Thank you for watching my video on Alaska, my next video will be responding to your Hot Takes on geography. With that said, please share any other hot takes you may have (here) or through my email.
Love the videos. Alaska: high rates of STDs, Suicide, Rape. Depression, Alcohol addiction dosnt help we have lack of mental health resources and the isolated towns and villages make it hard to get people the help they need. more than half of all women will be sexually assaulted pairing up nicely with south Dakota. I have been victim to multiple lgbt hatecrimes here, which i had to just suck it up and deal with because its totally legal to do so to deny me work, living situations and DOXXing and harassment, except for a few cities: juneau, ketchikan, sitka and anchorage. most of my friends STRUGGLE with finding healthcare and help they need. health wise we are doing very bad. I have also survived a cult here. mother killed herself when i was a teen. I have traveled much of this state and worked in many of the national parks, resorts and alaska marine highway system. I dont feel like a accepting sense of community here and have lived 27 years feeling unsafe but I would rather drive through the blizzards than LA traffic.
I knew someone would make this comment. While this is technically true due to longitudes being defined w.r.t. UK and a small piece of Alaska has positive longitudes, directions are generally used relatively. For example, if I'm standing in Anchorage, I will say you have to go west to arrive at Russia -- not east. You could go around East and reach Russia, but that's not the shortest route. So Alaska is only west and north to the Contiguous US.
Lifelong Alaskan here, I'm as rightwing as they come but I'll be the first to tell you global warming is too real. Its affecting my state tremendously and while honestly I love the extra months of summer its causing chaos. We need bycatch limitations on our own businesses and to kick foreign fishers out of US waters! They're stripping the ocean of already struggling salmon, crab and halibut. The disintegrating roads/infrastructure due to permafrost loss are another problem. I hope someday to grow food to sell to my fellows to reduce our reliance on food shipped in from thousands of miles away.
Disappointing video. It claims multiple times that Alaska is a very important or even the most important state but never lays out its argument in detail. Why e.g. would be membership in the Arctic Council crucial? (I would say that Alaska was crucial during the Cold War with the Soviet-union, and that a Soviet Alaska would have been a major headache for the US and its strategic nuclear forces.) . . . Alaska seems to go the way of Maine, becoming a state with high average age. That is indeed concerning for the future of its economy. But I have to admit that I wouldn't either want to move to Alaska except for its south coast near a larger settlement like Anchorage or Juneau.
Those are certainly more important right now, with the nations biggest economic output and populations. However when you look forward Alaska gets more important with time, I don't think you can say that about NY or CA
I don't think so. California has a larger economy than many large countries. Alaska probably only has 1 US representative. Most important is overblown and a way to grab views.
The real truth Alaska is a problem even for a special need man never gets use to snowy weather is this is a living nightmare. I am better off in hurricane proof apartments in Miami or Orlando Florida.
0:40 “But while Alaska is technically located in the contiguous United States” 🤔 Who told you that man?! It’s LITERALLY the term CONTIGUOUS United States that tells you that is incorrect. It’s in North America, yes… but as we see it borders only Canada, so there’s nothing contiguous about it!
I should have used the word continental here. I have been working diligently to improve quality while also improving on quality control. I clearly still have a ways to go, but please be patient with me through this process.
It isn't currently the most important, but it's trending in the right direction. I will eventually make a video on why the Arctic Council is going to be so important.
Techincally you're correct but if you ask a Panamanian where are they from, what do you think they will say? The United States of America has a monopoly on the word. It may not be fair but it's true.
