In this video I share my experience of the little-discussed dark side of that coveted and elusive state known as planner peace.

I am happily a recovering planner addict. I say it in all seriousness because let's all face it, it really is a form of addiction what else would drive us to purchase copious amounts of planners but here is how I think of the planner peace journey now from my spiritual/philosophical view: -a planner addict seeking planner peace -an addict seeking peace -addition.. peace Two extremes...often never to find complete-ness and lasting-ness together but a swinging of highs, lows and extremes....and so you have to choose: -do you want to be chasing forever for the thrill of it or -are you done chasing? -if you are done chasing then you may want to find a new type of peace...something in the middle where you are not chasing endlessly but you are also not needing peace....I have found much more practical peace there

Yes, I guess like anything it can become an addiction. Glad you've found an equilibrium. :)

So eloquently said! I completely understand!!!! I judge my planner by whether it is motivating me to actually complete my “to do” list in real life. I step away from everything, and write down -what do I need from a planner? What parts of my life need managing or could be improved by use of a planner? I needed to have a journal always there for prayer notes and not go looking for one which would always get lost in my condo. I desperately needed to plan my meals for health and budget reasons, and needed to track my body’s reaction to certain foods. The traveler’s notebook is my current solution. I am in an A5 with 6 inserts- a horizontal week on one page with a to-do list on the opposite page, a monthly with a notes column for checking when bills have been paid, a prayer journal, a food planner/journal, a password/address book, and blank lined paper for notes. Searching for these perfect inserts was like having six little planners in one notebook. So… Just my thoughts…

I think I define planner peace differently than most people. For me planner peace means having the option of using whichever planner strikes my fancy at the time. I once thought that when I bought a planner I was stuck with it for a year even if I wasn't enjoying it. That's not peaceful. However, I will say that no matter how many different planners I try out I always go back to my travelers notebook in the end.

That's a great definition! It really takes off the pressure. I love it - thank you for sharing this perspective!

I have finally discovered my aesthetic...it has to do with an holistic approach. When I am tempted to buy a new book I hold it in my hands for size...I flip the pages for texture...I imagine/visualize it in use...I reconsider my current system for overall aesthetics...I also consider the cost. For me its more about fitting my notebooks, journals, and planners into the whole scheme of my life. I dont work a 40 hour week and list making is more time consuming for me than simply getting up every day and starting with the first thing I want or need to do. I use a monthly layout only then a spiral notebook for daily thoughts and journaling, collage pages, financial pages...its all just day by day in a holistic big picture plan/vision. I dont track anything and my lifestyle is pretty quiet. I do travel but only locally then write a journal piece about my experience. Overall...I still love paper and journals and the process of trying new things...but, I had to slow down because I just dont fill them...ever. I am using what I have on board, creating my own planner/Journals...maybe to sell!!! The struggle is REAL :-)

As a planner girl and creater of a planner group on fb, Planner peace is at most a myth because as humans we evolve and change and so does our needs. Therefore planner peace is temporary. But definitely obtainable. Lol at dark side of planner peace. Blessings Shirlene

I have to confess, listening to your dilemma, especially regarding a trip to Greenland, I am very happy I have diverted to a digital planner. I lose the exceptional fun of physically holding a planning. But I gain the ability to switch around without adding to the stuff in my house. I have exchanged collecting stuff for simplifying my life and house. I’m glad you have gotten some clarity with your hobby.

My sympathies. I've experienced a slightly variation. I have a squirrel moment when I see a new system on RU-vid. It magically throws itself in my Amazon cart. Unlikely you, I'll spend an entire weekend moving everything into it - calendar, tasks, lists etc.. Then I'll discover It doesn't work for me around Wednesday. I'll spend the next few days switching back to my Cousin in my trusty TN. One would think I would learn, but I don't. I have gotten better about carrying my cashier monthly calendar system to system so I don't lose major dates. It's absolutely is a hobby and my relaxation tool. You've got a good technique, though - use the new one for things lists etc, or at least not for calendaring and task.

I hear you :) My compromise is to use ring bound planner, and I create my inserts, I have always a new idea. This makes me also possible to investigate new planners, and take ideas from it. But ... I also want to buy a happy planner, a small, a big, and all the hobonichis, etc :D

I don't think planner peace always means having ONE and being done. You were so right when you said that as long as you were enjoying it, it's working for you and not burdensome, then you have planner peace! I have a Fitness Planner that I use to track my eating habits, headaches and menstrual cycle; a mini HP for RU-vid; a traveler's notebook with a monthly calendar and lots of note pages and a Fauxbonichi (LOL) for my daily to-dos, scripture writing, prayer needs, and daily journal entries. It works for me SO well!! I may spring for a real hobonichi next year!

