In our new series, “The Price You Pay,” we look at the rising cost of attending a public college, which has risen ten-fold since 1965. Tony Dokoupil reports on how amenities at some universities, aimed at attracting more students, are adding to the spiralling cost of higher education.

we are in the midst of another recession because of the corona virus epidemic so videos like this are probably just another trend of people going back to school and the news trying to capitalize on it.

Don't forget the obscene pay given to administrators and professors, with many exceeding Governors pay. It all started when student loans came into being and were promoted by the institutions. We see this clearly with the LSU president who just doesn't get it. She sounds like a used car sales person; a bad one at that.

The school president said the "Lazy River" supports the educational environment? I thought that was why you have good libraries, and competent professors. She needs to remember that educational facilities exist to educate not entertain.

Don't you just love how they make all of these unnecessary upgrades to a university, like adding a "Lazy River," but then never ask the students if they want to pay for it in their 30's and 40's?!?

Why? Guaranteed backed loans from the Government allowed Colleges to raised tuition knowing that people would still come. This is what happens when you let government into systems. Competition did not raise tuition, it would lower it.

I understand a university being nice and maybe having a gym and pool, but what colleges do today is crazy. It's not a resort! The pool should never ever be in better condition than the library and it should probably not be like a lazy river at a water park- there are water parks for that.

WE have to voice our displeasure! Many local schools do very little to prepare their students for college. Secondary education should expose the children to a variety of careers. This gentleman is 100% correct about the cost of an education. The average student leaves college having 40,000 dollars in debt. Vermont leads all states with an average tuition cost of $29,541 for in state students and $41,145 for out of state students. Private college expenses are 72% higher. The average college student will have close to 40,000 dollars in student loan debt. Meanwhile, the average FBS college football coach earns 2.89 million a year according to USA TODAY. College coaches salaries are led by Alabama's Lou Saban who earns 9 3 million dollars a year to coach football. College Presidents make more money than any elected or appointed public official including the governor of their state. The distinction for the highest paid president belongs to USC. His base pay is 1.467 million dollars. Each year the cost of their additional perks (like housing) increases. The USC president recieved 5.487 million in additional perks. I have no problem with the aforementioned professionals earning a decent wage but there should not be such a deep economic chasm between the students and these college employees.

my niece just got accepted into a 4 year university for special ed. she was raised by a single mother who makes barely above minimum wage. due to her high school grades, ACT score, and low income she got a tuition waiver for all 4 years of college. the dorm fee is an extra $9800 a year. she applied for additional financial aid and they are going to give her $10,000 a semester! I've never heard of anyone getting that much financial aid before, but if the numbers are right she will have a little over $40,000 left over by the time she graduates. I'm guessing the financial aid doesn't take into account the scholarships she gets towards tuition

People need to be less greedy. If rich folks are looking for a charitable cause, they can sponsor scholarships. If you want government to pay for free college, just remember that the government has only got so much money to begin with. Money doesn't grow on trees. It comes from taxpayers.

I’m sorry but these colleges are ridiculous.You’re going to college to get knowledge and degree . You don’t go their do you have an experience as tho you on vacation in a fancy resort. Yea a college needs gym and pool but it doesn’t need a unrealistic needs like a lazy river or spa. Those amenities are meant for resort or a luxury housing not for a college student who couldn’t afford those luxuries without being put in Financial death in order to get a job .

Because low income families get rewarded, meanwhile those who have worked their butts off to make better pay are stuck with the cost of full tuition.... The harder you work in the US, the more financially punished you are!!
