I just have to say that, (my impression of reading his works,) that it seems that Niccolo's style is to advise. Like one one hand he says that it is far safer to be feared, but also says that the greatest fortress for a Prince is the affection of the people. What do you think?
@MrKruchinski
@MrKruchinski 8 лет назад
He also says that there has to be a balance between the two things. A lider should be feared AND loved. In other words, liders should manipulate the people. Also it would be best to be feared by their ENEMIES (or other liders). But, in case one couldn't achieve that, than it would be best to be feared than loved.

You left out an important lesson... A prince, therefore, being compelled knowingly to adopt the beast, ought to choose the fox and the lion; because the lion cannot defend himself against snares and the fox cannot defend himself against wolves. In other words, don't rely on just one way of handling your problems. Outsmart and outmaneuver people who try and attack your reputation. Physically threaten or physically beat people who threaten you with violence. Deal with each problem according to its unique nature.

I'm a Machiavellian, and I think he's a hugely positive influence on one's way of thinking. I think you misunderstood him a little bit, which is extremely common with the excerpt "It's safer to be feared than loved," because that's is absolutely not a hard and fast rule, and instead it's more often than not a discouraged approach. He wouldn't recommend threatening your girlfriend because it's not necessary to do so, and that would actually make her hate you, which is entirely counterproductive. He says to use everything in moderation and try not to make people fear you if you can avoid it. He was not an ill-meaning person--he looked out for the happiness and safety and peace of mind of the majority. He is a realist, and I think fighting mediocrity is all about putting our ideals in perspective and thinking realistically.
@surelock5921
@surelock5921 9 лет назад
This. I think the point of the Prince was that it was a massive reality check to a problem which still prevails until today: Before understanding how something SHOULD be, we must first understand how it IS. People very often only see the former, all the while overlooking the latter. The very concept of ethics (the modern day term being political correctness) is that they were a set of standards , which if lived by, would perhaps bring a brighter future to societies who were greatly lacking in said morals. These ethics were brought about by philosophers who had understood that the very basis on which the human functions is through Evil and the despair of others, due to the circumstances of the societies they lived in. This is the main message which Machiavelli channels through the Prince. The problem amongst many politicans of the era is that they did not apply this knowledge, and oversimplified many of the ethics into general rules to adhere to, regardless of context. Machiavelli was not anything near as evil as people say he is; At most, he might be described as a cynical pragmatist, or even a manipulator. But there is nothing psychopathic at all about him, and if people studied his later book, "The Discourses on Livy," They'd find that if anything; he was a realist amongst many disillusioned kings and dukes, who grew up with little to no understanding of what was happening on the ground, instead preferring to focus on what SHOULD be happening on the ground, without any idea of what actually was. In its core essence, the Prince highlights a very common flaw amongst the study of the humanities, and to some extent, the modern education system: Before seeking to know HOW it works, we should seek to know Why.

Well it's actually feared and respected.
@AdamBreard
@AdamBreard 7 лет назад
Nabriales he makes the distinction that you should be feared but respected too. You shouldn't be hated. For if you are hated you will be taken down. If you are feared AND respected however no one will challenge you because the general public is scared of you. Because they don't want to feel your wrath they won't organize in a major way; even if a small offshoot aren't scared of you and they did organize they won't succeed because you are respected by the general public so they'll never gain enough traction to overthrow you.
@crimson6172
@crimson6172 7 лет назад
Adam Breard Then I think just being respected is enough. I don't think you can be both respected AND feared because fear attracts hatred. It is human nature to hate something that we fear. So if you are both feared and respected, one of these will become the dominant one overtime and the other will shrink.
@monkeydog8681
@monkeydog8681 7 лет назад

Just because we don't like an idea doesn't mean there isn't truth to it. That said I prefer to read Machiavelli in the same way I read a satire; meaning that he writes of extreme examples and absolute black and white maxims to show how the world is while subtlety exposing that we don't have to be that way. In other words here is the easy surefire cure to achieving your dreams of power but ultimately he leaves it to the reader to decide if he wants to take the easy route or forge a much more difficult path. For example most people only quote half of his maxim "better to be feared than loved" when in reality it is "better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both". Which leads me to believe there is a way to actually be both you will just have to work harder at it. Great summary and while I love your discussions of optimism and personal improvement I really enjoyed this summary and hope you do more like it.