I understand that planner peace is hard to get, but I love your videos. You have really creative ways of organizing all the aspects of your life and it helps me with my own system. The separate planner for budget and expenses for example is awesome. I can totally relate to having more control over a budget planner when that's the only thing in the book. XD

I think much of your conundrum may be the use of the term "planner" to represent your planning system versus the book/binder you enjoy collecting. I may be misunderstanding the predicament, but my initial thought was that you have found planner peace for your planning system... but you have also become a planner collector and that is a whole other situation lol.

Yes, I'd be happy to! It's quite basic - essentially I just write down my expenses every day and then add up the total at the end of the week, and sometimes divide them into categories. So i joined the planner world in 2013. I had just bought a mini planner from walmart but it was pink so i loved it. Since then, every year ive purchased just small cheap planners. until i came across erin condren then found the happy planner. so a few weeks ago when i bought mine i already had a 10 dollar planner from target. I was so excited to decorate the happy Planner in stickers. Now ive learned when planning i actually need as much white space as possible and dont like things to look messy. So, I learned something new about myself. But no planner peace.

I love your videos! 😂 You always seem to capture the plannernerd conversations I have in my head and make them sound sane. 😉 In regard to travelers notebooks, I think they are the best covers for bound books and I prefer to use them for all my journals and bound books including but not limited to the Inkwell Press Quarterly books, Moleskine journals, leuchtturm1917 books, Hobo Weeks and A6, Jibun Techo, etc. For thinner books, I string them down the middle; for the thicker ones, I wrap the string over the front and back covers. It gives me all the benefits of a travelers notebook--pen loops, pockets, carrying other things, gorgeous covers--and allows me to use what I have. I had several TNs before I got into bound planners so this way I didn't have to buy anything new. Also, the additional clearance all around (usually about 1/2" top and bottom as well as sides) makes it easier to carry fountain pens and accommodate tabs and bookmarks. HTH!
@VeganOrganizer
@VeganOrganizer 7 лет назад
That's a great point - I agree that TNs function best as covers for bound notebooks. The only problem is that the Zinnydori Unicorn, which I currently covet, doesn't come in A5 or A6 size, just standard and personal. However, you've given me an idea - maybe I could use the personal size as a cover for my A6 Hobonichi?!?! Thanks for the inspiration!!
@LilDivette
@LilDivette 7 лет назад
+Vegan Organizer We plannernerds have to stick together! 😉 As a matter of fact, I'm using the Hobo A6 as an art journal for the 2nd year in a row and I keep it in a Chic Sparrow Sidekick which is a TN size. It's perfect not only as a cover but the pockets allow me to carry all my watercolor supplies (I did a video on it if you're interested). Have fun experimenting!

My husband burst out laughing when he heard you say "the dark side of planner peace", lol. As to your topic it seems like some people are at peace with switching out a planner every few months, or even seasonally. I am a one and done type of person, plus I love to look back at my planner and see a filled schedule. The weeks has provided all of my current needs. When it comes to TNs I think they work best for people who are more crafty and DIY. I am not into printing my own pages or creating my own notebooks, that I think is in large part why a TN has not worked for me. I do have one field notes TN that is very utilitarian for some note catching. Thank you for your videos and the discussion! It is interesting to think about. BTW, have you done an updated overview of the finances in the happy planner? I use to use my weeks as a financial tracker as well, but it was not working out.
@VeganOrganizer
@VeganOrganizer 7 лет назад
Thanks for the comment! Yes, I also like to look back and see all the completed planner pages, which is why I'm reluctant to switch out a planner in the middle of the year unless it really isn't working or I don't want to track/plan the thing I was using it for any more. So I just end up acquiring more planners throughout the year lol! I totally agree with you about TNs. I also find them frustrating because I prefer nice chunky books rather than smaller notebooks. And no, I haven't done an updated overview of my finances HP - glad to know you would be interested! It's basically just a list of expenses and then I do a weekly total, but I'd be happy to go over it at some point :)
@tinak.p.258
@tinak.p.258 7 лет назад
Interesting - for me it's quite the opposite. I like the idea of a "fresh start" and I split my year roughly in work phases of 3 months at a time in which I try to focus on specific priorities. When I am working really well, my planner gets very messy, because I don't take time to watch my handwriting or look out for a specific pen. In those cases I would like to start with a new planner because I want it to look a little more put together again. However when I am not working with enough focus, the optics are better, but I accumulate unfinished tasks, that I carry from week to week. And that sends me on a guilt trip each time I look at it and then I want to start new, so that a new, focused phase can begin without unfinished business holding me back. In both cases I feel an urge for a new planner.
@VeganOrganizer
@VeganOrganizer 7 лет назад
That's a really good point! I know what you mean about wanting a fresh start when a planner gets too messy - I always feel that very strongly when my Cousin or Weeks is approaching the end of the year and is covered in ink smudges, with some of the pages torn/squished, etc. - I can't wait to start the fresh clean new planner! That's definitely an important element of the whole equation...

