This month we're talking about one of my favourite Animated features of all time, the sleeping titan that is The Prince of Egypt. Dreamwork's defiant call to the western world of animation that Disney isn't the only studio in town. Originally pitched as The Ten Commandments but animated, it took a dedicated team from the relatively new division in Dreamworks Animation to craft this masterpiece, and I'm not the only one who thinks it's a masterpiece, so does Kirsten Shiel.
Kirsten is a mega talented artist who's work I have been drooling over for years. She is an Art Director and Freelance Designer that has worked on shows for Sesame Street, Netflix, Disney, Nickelodeon, NBC Universal, and Apple TV as well as being an Award winning Illustrator. It was such a joy to sit down and discuss one of my favourite and her all time favourite animated work.

I agree, I find 'The Prince of Egypt' absolutely fantastic! It is noticeable that there was a lot of hard work put into every aspect of that film.

Great interview, I absolutely loved the Iron Giant and The Prince of Egypt. I have to agree about the situation with the art of books, I'm an industrial Designer and illustrator myself and there is nothing more exciting than seeing the development process were yoi can see into the mind of the designers, the path they take to developing characters, environments and products. Some of the most informative case studies in design.

I love that you mentioned the Art Books. I had a lecturer once call them coffee table books, because he didn’t think they had academic potential. Where as they’re a constant source of inspiration for creatives

@Any-mation funny because the traveling art book book store (Labrynth books was my introduction to art of books really.) Set up right outside the design department. We all drew inspiration from the books we saw, it was a peak into the unlimited potential of design. Before this I had no idea how that design disciplines were so similar.(At the time there were only 3 creative majors at my school; Industrial Design, Interior Design and 3D nimation.) Even my professors were excited to see the books and they were mostly older designers who worked in transportation and or product design their whole careers. This is 2 decades ago.

The prince of Egypt and the Iron Giant are two of my favourite movies and neither gets enough praise as far as I'm concerned.

Yes I think anyone in the industry respects them both so much but outside of our niche, they tend to be forgotten. The end of the 90s was an interesting time for hand drawn animation

I dont know if youve ever seen Testament: The Bible in Animation but that has a half hour animation of the story of Moses which focus on his relationship with the pharoah, it even has then riding chariots together too
