Yes, after nearly a 7 year hiatus, The Price Is Right returned to Australian screens under the stewardship of Larry Emdur. The new version is being aired by the Seven Network and produced in Sydney with a new, "high-octane" format with flashy set. Be the judge and tell us what you think of this new version.

In this video, you'll see a promo for an episode of Packed to the Rafters (PTTR), which aired on the day after this version of TPIR debuted (May 8, 2012 to be exact). This one, in question, is entitled "The Things We Do for Love", and is narrated by Coby Jennings (his only narration episode), who is played by Ryan Corr.

When I first watched this show, 20 minutes of the second episode, I felt so flat. Largely because I still have fond memories of Larry Emdur hosting the show on Channel Nine which gave extravagance a new meaning. Who doesn't remember those Mega Showcases worth over half a million dollars?! (If you don't, it's on RU-vid.) This version just feels like a cheap appetiser to Deal or No Deal, and when the top prize on offer is one of the cheapest internationally, then you feel disappointed...

Brucetik1, take a bow! No truer words have been spoken on RU-vid. This show had a lot of potential and I was very excited when I heard last month that the Australian version of the show was being revived and furthermore, the one and only Larry was hosting it. But, any potential this show had is just going to be that: POTENTIAL....but falling well short of it. Not even Larry, with his talent and enthusiasm, is going to save the show whilst it remains in the format its in after 3 weeks.

Very reminiscent of the American Syndicated TPIR with Doug Davidson (94-95). And we know how long that lasted....

Channel 7 has always been rather frugal. They cancelled Gladiators in the 90s despite immense popularity, just because of riding expenses. And now, travel and accommodations are no longer being covered for contestants on The Chase!

This reminds me so much of the syndicated Doug Davidson version syndicated in the USA during the late 90s... like this one, contestants came up on stage without bidding.

After only seeing 3 episodes, I've already given up watching. May I express why Heavily scaled down format Bad announcer Bad camera work, it's like they have a camera shortage Don't like the fake 2-Story set Studio lighting too dark Would be better off being set inside a Big W store Cheap showcase budget. You know it's a cheap GS if the car (star prize) is a cheap little hatch. The previous incarnation had more expensive cars offered and the show itself had a more diverse range of prizes.

To quote Bob Barker, who appeared on the David Letterman show in the US shortly before his retirement from the price is right, “We get the prizes cheap because they’re stolen.” I believe that quote sums up the prizes on this version of the price is right. Come on Fremantle, you’re better than this…

I do like the music used for describing the items, it's not that bad, aside from everything else, the older Australian version that Channel 9 had is way better. "3:57-4:24, 11:44-12:12, 24:00-24:31"

TPIR was compulsory viewing during my primary school years back in the '90s. After coming home from school, would watch a couple of kids shows on the ABC followed by Sale of the Century at 5pm and TPIR at 5:30pm. When TPIR went off air, I was hooked on Who Wants to be a Millionaire during 1999-2002. When Millionaire became monotonous towards the end, this coincided with the revival of TPIR in 2003. I was excited to hear this, but didn't watch it much until the megashow case began in 2004

That's the way game shows started back in the 50s here in the United States. The famous shows of "What's My Line?" the original "The Price is Right" (before Bob Barker) and "To Tell the Truth", just to name a few, were always sponsored the way sporting events are, such as the Rose Bowl Game (college football) presented by Visio. Remington, Newport and Palmolive were a few of the sponsors that helped get game shows running. Now-a-days, they only advertise by supplying prizes, such as Kia and WOF

100% agree with your comment. I much preferred both incarnations of the Ch9 version (1993-98 and 2003-05). Prizes during the show were much better than the massive BigW wankfest cross-promotion that the 2012 version has become. Also, the showcase. To think that when the Ch9 version began back in 1993, the showcase was sometimes more than $40,000. $40,000 in 1993 is much bigger than $25,000 in 2012 (especially factoring in inflation).

