Prepositions of place
Indicate a position, place or direction.
To: Marks a destination, place or position.
I'm going to Paris.
Next to : Indicates proximity to a reference point.
The bakery is next to the pharmacy.
In the middle of : Indicates a central position.
The statue is in the middle of the square.
At: Indicates a place linked to a person or entity.
We're going to Marie's for dinner tonight.
Against: Indicates physical contact or opposition.
She's leaning against the wall.
In: Indicates a position within a place or object.
The book is in the bag.
Behind: Indicates a position behind.
The cat is hiding behind the sofa.
In front: Marks a position at the front.
There's a car parked in front of the house.
Opposite : Indicates an opposite position in relation to a reference point.
The bank is opposite the post office.
Between: Indicates a position between two elements.
He's sitting between Mary and Paul.
Out of : Indicates a position or movement outside a space.
He went out of the house.
To: Indicates a geographical or temporal limit (also used for time).
We walk to the river.
Far from: Indicates a distance from a place.
He lives far from the city.
Under: Indicates a position below something.
The cat is under the table.
On: Indicates a position on the surface of something.
The book is on the table.
Towards: Indicates the approximate direction of a place or approach in time.
I'm heading for the exit.
Prepositions of time
Indicate a duration, moment or temporal sequence.
After : Indicates posteriority in time.
We'll go to the restaurant after the film.
Before : Indicates anteriority in time.
I arrived before you did.
During : Marks a duration during which an action takes place.
I stayed at home for two hours.
Until: Indicates a time limit (also used for place).
I'll stay here until 6 p.m.
To: Indicates an approximation of time.
I'll come around 6pm.
Prepositions of cause or consequence
Express a reason, cause or consequence.
Because of : Indicates a negative cause or reason for something.
He's late because of the rain.
For: Indicates a purpose or reason.
I work to earn money.
Despite: Indicates opposition to a negative circumstance.
He went out despite the rain.
Without: Indicates the absence or deprivation of something.
I left without my keys.
Exceptional or inclusive prepositions
Express inclusion or exclusion.
Among: Indicates inclusion in a group.
She feels alone among her friends.
Except: Indicates an exception to a rule or set.
Everyone came except him.
