You my man are hands down the best reviewer of DJ gear in RU-vid!! Knowing you had to do this twice just shows your dedication to our community!! Much appreciated man!! As long as you put out videos I will watch!! Much love!!
Terry, WOW I don’t own a prime 4 and thought I would stop watching after a few minutes. I watched the entire video start to finish. This is one of the best reviews that I’ve ever seen. Amazing just amazing.
Double agreed!! Brilliant review Terry, just subscribed! I’ve jumped ship, and are awaiting 2x sc6000 & 1850 mixer (early April) I think Engine prime is the future and over time .....
This was one of the most thorough review of a controller/standalone unit I have ever saw. I am extremely impressed with how you covered this and how you were honest about the shortcomings. No HDMI is a real problem for any mobile DJ who does weddings or has to do video. I hope Denon listens to your review because unlike many others, you really covered the range of use cases for this and you have the guide on how the second generation Prime 4 can be even better.
I am aware that this is probably an older video, but I’ve been considering purchasing the Prime 4, and haven’t had the need to watch any product reviews of it until now. However, this is once again a very insightful review by my man Cleveland Terry! Thanx brother! Your attention to detail when you’re reviewing products actually provide in depth information, and I hope the companies that receive your feedback implement your ideas. Because they really make sense from our (DJs) prospective. Thanx again for taking to time to do these videos. Respectfully, D.J. P.hadin’ D.em Q.wik
The absolute best review of the Prime 4 out there and my first time ever watching one of your videos. Not only did you cover all expected topics but you explained your cons in the best detail and obviously from hands on experience. I don't own one yet but it looks like I may get the Prime Go first and possible the 4 later. Keep it up and I look forward to following you from now on. Peace.
_Thank you_ for this in-depth review. I've had my *Prime 4* for almost 2 years and you definitely taught me a few things about my *Prime 4 Stand Alone Unit* that I didn't know. Your video timelines at _12:35__, __13:12__, __13:26__, __14:04__, __20:06__, __20:17__, __24:14__, __27:04__, __28:20_ helped me enormously and were very easy for me to understand. Please let me know if you will make (or already have made) an updated review of the Prime 4 with its *Latest Software Update: v2.0.2 Prime 4*
Nice terry but i do remember your first reaction to this standalone. It wasn't the best reaction to the prime 4 but I'm glad you reviewed it and i have to say you did a dam good job one thing I'll say like the ppl said you gave a very in depth review and we need more of this from the guy doing the reviewing so thank you my brother.
Now works fully (inc screens) with VirtualDJ too. Denon have been messing Atomix around, delaying native support, but a bunch of us do have it running - and of course the Prime 4 screen is skinnable from VDJ, so can be customized. The default skin from Atomix is already an improvement on Denon's design as it displays artist in addition to title on each deck.
Like always another great review. I've been using the Prime4 since last summer. You are 100% correct- I haven't touched Serato or my DDJ-SZ2 since getting the Prime4. Good choice opting for the SD card. I installed an internal 1T SSD harddrive and it works super fast (no lag time) - but sometimes it's a pain to update - also the data corrupts pretty easy if you forget to click the eject button.
I’ve been waiting for this review from you! Getting my popcorn ready...in for the long haul on this one. I was one of the first people to get this controller when it was first released. Personally I love it. Watching now...
LOVE this review. I’m so often annoyed by many RU-vidrs as the review slowly turns into a long video showcasing themselves, their non-related extracurricular hobbies, or when it takes 5 minutes to get to the actual point. Yours is truly the anomaly and I really enjoyed your personality coming through, but not at the loss of content and expertise. Such a great job with this, and I really appreciate the time you’ve put into this. I’ll definitely subscribe so I don’t miss any of your future posts! I’m also a mobile/on air DJ and a true lover of all things Denon, since the very start! Always a quality product. Peace and love, my friend.
I’ve been watching prime 4 and 2 vids for over a year. This is the only one that really gave me what I wanted to know and I’m finally gonna pull the trigger and order the prime 4 tomorrow.
I've messed with the Prime 4 at Guitar Center a few times and I've liked the feel and concept. Your review has cemented me getting either the Prime 4 or the Prime 2. It's definitely a great piece of hardware as it is. Your review showed me the things that I can't really see on a demo unit.
Thanks man! I really enjoyed this vid. I bought this around Xmas but life intervened and I haven’t been able to set up . I am really looking forward to using this device! Keep up the great work.
