antebellum parties. I think she was ignorant. Many schools, not just in the South, teach that the Civil War was about states' rights, not slavery. And they downplay or leave out a lot of information that makes our country "look bad." So to her, she was just going to a party that all her friends were going to. I am not saying those parties aren't problematic AF, but many American high school and college-aged kids really do not know any better. This ignorance can be even worse if they grew up in a middle class or wealthy area because many of those places are still basically segregated. I grew up in a conservative middle-class suburb in Ohio (not the South, but an isolated mostly white community) and was definitely ignorant until I educated myself.

Im not saying she was in the right to go to one of those parties, but i do think slavery is not at the forefront of your mind when attending an antebellum party. And lets be real, college students will do just about anything to get some alcohol, especially if its free. I have to give her the benefit of the doubt on that one. Its not cool she did that, but it's not unreasonable to think she really was ignorant to what she was doing

hiiiii viewer from the south here. My parents immigrated to the south from east europe so i kind of have an interesting perspective being raised here my whole life and gone to a college in the south! its crazy to say but A LOT of people who live here fall under two camps: totally cool with confederates/idealizing the confederacy or indifferent/completely ignorant to the actual history (usually due to the fact that the daughters of the confederacy lobbied our government to change our textbooks so most schools in the south get different text books than kids from the north!!!). theres ton of other people who dont care as much or just grew up knowing that confederacy/slavery/racism in general is bad! Unfortunately there’s so many conservatives in power here that it can make it difficult to speak up against authority figures and go against restrictive teaching policies. my take is that its bad. by 20 everyone should know. we live and grow up surrounded by the consequences of ending reconstruction and the legacy slavery has left behind. im sure both of them have had hundreds of chances to learn and change their views, but i highly doubt it if they havent made an extremely PUBLIC statement that clarifies their current status. But its also sad to see so many families that suffer and are damaged by the chronic problems in our education system (in addition to white privilege + apathy for others)

As a black American, rich white people regardless of their southern ties give me the ick. None of this really surprised me because everything about their dynamic is expected in the south. That’s the culture. That’s the lifestyle. Like many things, antebellum themed parties are a thing many people will deny they knew were wrong even though people in 2012 and earlier were asking for it to stop.

I had no idea who these people even were. I think one of their videos briefly crossed my fyp but I was like "nope. straight couple. bye." and immediately skipped it. I don't know if its because I'm older now or just have different interests, but investing my time in keeping up with the lives of people I genuinely do not know holds no interest for me. Like back when I was in high school I was ALWAYS up to date with what One Direction were doing but now, I only know what goes on if it happens to pop up on my tumblr dash or becomes huge news that spans multiple platforms. It's not that I don't care about them bc I genuinely still love all the boys. I'm just more focused and too busy working on whats going on in my own life to pay attention to someone else's.

American here 🙋🏻‍♀️ An antebellum party is ignorant and in very poor taste, period. Personally if I even heard that a someone I know was attending an antebellum party, I’d side eye them and seriously question their character. I’ve never heard of such a thing being from northeast US, maybe it is more common down south? IMO nothing about the antebellum period should be glorified as slavery is a shameful stain on American history

I feel like you never read my comments but just in case - here goes: I was born and raised in the south. I’m also a little nuerospicy… I don’t get why supporting Trump is a problem when supporting Biden is acceptable. Theyre both old. They’re both terrible for different reasons but in equal quantities. I think influencers should be non political but the Palestine people FREAK OUT (understandably imo) when people say nothing on the matter. Context also matters. I usually vote green but when Trump ran against Hillary in2016 I didn’t vote and bought a dog (she’s almost 8 now 😢) because they’re both so terrible but honestly I wanted Trump over Hillary. So if her posts are old, he wasn’t as scary back then. I don’t get why it’s an issue. Trump clearly gives more fucks about lower income areas than any democrat ever which is CRAZY and it’s also what most of the south is so… that’s my two cents.