Our economy was in the "boom" period during 2005-07 and yes, 2004 was a lot better than the current economy. I agree that a Nissan Micra is not something to get excited over: A no-frills car that will be worth only a few thousand in less than 5 yrs. With Deal or No Deal languishing behind Millionaire Hot Seat in the tv ratings, this would've been the ideal opportunity for Ch7 to have scrapped Deal, and made TPIR 1 hr and improved the quality of the whole show (e.g. prizes, atmosphere etc)

If there is ever a reboot of The Price Is Right in Australia, probably give away more cash and prizes like Alfa Romeos and trips to America, England, and Canada. Also, bring back contestant's row with item up for bids at the start of the show. Make it like the old show. The reason I say that is because I saw a report about the 2012 version on A Current Affair and it was nothing but a con by making a website supplied by Deals Direct which sells out of date products.
@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 12 лет назад
I don't think we will ever go back to that period circa 2004-05 when the mega showcase was $500,000+ (mostly attributed to the apartment in QLD and the Alfa Romeo sportscar). However, SURELY Ch7 can do much better than the $3-4k (excluding the car) that is on offer in the showcase. Considering that Deal or No Deal offers up to $200,000, for me, the showcase will need to be in the $50-200k range to get viewers and contestants interested. This can only happen the day Ch7 severs ties with Big W.
@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 12 лет назад
On the other hand, if I were an executive a Ch9 and Ch7 refused to change TPIR in the format that it's in, I'd be broadcasting re-runs of the OLD TPIR (especially circa 2004/05, during the mega showcase period) at 5pm, hence competing directly against TPIR on CH7. I'd be 99% confident and pissing myself laughing that the re-runs would outrate the new episodes on Ch7. You'd be sending the message "Now, THAT is how you run a gameshow"

@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 12 лет назад
correct! This is one thing Ch7 are extremely notorious for doing (moreso than Ch9 and 10): using shows as cross-promotion for other shows or companies. They did this with The Matty Johns show (ok, it wasn't 5 star viewing but the show went down hill when all the endless plugging of other shows and Ch7 personalities began). The new TPIR is just used a vehicle to plug Big W products.

Hopefully though, given a couple years time to settle in, I would want to see Channel Seven up the ante with bigger prizes, much like I would want to see Deal or No Deal have some kind of "jackpot" system put in place. It might not happen, but it would likely suck me back in as a serious game show fan. Finally, with the end of my rant, I just want to say: Rest in peace to a great man in Ian "Turps" Turpie. Such an incredible loss for Australian television. God bless you, Turps!

Ch7 as an embarrassment to Australian TV = understatement of the century. If you think the whole production of this show is bad, you only need to watch 2 minutes of one of their signature shows, Today Tonight. I will never know how that is one of the highest rating weeknight shows on Australian tv.

2004/05 I was in my last two years of high school (yr 11 and 12) and although I travelled over 50km one way to get to school, I always looked forward to coming home and in the limited time I had from when I got back home to when I started studying, TPIR was my favourite weekday show, superceding The Footy Show which I used to watch religiously in the '90s before it went down hill. It was a great one hour show in 2004, and although it cut back to 30 mins the following year, 2005>>>>2012.

Not sure if Larry was right when he said the world's favorite pricing game is cliffhangers. We US TPIR fans prefer Plinko, which I believe was recently introduced in Australia. (don't quote me on that last part, lol)
@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 12 лет назад
Bringing back the contestant podium would be a great start; something that is absent in this and the Davidson version. Contestants had to EARN their way onto the show; instead of being given a saloon passage to the showcase. That way, you'd eliminate another situation i've noticed since its revival - 80-90% of contestants that have been picked so far have been women. If it was the other way around, could you imagine the uproar? The contestant podium would eliminate blatant sexism
@Brucetiki1
@Brucetiki1 12 лет назад
Correct, but instead of playing for up to $50 000, we play for up to $3000 in Big W (which is a discount department store) vouchers. Channel 7 have ruined our version of Plinko
@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 12 лет назад
Changes are going to have to be made if the show wants to survive by end of year. Also, the fact that it's devalued and is perceived as nothing other than the BIG W show and only an entree to the main course (i.e. Deal or No Deal) doesn't help and will ensure that TPIR won't be fulfilling the potential we all know it can anytime soon

True, but considering the show that Price is partnered with nowadays, I think the Showcases should be in the six-figure amount, but not as huge as the Mega Showcases from the mid-2000s. Preferably anywhere between $100,000 and $200,000.

I say we won't go back to the huge $500,000+ showcase mainly due to the state of the current Australian economy, which is perfectly understandable. However, even if I was offered to, I wouldn't be going onto the show just to compete for Big W vouchers. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER CH7!