Hi Cleveland and many thanx for all your vids been watching you for quiet sometime now I am Dj IB in West Africa and among all. The many features of the denon prime there is one particular one that is at leat to me as a mobile dj is the mono stereo switch.. OK all ya mobile djs listen.. Don't ever play in stereo. Never ever.. Been using denon Mc 6000 and love it still using it and playing stereo in event where you will have all kind of creazzy situation for speaker placement your best bet is to play mono so that you will get even sound all. Across otherwise the guy on the left side will not ear the percussions that the folk on the right is earing so that being said like you point out even if you are using a system that doesn't have that option do it in the software please do a fovour for your audience. Big up from Niger republic
Really good video Brotha!!! I picked this unit up about a month ago traded in my old SZ and I’m very happy with it, everything you touched on was fair and relatable, very informative and I think it will help people who are trying to decide if this unit is right for them. Keep up the good work!
Great review as always. I am a Virtual DJ user who has recently crossed over to the Engine Prime universe due to my purchase of the Denon Prime 2. Initially I preferred using VDJ with the Prime 2. VDJ felt like it integrated BETTER with the unit. Plus VDJ gave me sample pads. I could close the laptop and still use VDJ! But using VDJ defeated the purpose of purchasing a standalone unit. So I decided to dedicate time to get a better understanding of Engines workflow. So glad that I did. Because I’ve grown to love Engine Prime. I think Serato DJs/Rekordbox DJs will have an easier transition to Engine Prime than VDJ DJs.
Great review!!! I was a musical performer currently switching to become a Ballroom Dancing Mobile DJ... convinced to buy Denon DJ Prime 4 as my primary DJ controller. I also bought Denon DJ Prime 2 as my secondary DJ controller. This is the best of the many videos I watched that made me purchase Denon Prime DJ controllers few months ago. And with the new Engine Prime OS/firmware update version 1.6 my Denon DJ Prime 4 & Prime 2 controllers works great!!!
I'm a producer that's getting into dj now. Love ur reviews man, on point, direct, informative. So, love this unit, definitely my first purchase. I'm also in LOVE with the Opus Quad. So, no debate here, I'll take them both, flaws and all! Prime 1st, then Opus, and maybe..based on ur recommendation, Mixstream Pro Go as a backup and practice device. Stems? I know a little about that..can't wait to get back into this. (Records in the 80's) I had Technics..things have changed. lol. Rock on!
Hi Terry, I have been watching your reviews for a while now and must say you do a great job. I own this controller and love it so I was waiting for u to do an in-depth review. You did not disappoint thanks for taking the time to do it. I totally enjoyed the review and did learn a few things about the controller. Please continue doing what you do.
Not gonna lie, this was the first time in 31 years I have heard about using the different USB plugs in that type of port LOL! Ur goated for that one -- in my book at least.. 😅😆😄
I have this unit as of 3 weeks ago. Denon makes us actually do some work in order to put in a good show. I also have the SC5000’s. I’ve had Numark V7’s since they came out and they worked perfectly for years. Only reason I scooped up these Denon products is because I wanted to leave the laptop behind and really get back to basics.
Great working review brother. This is probably the most comprehensive review on the Denon Prime 4. The video provides a lot of insight from the point of view of a mobile DJ.
I have a pair of SC5000 and an Allen + Heath mixer. Getting those players last year helped me re-ignite my passion with deejaying, I absolutely love them!
@@ClevelandTerry awesome! Don't forget about us! I'm in the verge of buying it too. For some reason it's calling my name as well but need your educated advise haha
Best review yet, thank you I definitely need day mode on the screen, and I didn't think about the switch from internal to Serato. I will be holding off till these issues are dealt with
Had mine for a day now, like you I didn't read the manual.I'm really impressed with Tidal integration. There are tracks there I wouldn't consider buying , but now I have the option to explore beyond the genres I'm already comfortable with without getting spending anxiety (or tracks that my pool doesnt have). The amount of customization that can be done reminds me of old Traktor (EQ type, loop quantize settings, deck pad channel color customization ) I'm really impressed with the cueing system for the headphone section. I can either choose split cue or cue/master bleed. Usually it's either one or the other. The only gripe for me personally is not being able to forward or rewind scrub via a long press via beat jump. It seems to be a fixed value, so if I need to go back a couple bars I need to press it multiple times. The scrub via touch screen is useful, although I wish I didn't have to pause to scrub. I Installed one of my older SSDs on the backside and I don't miss my macbook at all.
If you swipe the song to left in library mode the song doesn´t get loaded to the left deck, instead he will ask you in which deck the song should be loaded. Great review and yes!!!!! WE NEED A DAMN CLOCK ON THIS THING! :) And one thing i miss the most: you can´t transfer music directly from a stick or sd card to your drive. Maybe it´s technically not possible for the unit, but if they can get this feature on, there is no need anymore for a computer. And it needs a clock...
