@@TheAgingAscetic Using the old 5W charger is good and preferable for the older models of iPhones. Using it for new models isn't recommended though and can do more harm than good. New models of iPhones have inbuilt software which connects the battery and the software of the phone, making 20W the optimal power input for the battery and also making Apple's new 20W fast chargers the best chargers that you can use to preserve your battery for as long as possible. Using less than 18/20W or more than 20W can both damage your battery sooner. I have spoken with Apple technicians and service engineers who all told me this same story. Apple has made their software as such that charging the new models with anything other than 18W and 20W is not optimal. They heavily advised me on not using anything less than 18/20W. Keep in mind that Apple still doesn't have super fast charging or turbo charging, so there is no reason why you shouldn't charge the new models with their new 18W and 20W chargers.

I love the fast charging of my OnePlus 5. After 3 years I think I've lost maybe 30% capacity? .. so it still lasts for a whole day when in moderate use. More than enough. And even if it gets low because I forgot to charge it at night or used it a lot, I plug it in and it's full in +-30 minutes. It also doesn't get noticeably hotter when charging+using (though no games, only Yt or the browser). I just love it. Would never go back to slow charging.

I have a xaiomi with a 120w charger, and I'll bet that the battery lasts longer on it than my old Samsung with slow charging did. I plug it in briefly as needed, not overnight, and bounce it between 30 and 80 percent except on the odd occasion that I need to be away from the wall all day, where I'll let it go to 100. The heat it produces when charging below 80-90% isn't concerning, even at full tilt. My Samsung on the other hand, because of how slowly it charged, was plugged in overnight and used frequently while charging and/or with the battery well below 30% toward the end of the day, because leaving it charging for the better part of an hour to get back up to a good level wasn't practical.
@zorak20

Same here, I have a 72w charger, always between 30 and 85% and after a year the battery is still perfect so I understand all he's saying but I rather have that option that to have to wait 2 hours for a full charge.
@TCPUDPATM
@TCPUDPATM 2 года назад
So much good information here! One more thing - “fast charging” is 100% related to the size of the battery. The standard 5W charger is ideal for the original iPhone, but the new 18W charger is the SAME for the ~39xxmAh battery in the 11 pro max. It is NOT a “fast” charger. In other words, a 5W charger would charge the original iPhone just as fast as the 18W would charge the new iPhone (within a margin).

The discharged state of a Li-Ion battery (probably the most common type if not the only type) is much more dangerous than the 100% charged state. The reason is that if the voltage of that cell drops too much, metal dendrites will grow inside it and the battery becomes extremely unstable (read: will blow up when tried to be charged). This is why these batteries are fitted with a circuitry that will brick the battery completely if the charge level drops too much.

My realme came with a 33 W charger. It takes around 1 hour, maybe 1,5. It doesn't seem to overheat (the charger does, but not the battery). If I'd plug it overnight, it's supposed to know my sleep pattern and keep the battery at 80% until some time before I wake up where it would go to 100%, but I genuinely do not plug in my phone overnight anymore - it just doesn't make any sense to me since it takes so short to charge anyway.

The last 1% usually dies really quick in my experience. But yes, there is a "buffer" if you will call it that. Not really a buffer but there is software involved. And if you had a iPhone before (I hope they stoped doing it now) then you would most likely never see under 4 or 5% before it shut down anyway since they adjusted what numbers to show in the battery %. They had a feature that showed it had 100% for longer just to give an illusion of having better battery :P So when the iPhone finally said 99% it was basicly between 94 - 96% real battery life left.

For me, it's the complete opposite. The time my phone takes to go from, say, 95% to 90% is A LOT more than the time it takes to go from 15% to 10%. Higher percentages last more for me. EDIT: My last 1% is completely non existent lol.