The product placement is shocking, the prizes are terrible, the absence of the "buzzer" "ding ding ding" for wrong / right answers, the 4 start players and 2 extra players for contestants row, the rolling in of games (done in many takes at times) is tacky. The design and paintwork of the games (wtf is with the back yard cliffhangers game) does channel 9 own the old stock of games or what?

I remember those huge mega showcases alright! As much as I want them to go back to them, it is highly unlikely due to the current Australian economy (the economy back then was much better). I don't see Ch7 (or most stations in general) and sponsors wanting to splurge so much money these days. However, as I said, it's still absolutely no excuse for Ch7 to treat the contestants with utter disdain by offering el condo crapo prizes from Big W. Just take one look at the Price is Right online shop.

I like elements of the show..I love that set, even if it's smaller. Larry is awesome, Brodie is excited and pretty good, models are pretty....but what I don't like is the prizes-not that they're all big w, but that at times they're just so cheap. fix that, and I think it would be a pretty awesome show!

Let's see, where do I begin? The idea of calling contestants directly down to the stage came from the Davidson PIR, the prizes have been cheapened and have become a plug for Big W (much like the recent Mexican version). I think the 40 second clock for organizing the prizes is unnecessary. To be honest, I feel sorry for Larry Emdur.

Very good points you raise there, but I still think Channel 7 could at least up the ante. I say this because compared to the rest of the world, our economy is doing far better than they are. Maybe compared to 2004 our economy isn't so great (I believe that was during the "boom" years) but still, how could anyone get excited over a Nissan Micra? I mean, come on, a cheap-as-chips $16,000 car as a star prize? And please spare me the torture of looking at the Price is Right shop... I'd rather...
@Tubewings

I think it's an all-or-nothing affair for the Showcase, meaning that if you misplace even ONE item, you don't win anything.
@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 12 лет назад
So yes, Ch7 really need to lift their game, especially with your point about the car (since its the main/most expensive prize on the show). Pretty pisspoor stuff from Ch7. I don't expect them to be giving out $60k Alfa Romeos circa 2004/05. However, even the budget game show "Burgo's Catch Phrase" had a Volkswagen Golf, which although it's not V8 luxury, it still craps all over the Nissan Micra from a height.

II have already written a long diatribe regarding the prizes on the show, however excluding the prizes, there was just something lacking about it from the first time I watched this new series compared to Ch9's 2003-05 stint. The overall atmosphere is just dull, and I 100% agree about Brodie Young. He just....I dunno. I feel he's trying waaay too hard to connect with the audience and the contestants. Also, the chemistry between Larry and Cossie was much better and they worked well as a unit.

Funny how you hear John Deeks saying "This show is proudly brought to you by Big W" during the ad breaks. He's very good (pre-Shaun Cosgrove) and would do a MUCH better job than Brodie Young. Ch7 obviously picked someone like Brodie to appeal to the females (already made a point about 80% of the contestants being females ), but he simply doesn't have that connection/rapport with both the audience and Larry that Shaun Cosgrove used to have and he also tries way too hard to be impressive.

If feeding on advertising from Big W is the only way TPIR can survive, the show should just be cancelled - simple as that. At least, that way, you wouldn't be tarnishing the reputation and memories of the old show in the way that other shows such as "Hey Hey It's Saturday' have been damaged (shows that tried to comeback after a lengthy time in oblivion, only to have the past memories of the show damaged). I've noticed on other weblinks that more ppl are starting to see the big Big W wankathon.

The game props suck (and don't even have physical logos), the tiebreaker sucks, the prize values are laughable for 2012 (and especially since this airs before "Deal Or No Deal"), the main theme is just a single loop of the former "Come on Down" music, announcer pads out his call-downs, there's too much freaking promotion for Big W... Other than Emdur, this just...sucks. I hope it gets better, but I'm not really holding out hope.

Channel 7 have completely and utterly destroyed the fabric of the show. No contestants row, no big wheel, mockery made of the pricing games (like Plinko being relegated to $3000 in Big W vouchers), and cheap and nasty prizes predominantly from Big W. But it does have a bit of a train wreck effect - it's terrible, but difficult to stop watching.

I'm sorry, but I have to give this show a thumbs down. Not only did they out a lot of what made the show really fun, but the prizes are C-H-E-E-P, Cheap. Is it wrong to say that "Deal or No Deal" is the best game show Australia has to offer right now?

Larry, you've given away showcases with half a million dollar apartments and $100,000+ cold hard cash in the past. Why the fuck did you ever agree to hosting this "revamped" mess!?