American southerner here: (necessary background info- I did not GROW UP in the south but I did go to high school and college here) okay, so I would never ever defend slave owners for one thing. Need to say that. But honestly, I learned about the Antebellum period separate from slavery (which speaks to the education system in VOLUMES). I was told to join a community service group called “the belles” in which you just show up and look pretty and tell guests where to go all day IN ANTEBELLUM DRESSES (it’s required) because it would look good on my college applications and future resumes. Knowing nothing about the period, I did get rejected for not having southern heritage. I was mad I wasn’t allowed to support my community, but watching this video, I realize it was a blessing. I had no idea what went with this time period. I knew about the confederate flag and if someone handed me one and said “here, wear this, and do community service” I would have been like “oh HECK no” but this pretty dress essentially being the same thing and I had no idea and wanted to join. I didn’t officially learn why it was a problem until Lady Antebellum changed their name to Lady A. I couldn’t figure out why, as it was just a time period - like the Victorian period or something. I did some research and heard debates and I was like “oh. This is bad. And not even my problem to speak on to begin with.” So not being FROM the south, I don’t get too fired up when I see it (as I said, these dresses are still around and these parties do still happen - I remember in high school all my friends wanted to go to these parties at the college near us) but I also don’t support or condone it. I kinda just roll my eyes and move on. As for Pookie, I’m not sure when she went to ole Miss, but if it was 8 or so years ago, this was absolutely the normal culture and if she had the same sort of education I had, she would not have thought twice about it. Ignorance is not an excuse, but if you think about being invited to a 50s party or a hippie party, you probably wouldn’t do tons of research for that either. Just find a costume and buy some booze and show up. I believe it’s in the past for her and we need to focus on if she’s okay in her marriage now.

As someone from the southern US (Louisiana), I have never heard of antebellum themed parties. Am I surprised? No. Would I be appalled if I knew anyone who went to one? Yes. I went to college but my college never did, nor I think would it have allowed, a party like that. There is no excuse. Get drunk somewhere else if that is your prerogative. Also, it is usually safe to assume that rich people in the south (whether this couple is rich is debatable) are Trump stans, unfortunately. The people I was friends with in college also wouldn't have associated with someone who had a confederate flag on their wall, so the fact she was hanging out at someone's place who had that and posted a pic with it in her background says a lot about her.

Okay, so I am an American from Alabama, which is DEEP south! This is what I’ll say about political awareness in the American South. I grew up in a religious, largely white environment from private Christian school to church twice a week at least, constantly surrounded by right-leaning people whether I knew it or not. By all means, I was in the perfect position to drink the Confederate Koolaid, go to an SEC university, and participate in this kind of racist bs like plenty of people around me did. Somehow, I managed to dodge the religious, Republican indoctrination and choose a left-political-leaning when I finally became politically aware in my late teens. I wasn’t especially smart or politically active, but I still managed not to go to any Antebellum parties, pose in front of any Confederate flags, or post any racist nonsense on my social media, even as a teen. I don’t think that moral standards for Southern people should be lowered, because I’m a stupid dumb idiot, and I had somehow started to intuit by my teen years that certain tenants of “Southern culture” were racist and cringe and not completely innocent. Even ten years ago, even in your early-20s, if you’re participating in the Confederate cosplay and supporting the Trump administration with your whole chest, that’s a choice that you’d only make if the world outside of your white, probably religious, probably sexist, very traditionalist lifestyle didn’t matter very much to you, and that shows a lack of empathy at the very least (in my opinion, a person who was late teens/ early 20s and in Alabama in the 2010s.) And there are plenty of Alabaman people like me who are perfectly aware and rejecting of Confederate nonsense, mostly thanks to the activism from within black communities here in Alabama. Without the activism of black communities, I can’t imagine how much more screwed up we’d be down here. Anyways, in conclusion, f*ck Antebellum parties, f*ck the Confederate flag, and f*ck white Southern political ignorance. We Southern whites-as poor as the quality of education down here is-should be held to standards as high as anybody else or we’re not going to get better. And believe you me, I’d love for this podunk hick state to be better eventually, somehow.

