In a farewell address to Parliament on December 9th, 1993, before MPs broke for the Christmas holiday, Oginga, the then Leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament, spoke as if he knew that his time had come. He said, “I want to leave you (MPs) with one thing: Please make this House responsible. I want our people on the other side (Kanu) to also make this House responsible. We all belong to Kenya and we should not abuse this country.” He died in 1994 at Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu. Oginga was a fearless leader. Unlike many politicians, Oginga Odinga would not compromise his ideals, irrespective of the consequences. He was in the first Cabinet at independence in 1963 as Minister for Home Affairs. In 1964, when Kenya became a republic and Kenyatta the President, he was appointed Vice-President and Minister for Home Affairs.
