Yeah not into deep dish but I'm in NY. It's okay. And I've had a decent deep dish up in Delaware from a Chicago based franchise place. Better than I thought it would be. Also I was starving and it was loaded with veggies.
We get shit for not having good pizza but I know 5 places in a five mile radius here in Philly just off the top of my head that will compete with the best slices out there. No deep dish bs..We love cheese and “gravy”(real Italian)So where does Philly fit into this..?
Deep dish is for tourists. Thin crust is better and you don't need fancy pants Giordano's or Lou Malnatis. Vinces by Midway airport is as good as it gets.
A good deep dish has a crunchy crust exterior and the interior is made of layers so it has a texture dimension, the toppings should be the freshest vegetables, with the finest cheeses and meats. Nah, I don’t know what I’m talking about lol

I was disappointed too Uncle Chael. I was in Chicago for a couple of weeks for job training in April. I had Lou Malnati's and you're not missing much. Next time you're out there try the Italian Beef sandwich!
So many lessons in this one. 1) go to Lou Menatie's 2) avoid the part of town they don't deliver to 3) Thin Crust is better. Now where do the toppings fit in to all of this?
Chael; Mi Famiglia is in downtown Oregon City on Main St and they have the best pizza I've eaten since moving to this area 6 years ago. Thin crust and they bake in an old school brick oven.
Old Italian Pie Shoppe where I live, they have a Godly deep dish. A deep pie crust filled with sauce and chunks of tomato and meats. Also Little Cesar's has a decent deep dish. Cheap and good.
When in Illinois, Monicals pizza is the best thin crust pizza, hands down. Had some friends driving through last month, ordered 5 pizzas ($108) and had them pick em up on their way back to Louisville. Shit is that good! NTM, the most generic salads that are also amazing
You want good pizza, if you're ever in Pittsburgh PA there's a little town called Belle Vernon. It's South of Pittsburgh on route 51. The pizza place is called Jake's pizza, delicious thin crust with amazing pepperoni. Or order with just cheese and sauce if that's your preference.
Btw, what you described is a Pan Pizza and not Deep Dish. That's what at least Google tells me, I searched 'pan pizza is the same as deep dish'. Result: Pan pizza usually refers to a thick crust pizza baked in a pan. Deep-dish pizza usually refers to a thin to medium thickness crust (not anywhere near a thick crust) in which the sides of the pan are very deep and allows for a thick pile of cheese and toppings. I'm from Chicago and only ate a deep dish once .. Now even doe Chicago is supposedly known for outsiders for the deep dish I've never knew many Chicagoan to order it if you want banging pizza go to Pete's pizza on Western if not father and son's on Milwaukee or Congress it's the best with their rib tip .. Ohhhh boiii ...
Chael, i know exactly what you mean as im very particular about my pizza as well. Us Aries are detailed about everything lol. Anyway the best Chicago deep dish i know in Southern California is in Moreno Valley called Chicago Pizza House. Its just like you expected it to be, and i also describe it like eating a lasagna with a fork. By the way the chef is from Rome, and i spoke some Italian with him the first time i went there. Great place for you to check out.
Lou Malnati’s will deliver to anywhere in The Country! They make a pizza and freeze it straight out of the oven. Get one sent to you, their number is on the website. Giordono’s is the other place, I am a Chicago native, and I think Lou’s blows them away. The Lou Malnati chain is owned by the family. That other place is just a chain.
My family and I were in Chicago a few months back for my sister's Navy graduation, and we had the same gameplan as Chael: if we're in Chicago, we have to get a deep dish(as well as a Chicago dog and some "Chicago" style popcorn). We went to a place called Giordano's, and it is the greatest pizza we've ever had in our lives. The only place that compares is a local chain, but the styles are very different. And it is kinda like he described: almost closer to lasagna than most other pizzas. It was very, very thick and absolutely stuffed with cheese and other goodies. If you're in Chicago, go to Giordano's.
You don't have a problem with Deep Dish Pizza... you have a problem with BAD Deep Dish Pizza. Lou Malnati's did you wrong... their pizza is amazing and they should have hooked you up with some, and I can almost assure you wouldn't have been disappointed. Though a fork works too, good Deep Dish Pizza you absolutely can eat with your hands (this is especially true on the day after). Cheese is fine for Chicago Deep Dish Pizza... but I prefer Sausage as the quintessential Chicago experience. And next time go all out for Lou's, with Gino's East or Giordano's as backup options, or Pequod's if you're lucky enough to be anywhere near it. And if you want some thin crust, Chicago's got damn good thin crust too, so go for that instead of a lesser Deep Dish (or do both, as I often do).