Yesterday I had this revelation that I actually don't need my planner combies to be in synch, regarding the year cycle. If I am using an academic planner for my work planning in weeks, and a spring hobonichi original for my dailies I actually CAN justify starting a new planner every 6 months without leaving any of them half empty!

I use a bullet journal, so I am constantly trying new things and seeing if they work; my "spread" changes from week to week but if I don't like it I can go back the next week, if I see something shiny-new I can try it out, all while staying in my teeny-tiny Rhodia webnotebook (one thing I have learned about myself; if it's not small enough to fit in the pocket of my jeans, I'm not gonna carry it consistently.) So basically, I have planner peace. But when I see those Traveler's Notebooks, my brain just goes WANT, even if I have no actual use for one.

I also had one planner for about 10 years which was the Franklin Covey Classic Daily pages. Then I got tired of keeping such a larger planner. I also felt my life was chained to the planner. Since then I have been struggling to find planner peace. I currently have a Hobonichi planner (A6) that I carry around. Although it is smaller I still find it to be too big to carry in my purse. I want only one planner but I do struggle to just stay with one.

As a planner addict, (there is so much worse to be addicted to), I look for planner contentment . . . For a full year. The mini planner I carry is an academic planner, so I get to replace it each spring. (But I use the same zip up cover to protect it each year....for now anyway). My Transformer planner that stays on my desk, runs from January to December, so I get to replace those planners in the winter. So twice a year I have the opportunity to change a system if I so choose. The past couple of years I have been able to use my planners for a full year (and 1 for 18 months- yay me!) So I am content. Yes I have to work hard not to buy the next pretty object that comes along. So, enjoy your planners and your organized life. Honest self-reflection is important, but, life is too short to be stressed about a hobby (planner collecting and changing is a hobby that also helps us to be organized). And life is too short to be judged by others. Thanks for sharing. By the way, I love purple and I love bright multi-colors. Your planners are beautiful. Enjoy them!

Love your post! I've felt this at times and think perhaps it's a cue to do more focused writing or drawing since we are obviously obsessed with paper and pens but how to satisfy our appreciation of small goods craftsmanship? Buy shoes?? I would also include handbags but I've achieved purse peace and am no longer tempted to purchase those, just maintain what I have. I felt sad about giving up the handbag hunt, however! I DO, though, still need to buy acid-free paper to stuff my purses - that will be fun! Right now I'm at the shoe phase but getting close to finished so I have yet to see if writing and drawing will be a satisfactory substitute for planner hunting.
@VeganOrganizer
@VeganOrganizer 7 лет назад
Thanks! I love your phrase 'small goods craftsmanship'; that's a perfect designation for it. The handbag hunt is also quite a big project - I also feel relatively at peace in that department (though I'm not adverse to considering new options occasionally!), but it doesn't make me nearly as sad as the thought of not buying any more planners! It's an interesting idea that maybe writing more could serve as a substitute for planner buying...
@nancysocal1675
@nancysocal1675 7 лет назад
I've been thinking about this some more and realize that planner hunting is a unique activity because it serves as the basis for creating collaborative art based on hope, not one of social commentary, but purely one of earnestness. We plan and journal so we can do our best, so we can prove that we did our best. Premade planners (I've made my own planners plenty of times and am disregarding that approach for the sake of this pondering) give us a beautiful structure upon which to express our own creativity/choices (are they not one and the same?) which is/are based upon hope, the hope that we are creating a better self, a better life or, at the very least/most, the recognition of what our life is and is not. The actual pursuit of the material goods also brings into play a mix of calm, intense focus required to sort through a current crop of products displayed on the shelves or online in the minutes between external obligations. During the hunt I experience pings of pleasure, "Oh, my, isn't that clever?" alternating with defeat ("Why can't I find what I want?Why?!) and, if lucky, a surge of delight when, after turning a planner over and over, inspecting it like a newborn and staring it intensely in the eyes, I realize it is a Perfect Planner and I'm going to take it home with me. I can't think of any other activity that intersects collaboration with other artists (the maker of the planner) and the promise of persisting hope. It's not a feeling I want to give up and I realize that despite the pay off other hobbies/undertakings provide, the hard slog of creating something from scratch, something that may take a dark turn (as in writing or drawing), feels quite different from the structure and tactile pleasure provided by a beautiful product and the optimism involved in this particular art, the art of planning - the marks we make upon the pages that represent our life, our good effort in this lifetime. And maybe because it's so very hard to keep up that optimism that I feel the need to return to the stores, so that I can be bolstered by the beauty and creativity of a new product, so I can thrill to the hunt (my respiration increases as I rifle hurriedly through the displays, knowing these are moments stolen between appointments), get lost for a window of time in single-minded purpose. Life is tough, and pretties make it better.

