Leo McKern is absolutely superb in this series. Somehow he totally 'gets it', subtly conveying the sense that he understands that even though he's a warder he's also a prisoner too. The fact that he's one of the most charming and likeable No.2's just makes him all the more dangerous..

You may have recognized Number 6's superior from his appearances in Doctor Who and Blake's 7. Kevin Stoney played Mavic Chen and Tobias Vaughn. The Prisoner wisely doesn't publicize the shooting location of "The Village" until the final episode. It's the holiday town of Portmerion, which also featured in the location work for the Doctor Who story "The Masque of Mandragora". In the section of town that looked more classically Italian in design.

Don’t worry about the episode titles, Marie-Clare, they’re not spoilers, if anything they’re the most straightforward part of the series. Still love Ron Grainer’s theme.

Whovianologists will recognize No.6's supposedly London-based interrogator as Kevin Stoney - in an appearance sandwiched between his villainous roles as Dalek-collaborator Mavic Chen and Cybernetically-enhanced tycoon Tobias Vaughn. So I didn't trust him for a second when I first watched this!

Hi Marie-Claire! Can't remember if it's said in this episode but in most of them during the intro sequence when No.6 asks 'who are you? ' the reply is 'the new Number 2!'. So yes No.2 changes each episode.

I hadn’t thought about it before, but if a Villager were successful in popping a guardian bubble, he might release all of the bubble’s anesthetic in one gush, and that could be fatal.

10:04 best backsceeen projection ever. Virtually seamless. McGoohan went all out on production value and it's sublime. Wish it had a 4k remaster, that's how great this show is. I too thought he hadn't escaped. Kevin Stoney's office's life fixtures were too similar to the Village's... Also, to say about this show that you have seen nothing yet... that's an understatement, and is also why the show holds up so insanely well nearly six decades later. More treats to come in this series than in a candy shop!

Hi Marie-Clare. In terms of asking why No.6 doesn't just reveal why he resigned I think you're underestimating just how much of a stubborn mule he is! He won't budge, because to give in even slightly is (as he sees it) to give in entirely. This IS Patrick McGoohan we're talking about, a prickly/difficult individual who in his own life was quite prepared to kick against the world and potentially torpedo a more successful/glamorous career if it meant sticking to his own ideology/principles.
@Nosregni
@Nosregni 6 месяцев назад
Also, the prisoner doesn’t know which side runs the village. If it’s the Soviets, they could use the information as a bargaining chip or blackmail material against the West. But, yes, he is also very *very* stubborn.
@therealpbristow

[NODS] Also, bear in mind this is the Cold War era, when certain kinds of secrets became the most precious & dangerous things any government - or any of the people who work for it - can hold... or trade! Spies and counter-spies and double- and triple-agents, and all of that. If the reason he resigned is connected with something that a foreign government could exploit as a weakness - for example, some form of corruption within the particular department he was working for, or some fundamental flaw in the UK's defence strategy - it could be disastrous to reveal anything about it to the wrong people. Even if he doesn't want to work for his government any more, that doesn't mean he wants to bring them down, or let a foreign power take control of the country. And what he's finding in the Village is that it's damned hard to know who "the wrong people" are. People he thought he knew and could trust are showing up as part of this weird prison, and there's no way to tell if they're still the people he thought they were, but have lost trust in *him*, or if he can no longer trust them... But the longer he's in the Village, the less he wants anything to do with anyone who would willingly be a part of it, *even* if they're not technically "the enemy".

The titles are cryptic enough to not give anything away. Have fun watching this. You can see Patrick McGoohan looking more and more on edge as the show goes on. Some of the stories you hear about him...guy was a genius but a ticking time bomb!

And yes, the setting "The Prisoner" presents is the darkest of all - you don't know where you are, how you got there, or how to get out. Everyone around you is happy, cheerful, and pleasant, yet you know you can't trust _anyone_ -- not even those you _thought_ you could. You are a wolf in the fold, yet everyone is convincing you to become a sheep. Worst of all, the "sheep" lifestyle seems idyllic, making it a mental battle to resist falling into the trap.

There are hints in No.6's conversation with the Colonel about why he resigned, although it's not spelled out. It appears to be some kind of moral/ethical choice "..for a very long time now I ..." so to expect him to give up his principles in that way doesn't fit with his character. Why should he tell them anything? And who are THEY anyway? Rarely do tv programmes choose (or have the opportunity) to ask the audience to think for themselves, that's more common in the field of visual or conceptual art, which personally is exactly what I think this show is!
@alansmith1989

Writer Vincent Tilsley had the scene with No 6 and Nadia as more romantic, with kissing- but McGoohan just would not do it as he had strict rules against kissing female stars on camera (Off camera as well) He never - ever kissed the girl in `Danger Man` or in `The Prisoner` . It did make a change from other 1960s shows such as `The Saint` or `Man from Uncle` where that was common. American advisors came to the set (ATV had agreed to sell the series to the United States) and tried to persuade McGoohan to put `romance/Sex` into the series. He replied their ideas were great and they should go and make that kind of show, while he would carry on with the `Prisoner` as he sought fit!

First video of yours that I've seen and it's really fun watching this show along with someone who's as confused and amazed as I am. If I were you what I'd do is have someone who's seen the whole series weed out any comments with spoilers so you don't see them for you. There's always going be people who can't help give things away in the comments, shame. Looking forward to future reactions.

Personally I don't think the episode titles could be seen as spoilers. I first saw this episode on video paired with the intro and it left me with a false impression of what the show would always be like - in reality it becomes more varied than expected.

It took me quite a while for me to get into the series. It was in the mid-80s, and I was 15 at the time. The only reason I watched it at all was because it immediately followed PBS' airing of The Tripods, and there was basically nothing else on TV at 11 pm Friday nights on basic cable. My initial reaction was, "WTF?" but each time I watched it, I would get a little further until I could finally sit through a whole episode. After that, it wasn't long before I absolutely fell in love with the show!

Once again you need to listen more carefully or watch the show again. To tell them why he resigned is to give them information about his government's actions. As he said "For a long time I've felt" which is a clue that something troubled him about his job or his government's actions. Would he if he revealed his matter of conscience be giving a tool to be used against his country or put himself under their control. This is a show people have watched multiple times. We think about the issues raised and the actions that are taken. Your view of the program can change depending on what is going on in the world. Enjoy your trip through this world. Be seeing you.

2001 was released in early/mid 1968 and this series was aired in late 1967. McGoohan was able to convince the network to use higher quality film. He might have had enough pull to get effects in development?
