"The Princess and the Pea" is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a young woman who arrives at a king's castle, claiming to be a princess. To test her claim, the queen places a pea under twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. The next morning, the young woman complains of having slept poorly, claiming she was bruised by something hard in the bed. This sensitivity is taken as proof of her true royalty, and she marries the prince, affirming the idea that true princesses have a sensitivity that sets them apart.
