The thing with this freaking franchise is.....that statement still didn't clarify anything. It could be interpreted in many equally valid ways at this point.
No, Aqua is Latin for Water as everyone knows. I used Google Translate to check how Germans would say "Subscribe to Just a Pancake." The result? "Abonnieren Sie Just a Pancake."
When i first saw you mention you were making a "serious analysis video on Aqua's character" I thought it was a joke but you actually had good reasoning and made a point. Please make more of these type of videos I love the memes but these are good too!
I mean once Ventus wakes up, he’s gonna be Aqua’s true friend and probably be a way better person. Aqua: “Ven, you were asleep for the past decade.” Ven: “I believe you.”
Man, I miss the old times. Talking with my friends about stars, sunsets, and police... Also, I didn't expect a so serious and true argument by the same pancake whose name spelled backwords is Just a Pancake, so I don't believe you, sorry.
You must have played a different game than, becuase KH3 completed her arc. Aqua's problem has always been trying to take too much on by herself. She's still fighting the darkness in the deepest place even without a keyblade after all. She literally was stripped of everything, and when Sora reaches his hand out, she takes it, knowing that even with nothing she was never alone.(her good friend actually being inside Sora and really being the one reaching out to her) they even took off the pressure of her being the only "master" during this crisis unlike before, and even showed that her time spent in the darkness still effects her(the scene with the huge swarm) and it wasn't just a one off thing that she overcame the second she was back in the light. There's wasn't much more you could expect from the character, like at all. Roxas and Xion turned out to be much worse characters overall, they had minimal pay off in 3 for their arcs.
Seeing her ready to fight again at the end of 0.2 established her as someone who doesnt give up. 3 kinda does away with this by having her not do anything. The scene where she gave up was also out of character. What she shouldve done is, as the strongest wielder there, gone up to attack it like riku did. Seeing her get overpowered by the tornado would instill the sense of hopelessness that the scene was trying to present.
Dayum, this’s actually a pretty deep and insightful analysis sometimes tbh. I guess even after playing BBS, the reason I still found Xion to be my favorite female KH character is that she actually struggles throughout the course of the game, whether it due to being shunned by Riku and Saïx or eventually learning that she’s nothing more than a hollow puppet meant to serve the organization’s goals, which’s to basically SUCC all of Sora’s (and to an extension Roxas) memories and power after the organization failed to capture him. And then her main struggle is in either confronting this and returning to Sora or remaining with her friends. And she ultimately ends up paying the price for it in her final clash with her close friend... Aqua meanwhile felt the least interesting and fleshed out of the Keyblade trio imo. Terra struggled with the darkness in his heart and controlling it, basically making him Riku 2.0 (or 1.0, since he technically came first), whereas Ventus had his naïveté shattered by realizing his friendship wouldn’t last forever and learned what his true purpose is. Aqua just...well, more or less exists in order to help her friends, which makes her lack an identity of her own. But then we fast forward to 0.2, where I felt *much* more invested in her character since here we struggle with fighting in the realm of darkness, and being there for so long has truly taken a toll on her mind and made her have doubts and insecurities in her actions. A part of her truly wants to give up and give into the darkness, and yet a small part still doesn’t want to lose hope, hence why she desperately chases the mirages of Terra and Ventus she sees. And in the end, even with presented to a chance to finally escape, she instead sacrifices her freedom in order to save Riku and Mickey, which’s truly selfless and noble. So tl;dr, 0.2 definitely improved Aqua despite its super short length, and I’d say she more than deserved her happy ending once KH3 eventually rolled around.
-Unversed Fantasy- I don't know, but there's this running joke where Pancake talks about how some character named "Xion" is a terrible character. Not knowing who they are, I'd like to know why.
I think the reason Aqua seemed so bland in BBS is because she kind of was the 3rd wheel. Despite meeting Kairi, we knew nothing about her and BBS was explaining the fates of Ventus and Terra. It really didn't feel like Nomura had an idea what to do with Aqua's character, thus she spent most of her time chasing her friends shadows only to fall to darkness. I do agree with you though, 0.2 did bring alot of depth to Aqua. Where she has a long look in the mirror and does everything she can to keep herself from shattering to pieces, desperately clinging to even a semblance of herself and resisting the darkness for ten years.
Wait a justapancake video which actually analyzes the characters if kingdom hearts accurately and not 100% memes... This is heresy to the 572.69th degree
Just a Pancake, let me preface this by saying that I almost never subscribe to anyone. There are only a handful of channels on my subscription list, and you sir are on it. For so long, I've been forced to listen to everyone raving about how Aqua is the best character in the whole franchise. But now, finally, I've met someone who was perfectly able to describe exactly all the problems I've always had with her. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! I've thoroughly enjoyed all your videos so far, and don't mind you popping up on my notifications list (which normally is so annoying!) Just keep doing what your doing, because it's working for you! Now, if you could just admit to yourself that Xion is a good character. Then we'd be, like, kindred spirits or something.
