You were lucky to see it on the big screen. I've been following this film since I was about 12. I just turned 60. The fact they finished it and put it out is pretty incredible.

Oh, this movie was mostly shot in 1994, not 1978 although some of the animation was done in the 70s. The project started in the 60s according to wikipedia, and the original animator died in 1999.

Yes animation was done in the 70's, 60's as well, none of that stuff is in the final film.

This is what I was wondering. Because the production, actors and clothing/hair style looked like something from the 80s or early 90s. It's clear that it's not a 1970s movies. Clearly Chris did not realise that. ah ha ha

I read about THE PRIMEVALS back in the late seventies when STAR WARS had given me the fever. CINEFANTASTIQUE did a cover story on it--the first article about a movie that hadn't even been finished yet. I haven't seen it but it gave me a lifelong interest in how movies are made. (I made stopmotion movies too.) It was fascinating to read about these movie professionals who were doing this movie because they LOVED doing it.

This is great news! I first learned about "The Primevals" from a Cinefantastique article (I'm that old, and I used to read Film Threat!) - I think it was in the Ray Harryhausen issue in 1999, which I think corresponded to David Allen's death. I'f heard on and off about it for a couple of years, and even asked a stop-motion animator if there was still any attempt to finish it. I'm really glad that it was completed and I look forward to the seeing it. The animation in the trailer looks great. Thanks for making a video about this.

The idea was conceived in the 70s by David Allen. Most of it was shot in the 90s. David passed away in the 90s and was unable to complete the stop-motion shots. David was a frequent collaborator of Charles Band who ran Empire Pictures and Full Moon. In recent years, Band hired stop-motion animators to complete the film.

Correction, the script started development in the late 1960s. A promo reel was made, but did not get much interest from the studios at the time. It wasn't until the mid-1970s that the current title was introduced. Funding never got off the ground until Charles Band took interest with his "Full Moon Entertainment" in 1994 for 10-12 weeks (not before "Indiana Jones"), where is was filmed mainly in Romania and the Dolomites mountain range of Northern Italy. Unfortunately, the project stalled and the creator, David Allen, passed away in 1999. It wasn't until 2018, through an Indiegogo campaign from Allen's partner Chris Endicott, that it was funded to completion. The beautifully done Harryhausen-style stop-motion animated creatures really make this a must see.

I was so young in the early-90’s, so it’s even harder to explain the overall “feel” of this footage. You always sensed that Full Moon Pictures wasn’t quite the same as “regular” movies, but it had this sheen to it that I can only best describe as endearing. It’s only in hindsight that they really fell off a cliff after 1995 or so, and I read it’s because of a collapse in a relationship- with Paramount: Quite a few films after that included tiny, slimy doll creatures playing with women’s exposed tiddys.
@flyingfox2005

The live action portion of the film was shot in 1994 - so "Rondo Montana" is clearly named in response to Indiana Jones, rather than predating him.

Wow, I can't believe it finally came out! I also did stopmotion when I was younger, though I started after graduating high school. I used to hang out on a stomotion message board, and we had a reverence for this movie and so badly wanted to see it get finished. I moved away from that, and had forgotten, but I'm glad I watch Film Threat (and that Chris is such a stomo nerd just like me) or I might never have heard it got finished. Lol Rando Montana (I know, it's Rondo)... 1978 was pretty late for a Lost World type movie to come out, or even for stopmotion to be used seriously for giant creatures. When Harryhausen released Clash of the Titans in I think 1980, it already felt out of time and old fashioned. The world had moved on from that kind of stuff, and as good as it was, it really felt anachronistic, sort of like classic rock music and airbrushed Frazetta paintings on the sides of vans. Well, and Frazetta-style fantasy art itself. They all ended right at the beginning of the 80s, like it was a big cutoff point. Then we started getting bodybuilders and models instead of actors in movies, and hair metal in place of classic rock. So glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s.

Some of the stop-motion used in the film is from the 70's and the aliens and sets were made as models back then, they never had the money to finish it, There was a short film test shot . The gimmick is the movie is finally finished years later. From the trailer it looks like all the live action was reshot but as a animator looking forward to this one.