This comment took my breath away. You've articulated the whole endeavour so beautifully and articulately that I'm in awe. What an incredible observation. I think you've really summed up the psychological processes behind our love of the perpetual planner hunt, and why it feels sad to have to give it up. Thank you for putting it all into words so eloquently; I'm in awe!!

Interesting. So, my current version of Planner Peace is that I slide a Hobonicci Weeks into my Personal Malden. (Had to cut a portion of the corner off to make it work.) This means I can just carry the Weeks when I want a small footprint, and yet I have the rings of the Malden to customize -- with my lists, project plans, notes etc.. I sometimes write a daily schedule in the rings, sometimes not. My days vary a lot. I think this will be my solution for a personal size planner. But it doesn't do much for memory keeping, gratitude.journaling or tracking my studies. Those are still randomized over miscellaneous notebooks and systems.

Cool! I like that idea - a combination of bound and ringed.

I haven't yet achieved perfect peace with my Hobonichi Cousin and Original Avec, but if I did, I know I'd miss creating dashboards and dividers and other crafty bits and bobs like I can do to customize my TNs and ringbound planners (and then switch out when I get bored and create new ones.) It seems silly for me to spend so much time pimping out a ringbound with shiny new dividers that I will then forsake in favour of my Day Designer or one of my Hobonichis. I've tried to sate my creative desires by adding collages and stickers and washi to the Hobo pages but the Tomoe River paper doesn't want to cooperate with me and the kind of decor that is possible to do in a bound planner isn't easily interchangeable or modular the way TN/ring dashboards etc are. Anyway, thank you for posting what I suspect a lot of us have been thinking but weren't able to articulate!

Thank you so much - I'm really happy you can identify with this! I was a bit nervous that everyone would think I was insane, so I'm glad to know it's not just me :) I agree with you about the Hobo pages - Tomoe River paper is amazing, but I don't find it conducive to a lot of stickers or washi either.

I totally understand! I really wanted a weeks this year but I have no use for it. I carry my cousin with me everywhere and everything is in my cousin. I also cant justify the price just to replicate some of the thing things in my cousin just so I can have a weeks. I am really happy with my cousin but I want to buy a weeks anyway. It isnt very good for my wallet.

Yes - the eternal dilemma! We want to use all the beautiful planners, but it's impossible! Though I still think with regards to the price, our hobby isn't as expensive as many others, so I don't feel too bad about that - it's just sad to buy a planner and then end up not being able to use it!