Played Terra's story first (and yes, even I thought he was a dumb dumb), so Aqua gave me a very bad impression - a prime example being that damn scene after the Trinity Armour. Went with Ventus next, which just made me dislike her even more. After going through Aqua's route my opinion barely wavered, thus I never got why people liked her, and even thought she was just an annoying robot that never stopped complaining - if it's not about her friends being missing it's complaining about them to their face.
I think her bland personality in BBS was a result of never having been exposed to the darkness of the world. Real people have real emotions because they've faced real problems. She suffers from the Jedi dilemma. She's taught how to face the darkness as Eroqus's student, but not how to face the darkness as a person. Don't let your emotions overwhelm you. Don't show any passion. Anger leads to the darkside. The other characters in the series grow stronger over time because they face true despair, but Aqua was taught that the light will always win so she doesn't worry. She doesn't fear. She doesn't anything because she was brainwashed. She began to crack in 0.2 because everything she was taught by Eroqus had failed her. Her perception began to change as she (the keyblade's grand harbinger of light) was being beaten down day in and day out by the darkness. Only when hope failed her did she realize that she had been mistaken all along and in that moment, she learned to deal with her darkness as a person: let it in and deal with it on a personal level.
Guys, it's Xehanort in disguise! He has a RU-vid channel. We are all doomed! Applesauce is trying to take Just a Pancake as the 13th seeker of darkness. *EVERLASTING DARKNESS.*
Wow, I thought this whole video was going to be a troll, but you did an excellent analysis of Aqua and the redemption of her character. Maybe in KHIII we'll get some back story to see how Terra, Aqua, and Ventus all met for the first time and they'll do cutesy, realistic friendship stuff like Sora, Riku, and Kairi did. Mr. Just a Pancake, sir, could you do an analysis of the friendship and struggles of Roxas, Axel, and Xion next, please? I think the subject would make for a perfect video. I, no joke, believe Roxas is one of the most tragic and well-developed characters in fiction, and I'm sad every time to think about the sacrifices made by Axel and Xion.
I mean we DO see how Ventus met Aqua and Terra for the first time in BBS. Didn't go too well... But Terra and Aqua meeting for the first time, that would actually be really interesting!
To be honest, yes the relationship of Terra, Ven & Aqua is probably the worst one presented, but because Aqua acted more like a mother rather than “someone who always cared for friends too much” I find that’s why she only ever cared about finding Terra and Ven. Also you are pretty off when you say she doesn’t change facial expressions. She does on multiple occasions. When defending Terra to Hades When facing Vanitas in Neverland Finding out Terra killed Eraqus She did show emotion on many occasions, it’s the things she didn’t give two shots about where she showed no emotion. Hades & The Ice Collossus we’re like play things to her, that’s why she didn’t take them very seriously.
Never thought I'd say this about a kingdom hearts game but more cutscenes in BBS would have been cool. It would be useful to explain the relationship between all three and show how they became friends but the dont do that much. Wack
I really like this; using your brand of parody to instead actually say something serious and make valid critiques of the subject matter you poke fun at. Your parody is gold, but this is a welcome breath of fresh air as well. Make more of these!
I was expecting memes, but this is actually a pretty good analysis of what I found frustrating about Aqua's story segments in BBS. It really felt like the story was designed to focus on Ven and Terra exclusively, and then Nomura just tacked on a third character because he has a thing for trios in this series.
Well, I think there was a bit of expression in Aqua's voice when Vanitas broke the keyblade Terra made and gave to Ven. She called him a freak and attacked him.
i never really thought about her as an individual character, moreso just bbs and her role as a whole, but this actually made me think about that. i can't believe i found this kind of content HERE. but it was funny too. 10/10
Well, an unexpected good analysis in the end. Actually I never paid atention to this, since I consider all characters in KH very lame. All of theme are fucking flat and can be clasified in 3 types: edgy, melancholic and straight bad (save sora and most of the disney ones that remain the super happy and positive guys). I think that if you strip KH of it's wonderful battle system (that not all KH have), it's very good ost and a story so confusing that seems better than it actually is, it becomes a weird fantasy of a 12 year old wanker that mixed Disney with final fantasy because those are his wet fantasies)
Something else, regarding your statement about caring about the Friendship-based character's friends, the other thing that makes us more invested is that we don't have any knowledge about the fates of Sora's friends from the beginning of the game. We have to discover it through playing the game. However, in Birth by Sleep, you very much have the option of playing as Terra or Ventus before playing as Aqua, so there's a good chance that you weren't an idiot like me and would have played one or both of those paths, thus fully knowing what happens to Aqua's friends and killing any dramatic tension.