After upgrading from 20w VOOC on Realme XT to 50w VOOC on Realme GT Neo, I don't think I will ever go back to slow charging phones. I can easily drive around my car for 15 minutes and get 50% charge on my phone. What this means is that my Powerbank I bought is smaller at 10000mAh and often it stays at home.

one technical flaw though: if the electrons were to be balanced on either terminals, then the battery is in a state of equilibrium or otherwise 0% charge. at equilibrium no further current/charge flow takes place which is why recharging is done at a higher voltage than discharging voltage.

Compare filling a glass of water with the faucet turned on full blast. The glass will fill up with water shooting out of the top of the glass. It looks full. But when you turn off the water faucet the glass is never completely full. So as the glass gets nearly full you slow the water down to get it full. This exactly how a cell phone battery works. Provides an example that everyone knows about. Feel free to use this.

Larger batteries can handle more charging current A 3.7V 10,000mah cell can take 30w charging with roughly the same cell degradation as a 4000mah cell charging at 10W The issue (for manufacturers) is if they give you a flagship phone with a 10,000mah battery, you won't use up your limited charge cycles anywhere near as fast, thus your battery will last far longer, as such, they won't make as much money off you (using 1 cycle every couple of days vs using 2-3 cycles every day) When I modded my S10 plus with a 10,000mah cell (total of 14,000 including the internal battery) I went from charging it 3 times daily, to only charging it once a day (and even then I still typically have around 30% left by the end of the day) So I easily tripled the service life of my battery, and added a massive reserve so if I need to, I can turn on power saving mode at 10%, and the phone will still have power the next morning

for the people who don't understand(probably no one bc he explained it really good) take it like this, when you jog it is likely for you to be tired in around 10-15 minutes if you run you might get tired around 5-7 minutes if your sprinting you might get tired in 30-60 seconds. and you will continue to lose your speed. the same is for charging, if you have fast charging it will lose the fastness faster than if you were to have slow charging. personally i like fast charging but this completley change my perspective on fast and sloow charging & overall i think that this is also pretty true. I mean the best case is if you were jogging bc you will take longer for it to charge, but in the end we still obvi get 100% in like less than 4 hours. Plus you can charge while still being active online. It doesn't change anything. in my opinion, get the charger with the slowest charger.

The second iphone 12 was charged with a 20w charger with a total of 94 charging cycles and the current design of the battery is 2823mAh of 2798mAh battery design. Battery healh 100%. I just charged my Galaxy S10 Plus for the first time last night. I was a bit surprised at the speed of charging. After watching this I turned off fast charging. Would that be your recommendation for that phone? As it is a preowned device, I am concerned to do what I can to preserve the battery health.

Meanwhile I can't go a day without everyone in my family who has an iPhone reaching for the charger after two hours or so of use. They looked at me weird when I told them to charge it at 40 until 80 percent. 🙄 the effects are short and long term 👌

@@jakefoxx7978 charging to 80 isn't worth your time. The only thing you should do is not use below 15 and use a slow charger if u want to make battery last longer

@@Kuri0 I've started to see how it doesn't matter if I charge to or over 80. Letting the phone sleep for a good while and not draining it has kept it strong even if I make it to just 67%. The thing is, there have been times where going below 35% "pissed it off" and the battery would be mildly good for a few days until I was careful again.

I was questioning myself, why youtubers don't talk about the disadvantages of fast charging. You did it nicely!!

It is the same reason why no car journalists talk about reliability, longevity, parts cost, repairability, etc., mainly because they are exposed only to the new stuff.

Aaron, such a well-delivered explanation, so when you travel, you ask truckers where to get a good meal for a fair price, I'd ask you what you use, 15a, 20a 30a? I'd also love to see you do a vid on power charging bricks...I bet tons of other viewers would as well, we all now know how to charge from home

And this is why I seen the option to only allow my phone to charge to 85% I love your videos! I just upgraded from the Galaxy S8 on Android 9 to the S21 on Android 11 and just updated to One UI 4 Wireless chargers are restricted to how fast your phone will charge. If you're using say a 30w wireless charger, 15w will charge a Samsung, 20w will charge an LG, and 10w charges a late model iPhone