I'm not a planner hoarder (I have just 2) and I love undated planners! lol It's funny for me to hear you say that you hate them. I'm actually a notebook/paper hoarder but I'm working on it. Not being able to bookbind anymore helps by not giving me the excuse "I will make a sketchbook with this" or something like that. I feel that maybe the people who enjoy the undateds are the ones who feel they really need the flexibility of not having to use the planner every day or every week or to be able to start a planner at any given day of the year without wasting paper. In my case the wasting paper thing is a huge deal as I am a paper addict. It makes me sad to not be able to use a paper that I like, so I even converted old planners I had into mind dump notebooks (I'm glad I didn't have many, just 5, and 2 I'm keeping untouched because I like the design. It's inspirational, like a book). Anyway, the point is I'm on a notebook variation of your planner peace every since I got into ring notebooks (actual removable bind rings, not binders) and than evolved to the disc system. Those 2 are my notebook/skechtbook/paper peace. It's what I love to use and works for me for everything I need but I still get sad when I like notebooks on bookstores because I know that if I buy them, I'm not going to use and they will just frustrate me lol Sorry for the long text.

I'm almost to my planner peace. But truth is I'm always looking for something new. I genuinely love my happy planner, and I could continue using it because its fits me. I have ot frankenplanned to my happiness. But I am exploring other options. Not because I'm unhappy, but because I wonder if it could be better. Ive always been that way. I love mac and cheese, its perfection on ots own. But add bacon and its a new thing. Add hot sauce and its a new thing. If that makes sense. You can have peace and still explore other options.

I have been struggling to find planner place but I think I just need to face the real truth that I love TNs and I don't really want to settle because I love change. I have used everything from Hobonichi Cousin (hated the paper) to Filofax (hated the ring system) to happy planner/arc (hated the discbound system). So far, I prefer the Moleskine Cahier notebook inserts due to the size. It's like a slightly wider standard regular Midori and easier to write it. A5 is great for school notes for me because I can actually fill the damn notebook without excess pages in back. Standard regular is my budget planner and wallet. I want to try a b6 for my actual bullet journal but right now, I'm happy with cahier size, a5 and standard.

An interesting video, normally I am giving you cudo's for enabling the rest of the planner addicts out there😲 So now what? Still I keep looking and checking out planners. Hobonichi's are my favorites and tried Jubin Techo and it has become a great health tracker for me. For giggles I bought another spring start Weeks just to have a new fresh book to start this time of year so I'll end up with 2 half filled weeks if I buy another one in Jan? So you are not alone in planner grave yards💐

i totally understand what you are saying BUT if for instance you want the travelers notebook, the cover can be exchanged out for different things and you do TRAVEL. and i think the only person that is stopping you purchasing more is you. covers are just dressing and if you get plain inserts for them they have more uses.
@VeganOrganizer
@VeganOrganizer 7 лет назад
Yes, but I don't use TN inserts for anything, so I really can't think of a reason to buy the covers - so sad!! You're right that there's nothing wrong with buying covers anyway, but I just feel like I can't really justify it if I have no possible use for them :(( I think I just like the journey better than the destination, lol! :)

I think planner peace may be related to personality type. I believe planner peace is fleeting and.... those who get antsy about planners (and thus don't get peace at all or peace that is short lived) may be More type a . Or Meyers Briggs tj or sj perhaps. I am a potentially type a in an ADD and OCD persons body who also is an FP . the artistic p person in me likes change and pretty things . The perhaps type a in me along with OCD won't find correct strategy or fucntinality ever. The add won't allow me to commit or follow through. I will never have planner peace.

Perhaps you might simply try new systems as pretty planners first. They are supposed to be fun and you would not feel too guilty indulging too much. If they work for you you might change them into functional planners next... A lot of people just love the concept of setting up a planner and then loose interest. Setting up involves a lot of creativity and that is the fun part, at least for me! :-) Maybe a good business idea - setting up planners for other people... I use the hobonichis as well and I really love them. Yet they are a bit static. Ringbound planners are more versatile because you can always change them so completely, create a new look, new inserts, etc. Hobonichi is more about content, basically you can change what you write down and the design you use doing just that. With the new Filofax Originals I feel tempted to change back into the ringbound system. I know Hobonichis are great and exactly what I want but some tiny part of me wants to go into the adventure of setting up a new Filofax... I still keep a Filofax for pretty planning althogh I really do not need it anymore. Just sentimental, I guess, and as an outlet for creativity...
@VeganOrganizer
@VeganOrganizer 7 лет назад
You're right - the idea of setting up a new planner is very exciting, but often once we've been using them for a while they just become part of the routine. And it's true that ringbound planners are great for their flexibility, being able to switch things up etc...

My BuJo is my planner peace even though I have happy planners, ringbound and a chic sparrow TN. Unfortunately, while I would love to love TNs, I just don't.