While it's true that the different trios get different screen-time in regards to their relationship dynamics, I think some of the differences between them are intentional; each trio represents a different sort of dynamic. Sora, Riku, and Kairi represent childhood friends, who have grown up together as friends and spend their time playing games and having fun. Roxas, Xion, and Axel represent work friends, who cover each other's shifts and meet for drinks after work so they can complain about their shit job that they can't bring themselves to quit. Ventus, Terra, and Aqua represent siblings, who pivot between being super protective of their younger brother who keeps trying to tag along and arguing over how dad gives *some* of them special treatment and yet is unnecessarily harsh with others. (As an added bonus, Hayner, Pence, and Olette represent school friends, who do assignments together and just try to forget about school as soon as they get free from it. And because Roxas never actually went to school and couldn't share that dynamic, he was constantly out of place in the group, and always felt like he was doing things wrong each of those 7 days.) Sure the Seasalt trio is a bit stilted and the Wayfinder trio doesn't get the development it needs, but I feel like a lot of criticism comes from wanting the dynamic to be different rather than recognizing the dynamics that are there. Aqua and Terra don't talk it out like best friends because they're too busy arguing like siblings. Roxas, Xion, and Axel don't have fun and play games because they don't have an island full of games to play on, just a ledge to relax on after work. Each trio is a wholly different dynamic, but we keep expecting them to act the same.
I think Japanese companies are moving away from massively delayed releases for major titles for games now. I think they get it translated and get the voice acting done at the same time as the Japanese version
It's always safer to set your expectations way low and find comfort in the fact that 2017 was a fucking incredible year for gaming and there are bound to be several games to tide you over on a platform you own while you wait another year, if not a backlog.
I'm behind on games by like 18 months lol, but KH I'll drop whatever when it comes out, take a day off work and just play it to avoid spoilers. I still need to finish up Yakuza 0 and I want to get Kiwami after that, and get Persona 5 for other ps4 exclusive games.
DetectiveEthanaterSpiritOfBobbyFulbrightGamer Terra is dumb. Everyone knows it, but people defend Aqua like she's the best character ever. That's not true at all.
@@breakerboy365 you could say the same thing about sora though. he didnt have much depth in him outside of friendship until very recently. before that it was always other people guiding him to where he needs to go, or the story just throwing him in to the next plot point
I like the fact that you said "When it releases next year". Cause this video was released back in January back when we thought it would be this year and then it gets delayed to January next year. Confirmed Just a Pancake is from the future and knew when Kingdom Hearts 3 would ACTUALLY release.
The thing about Aqua is that she is by no means a GOOD character. None of the female characters are, they all have the same personality because Nomura cant write females to save his life. But what makes Aqua so lovable and popular is her experiences and what she has to go through. The game constantly puts her into shit she simply doesn't deserve and by her situation, we learn to sympathize for her and even wish for her happiness.
TheWildWolfy Oh, that's where your wrong. Since when did Larxene ever sound unexpressive in her bitchy overdone tone? And don't even tell for a second that Xion is the same character as Aqua. Say what will about Xion, but from what your saying, Xion's a more thought out character then Aqua by a landslide because she starts off being obedient towards the organization, but quickly changes mindsets once she finds out what she actually is. And struggles with similar stuff but also who she is and what she has to do in order to well, stop the organization, while still caring about Roxas and Axel. Kairi is the only other possible character you could draw parallels to and that is exactly what the game wants you to think because "Hey look, another trio. I wonder who's the Kairi in this one? At least Kairi was more relatable in 1 because of the whole friendship triangle which is something that happen between friends in real life. Nomura may not write a cohesive story, but the females he portrays are not the same and some have some semblance of emotion. After 0.2 I like her a lot more and what you mentioned about her being popular before is spot on. The first "competant" female keyblade wielder is what some thought after playing the game and I had that same thought for a while. I'd say its enough to make me genuinely care about her than say Terra, whom I enjoy individually, sometimes.
Xion is a terrible character tho. She exists as a token female to make Roxas and Axel a trio and had to shoehorned in way after the fact that Organization **13** was established without a single mention of her. Her main plot significance was being killed off so Roxas would betray the Organization but in order to keep the continuity of KH2 they had to write it so he and everybody quickly forgets this.
Trevoy Damon Larxene is the most annoying and uninteresting member of the org. Lexues (whatever the big burly guy's name is) Is the most boring, but he is supposed to be like that. Silent and strong type. Larxene is just a token typical Bitch and nothing strikes her as interesting. Lets see... Zexion has internal struggles and at least does something... Marlucia is boring... but at least he isn't going to make my ears bleed. Every other member is at least slightly better or extremely better. Larxene is the only one to ever make me hurt inside. As for females... I thought Tifa was written well..... oh wait... she isn't a kh character. Aqua in 2.8 is actually interesting. I liked how she acted in that game. Nomura is getting better at writing her.
“Let’s hope KH3 does a similar thing when it releases next year” god, how I wish you’d been right 😢 0.2 was one of my favorites in the series, I wish the follow up had felt even half as strong. Here’s to hoping for the future of the series - Dark Road being as enjoyable and well written as it was reignited my hope
Lol, "lets's hope they do a similar thing when KH3 is released next year", by similar you mean despite questioning herself about the fight against the darkness being worth it and coming on top, she is now a vessel for Xehanort, lol she gave in, this was because of you!!!!
Wow.... I can't believe there was an actual analysis. I kinda liked her role in BBS just because she's trying to fix the screwups of Ventus and Terra. Which does make me sympathize ,but doesn't make her too compelling. You're kinda right.
I kept waiting for something entertainingly dumb to happen. But it didn't. It was all logical and introduced an idea about Aqua that I hadn't thought about before... Cool! I don't want you to stop with the memes, but I really appreciated this. :)