I live in Alabama and I consider myself to be pretty far left politically. That out of the way I find this situation a little dramatic. I think trying to cancel someone over some 12-year-old photos when they were in their early 20’s feels like a stretch especially since the photos don't show anything that crazy. Are rebel flags offensive? Yes. Am I gonna cancel someone who posed with one 12-flipping years ago? No, because that energy could be spent doing something productive instead of arguing about this surface-level crap. It's giving virtue signaling/surface-level activism. I also don't think people who have never lived in the south understand the level of normalization these things have down here and that it's extremely difficult to unlearn that normalization especially since every day is like living in a trump rally echo chamber.

Re the parties: you hit the nail on the head with people are just there to get drunk. And as someone well out of my 20s lemme tell you there is still plenty of "common sense" dumb when one is in college, esp with something like that kind of party which I would bet money were long running annual frat parties so they were considered normal and so you either just didn't question the theme or potentially if she was in a sorority she could have been shunned for skipping (and she was clearly on the trophy wife career path so being shunned from the sorority would be an absolute no go). So like yeah they are cringe photos but if it was just the questionably themed parties and she doesn't continue to go to events like that then it can be considered a very cringe past event. Much like how back in the 00s the r word and fat shaming and stalker paparazzi were considered fine and normal.

Just to summarize the degrees he has: in the US we have 13 years of “Grade School” (Kindergarten through 12th grade) the there’s 4 years of an “Undergraduate/Bachelors Degree” and then after you have a Bachelors Degree you are able to apply for and attend graduate school for a Masters degree such as an MBA which is usually 2-3 years long. ALSO after your undergraduate degree you can apply for Law School, which is typically 3-4 years. So this guy has at minimum of 9 years of University/Higher education, but probably more like 10-11. 😳 Impressive even if he sucks!

There are many variations of southern accent, his is unusually monotone, but in America, we typically view a southern accent as uneducated (source: I split my time between NY/New England & their town, Atlanta, GA). He has 2 post- graduate degrees (law, finance) but he works in sales liquidating dental practices (he claims to work in mergers & acquisitions, but NY guys who actually work M&A would laugh at him). She and her brother are both known to be a bit r*cist. She’s not southern; she’s from Illinois (the Midwest) but cosplays southern because she attended uni at “Ole Miss.” I know many people who cannot stand them. They claim to have money but their house is practically empty and both are driving around vehicles 20+ years old, as they at what we would call “house poor”-their house looks nice from the outside & they buy expensive clothes, but the house is empty & most everything they can’t afford or they finance. It’s actually quite sad they can’t be happy with what they do have and instead play a silly little game of pretend to appeal to a social media algorithm.

Personally if it was just the Trump support it would be more understandable and easier to follow her. For reference Trump had almost 50% of the popular vote/similar to the Brexit vote/situation. It’s almost impossible to not interact with 50% of the population. However, having grown up in rural PA I could tell where this was going when he made the offhand comment about renting the Uhaul in Philly and I wasn’t surprised by what followed. In my opinion if someone keeps telling/showing you who they are, you believe them and don’t continue supporting them if it doesn’t line up with your personal morals.

I'm American, specifically African-American from the south. The plantation parties are bad - and everyone knows it. The problem is before the past few decades, it was part of that "if you know you know" system in the south, where mostly rich, white people could openly celebrate antebellum (aka pre-emancipation) days. Now, with social media around to preserve the pictures, people who engage in that culture have to come to terms with the fact that the world can find out about it. I could write a whole essay on this, but I don't think it makes Pookie a bad person, I think she's a product of a problematic culture. I'd feel a lot better about her as a person though if she showed some sort of growth or understanding beyond "it was a dumb mistake." Also there's no way they're living that lifestyle comfortably unless there's family money in the mix. I'm also a lawyer with the almost the same degrees as Jett (different but comparable schools).