I have one of these Terry, and I'm totally a Pioneer to Denon Convert now. I did the same thing with the skipping-calibration, lol... Once you fine-tune it though, it's unparalleled. The Audio out SMOKES the competition doesn't it? I've owned NuMark, Native Instruments, Pioneer, and Stanton digital kits over the years. I was floored by this thing once I got it set up. :) *(Side-Note - I tossed in a 7200rpm 2.5" SATA drive in the bay, 1TB in size, and it was WELL worth it!!!)
I've been rocking the iPad version of Traktor with the Z1 controller for extreme portability (including mixing from the handlebars during a bike parade) so i'm looking at the Prime Go, but this review makes me want to settle down with the Prime 4 because it's also a mixer for turntables.
There's an old documentary where after a DJ set Carl Cox says something along the lines of, "if you're not sweating you're not really DJing" and pours a ridiculous amount of sweat out of his headphones. I felt that for you after seeing you under the blanket in the sun trying to look at your screen lol. Regardless, great and most entertaining review =)
Hey Terry, awesome work explaining this new unit! I thoroughly enjoyed the review and video, as I'm actually considering buying this DJ setup. I've used DENON since the DN-S1000s and the SC3900s and this unit appears to be finally Serato compatible, which has been a dream for me. I totally agree with the modifications needed and good looking out for me to know those gotcha's, specially as you stated, when djing an event. I'm subscribed to your channel and will catch up with you on the Gram. Thanks again for the best review I've seen yet!
Just bought this controller couple hours ago to replace my sc live 4 so luckily I won't have your issues of certain settings and features, but I still love these denon boards to death
Not being able to use prime 4 and serato at the same time is pretty much a deal breaker for me unfortunately. One of the main selling points for me would be able to do dj change overs and/or quick backup if laptop fails. The MCX8000 even allows this.
I agree dude you are the best. I love your reviews. Thanks a lot for what you do. I have been thinking of moving over to the prime 4 stand alone. I just seen that Virtual DJ can be used with Denon
Mr Cleveland , when at minutes 4 -20 , you've closed , and sayed i don't need my computer , this was like magic , coming from a big name DJ . IT felt like a game changer , something evolving , And DENON IS DOING IT .
Great Review Terry mate 👍 I think you are spot on about the effects near the crossfader, space is everything with a DJ, I think lot of DJ tech companies don’t get that part? I think by moving the screen up bit , it would create the space for the four effects buttons to move up bit as you say
Super video as always you covered all the bases. I won’t be getting one because I have the individual units and the x1800 mixer. Now I think HDMI would be nice but probably way down the road. If they work on a few things with the software that would be a plus Thanks for making this review.
Excellent video! I really like your honesty showing the good and the bad of this controller. It seems to be a nice investment and like you said "set it up, plug xlr and power on and ready to go!
Best Prime 4 review so far. Thank you. I played with one for a few minutes and felt like there was some sort of delay between my movement and the jogs. Maybe it was the settings? It was a huge turnoff for me. Help
Thanks for the very detailed review. I recently bought a Denon Prime GO and I agree with everything you suggested in an upgrade. I also would be happy to use mix emergency or other program on my laptop to to video mixing playing files directly on the prime systems. And I strongly agree with ALL Day enon prime series to offer Serato compatibility until the next iteration of the gear. The most important feature for the series is daytime mode which I need ASAP. Now definitely considering buying 6000M players! System is amazing....
I'm still in serious doubt if I should buy the Prime 4 or the XZ from pioneer. Searched a lot of reviews here on youtube and watched them all. But this review my friend, is the best. Saying things about the daylight, the jogwheels (which for me is very very important) and other small little things, no one else talked about. But you did. Thankyou
Yes! Great review. The Prime 4 has been on my want list for some time though was wondering since the new Prime 2 came out do I 'need' all of what the Prime 4 brings but the Zone, screen size and hard drive is a great option (to leave a laptop). Your under the cover B-roll in order to see the screen was spot on and hilarious and the bit stayed in for longer than expected which made it funnier too - often b-roll is very short but you keeping the bit in for longer added great comedy and realness to the issue. So yeah would be great if they bring a 'daylight' update for playing out doors. Thanks again for the amazing video and time put in by actually using it in the real world and discussing the ins and outs of your experience whether it was the controller or user error. Keep shakin' and rockin' on!
Bro, thank you for this here< i have been a long time Denon user so this is an added plus as I have been looking for a new controller to add to my collection. Roland was high on the list but this here is another kind of beast that I am liking