I believe you have greatly misunderstood a great deal about this book and it's teachings. In the few points that you covered you took it to the extreme. While a lot of things Niccolo said are very dark they hard fast realities and it pushes the reader not to be a dreamer. It's main focus is a few simple facts. Do not leave yourself in a position for reprisal. Make the hard decision because it's better than none. Be firm but generous when you can do it without harming yourself. Seek advice from honest advisers but do not let them lead you. Make your own decision based on their council and act on it. The most misunderstood is the "It's better to be feared than loved" While that is true he also said it's best for both but if you can't be loved it is better to be feared because love is fickle and fear will keep them from reprising. But you also must not be hated. He is talking about respect and the knowledge that a move against you will result in ones own self destruction. There are many more lessons in the 90 pages of this book and all of them can leave a positive impact on your life. The whole book is about putting away the fantasy and dealing with the reality of authority and how to avoid the pitfalls of bad leaders.

+David Uezato That is very insightful. But it unfortunately matters not what Machiavelli intended his book for. Because much like Einstein and Tesla (and every other innovative individual to ever make a genuine contribution to society) their work gets used and abused. While the book may have been an excellent guide for the Prince, it is now a road map for every other asshole politician. People are too stupid to govern themselves. Which is incidentally also brought up in his book. Ugh... We should clone that man and make him president.

Do this, and she will love you, be loyal to you send treat you like a Prince. Do not do this and she will eventually leave you for someone who will. This is not how relationships should be, but it is how they are. Is that not what Machiavelli was trying to warn us about?

Pahahaha xD Jesus Christ You sound like a delusional incel who's never lived in the real world... A pseudo-pychological load of bullshit completely detached from reality... if you ever actually threatened someone like this they would instantly know you were a fragile, damaged nut-job. And I'm assuming that if she replied with the exact same rule to be applied to you then you would be fine with it would you? It would make you love her more would it? No, she'd just look like a precious, psycho man-child exactly the same as you... Imagine if relationships worked liked this, imagine how rediculiusly damaging and unhealthy it would be to constantly be walking on eggshells. You couldn't bond with a person who was like that.

I really had to watch this today. I have always tried to be nice to people my entire life. Always trying to be nice and fair to everyone cause that's what I been told to do by my family. Well, yes, it's truly beautiful in theory and in the movies but in reality it just doesnt work. What end up happening and it does happen to me now and then is, people will see you as weak and insecure and will take advantage of your niceness. I guess you dont need to turn into someone bad but you need to set the boundaries and when someone cross it you have to step up and confront them, dont be afraid of confrontations, if someone is clearly trying to put you down, it's your right to stick for yourself and make sure that people respects you. I say that cause I have been too nice to people in the past and avoiding confrontations so there would be no stress and ended up getting screwed and having people thinking negative things of me just because I couldnt stand up for myself and defend myself properly. All I usually was left with was painful regret for not sticking up for myself as I should.

"Il principe" is a very hard book to understand. To go into deep in it you need to really know the history of the time that Machiavelli is talking about and understand the environment in which the book was written. For me is a very "Italian" book and as an Italian I can really see a big part of our political culture in it. I've read it few times and every time I found different ways to interpret the content. Absolute masterpiece. By the way, great video!

I was also kind of surprised for you to talk about The Prince. In my opinion, it deviates from what I understand is the intention of the videos you upload to this channel - which is to Fight Mediocrity. If I understand correctly, The Prince discredits the will of people to change things (for the better or worse) because the reality is different. By that reasoning, if we have a mediocre world, there is no point of fighting mediocrity. Otherwise, I really like most of the other videos you post. Recently, I was capable of relating that to my supervisor job. When he said, "It's better to be feared than love", I thought this to be thought-provoking.

It is safer to be feared than to be loved line is obviously for politics and not relationships. 😓 giving the relationship example to explain why the concept is bad is stupid. The book is for a prince that is dealing with politics, masses of people.

Damon Tan that’s short sighted. Even romantic relationships are a struggle for power. in fact, it’s quite common.. it’s much safer to manipulate your partner into compliance rather than to allow vulnerable emotions to rise.

I enjoyed this very much. I don't agree with the last example though, violence isn't the only reason people experience fear. They can fear loss, seclusion, scarcity, inevitably and so on. Personally I would view being feared better than being loved, having a person fear your loss/absence is biologically stronger (standing by itself) than love. Returning home to someone who wants you close to them, rather then someone who expected you to be there ( and doesn't care if you don't, b/c people who love each other understand), is way better. Standing alone both fear and love suck. Love is a fire, fear is a pit, put them together properly and it withstands the winds of change.

But when it comes to Sanders, he is the most honest. But again, according to Machiavelli, that is not good trait for a Prince.

1 mistake: It was not Cesare Borgia who killed his own deputy after sending him to clean up the town of Romagna. It was Pope Alexander VI (Cesare's Father) who sent governor deputy _Remirro de Orco_ to clean up the town of Romagna because it was plagued by so much crime it rendered it difficult to rule so he authorized Remirro to use extreme force.

Well, he says that you are supposed to truly crush the enemy, but wouldn’t that just make the enemy want to rebel after that knowing that they don’t have anything else to loose? Because if they are frightened about you doing something worse, then it means that you haven’t crushed your enemy completely.

I think the best thing you can take from Machiavelli, the way to find some good in his writing, is not to follow what he says.... but always assume others do. If you meet someone in power, assume automatically that they are Machiavellian. You will hate people more often than you like them, but you will be hurt a lot less.

Those 5 ideas summarized to an even more basic form: 1) Studying what should be done before studying what is actually happening will get you nowhere. 2) Be good when needed, be a jerk when needed. 3) Hide your intentions 4) If you are to treat someone well do so, if you are to treat them like shit, destroy them. (Not always physically it could be in rhetorical debate, or in business) 5) Blame people below you for the crappy things you told them to do. This is kind of what I got out of it, it's all opinion. Go ahead and use constructive criticism on my summary of this summary, as it is bound to have some flaws.

he never said " Better be feared than loved". He discourages both extremes since if you're loved by being benevolent (by the people, not about your girlfriend) you will be seen as weak; but if you're feared, people will hate you. Both things will come to your downfall. The equilibrium on both things is "being Respected".

Earning fear as a supervisor would make sense (ethics is a separate question). If you can pull it off i'd say why not crush your enemies arguable they shouldn't have done that thing what made them your enemy (I don't know the details in anyones specific situation accept my own that's why I put arguable in).

In my opinion, this is one of your best videos so far. Something different. I think after a while, the positive psychology books can be very repetitive, or -it depends on the book- even boring. So it's good, and refreshing that you've added some harsh reality to your channel (I'm not saying that your other vids are bad, or boring, but I think you get my point ;) And lately as I watch your videos, I realised an intresting thing. When it comes to the books I've read before, most of the cases you emphasise totally different ideas than the ones that caught my attention. Sometimes you point to my blind spots, like reading it again from a different perspective, so thanks for that :)

The last point made"it is safer to be feared than to be loved" The analogy used of being in a relationship seems far-fetched (beheading). Also, the threat/condition of a breakup on grounds of cheating is a certain kind of fear except if the individual decides he/she is comfortable with cheating.
