I can't remember console price INCREASES ever being a thing before this console generation. Now we're seeing it all over the world, and it's finally hit the US with this $50 increase for the new PS5 Digital Edition. Three years on, console prices should be going DOWN, not up. I guess we can thank rampant inflation for this.

It's the same reason companies like Unity have done insane shit like they have or why Epic is steering it's entire company into the dead as shit Metaverse crap. Em... Disc version is cheaper 50$ if you buy. Anyway it is stealth price increase for digital edition. Maybe because it is now 1TB SSD internal. Also, if you buy disc add on for it will cost you 530$ in the end, 20$ less than Disc today. LOL. So, it is more expensive and cheaper.

I'm unreasonably annoyed Matt said PS3 and PS4 slim but didn't give the PS2 slim the HONOR it deserves. The PS2 slim was a true slim! It was like 70% smaller (made up % cuz I do own both chonk and slim)
And did they market any of them as “slim” officially? The PS1’s “psone” was just that, PS2 and PS3 Slim/super slim were just marketed as “PS2/PS3, and I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure PS4 slim was just PS4 as well… not sure why he expects them to call the PS5 slim a PS5 Slim all of a sudden when they’ve never done that before… And I gotta go because “slim” is starting to feel like it’s not a word anymore since I’ve said it so many times.
Facts! This internal storage increase should’ve been here when the ps5 first came out, not now while we already have the damn console but with less storage, it’s like they’re just trying to suck us dry out of money. It doesn’t justify it at all
They should of instead done a redesign and put a second m.2 slot in. There's no better feeling for PC gamers like myself than knowing that if I can't install some games, I just need to pay like $50 for a SSD and I'm sorted. This is why I choose PC, consoles are nice, but the design is half baked from a user point of view.
WD Black and Samsung 980 Pros have been $99 and Sony would use a lower quality drive at manufacturer cost, so yeah there's no reason it shouldn't have 2tb storage.
Sony are being a little greedy. I don't think anyone who already has a PS5 will be remotely interested in the slim anyway, just new customers won't have a choice because this new model replaces all the others.
My day one release works just fine. The disc drive is a must since 95% of my games I buy physical and cleaning it once a year stops me from having any problems with it. I just wish game companies continue to make physical media, its an option 66% of people wont choose, but for us 33% is a big deal
Digital is only gonna become more prevalent, with physical media you own it forever, but when you buy digital games you only have a temporary license to use it. That can be taken away at Sony or Xbox discretion

Adding the disk drive after the purchase is a nice option and I get the business sense for making that the reason. I think the better look would’ve been drop the disk model to $450 keep the all digital at $400 and sell the drive add on for $80. That way you don’t overtly look like you’re gouging out the bottom
Well... You don't know the cost of making the console? They are already selling the console at a loss... Hoping to make back the money through game sales. That practice isn't new since that has always been the norm in the gaming space.... However this time around these newer consoles are more advanced and expensive to make. Plus the economy is in bad shape compared to previous years.

I quite like the idea of the drive being removable or being able to add it later if you have the digital version, it also makes it a lot easier to replace the drive if it becomes faulty somewhere down the line, but the Digital version shouldn't have gone up in price and the $30 extra for a vertical stand is an absolute joke, especially when the adverts for the new "slim" version show the console displayed vertically!.

I feel like you would be foolish to buy the Slim version now. You're already spending quite a bit, you're better off spending that extra 50 and getting the version with the disc drive. Even if you have no plans to play physical, it could come up in the future. Especially when certain digital games can get removed due to licenses running out, coming across a physical version on clearance(while the digital is still full price) or whatnot.
@@krislarsen6546 an internal disc drive can also be replaced anyway. thats not an issue. most systems had internal drives if not all of them. i never had any problems with any of my game systems disc drives and let me tell you that i had many of them and still have because im a collector and i have tons of systems. i dont think its worth it buy a slim over the original PS5 only because of this drive. someday the external drives for the slim wont be available anymore and the PS5 will also become outdated when new systems comes out in the next years. with the reviews and reports i saw , i prefer the original PS5 but thats a personal choice. there is also probably a PS5 PRO coming out by the end of the year. i also guess a PS6 will come out in 2025 and by that time probably the Switch 2 and a new Xbox will be out too.
Just getting a ps5 very recently. At first, hearing this news was disheartening for me cause I wanted a smaller ps5. Seeing it now, yeah I have no regrets. It's still a chonky boi
You're better off saving the money for the disc drive and vertical stand and putting it towards a 2tb storage drive which are on sale often these days and you'll have 3tb in total.... It's also worth mentioning that the new colored panels will also be $50 and I'm sure Sony will give you lots of cool colors to entice you to buy them...folks, they have effectively taken microtransactions into the hardware space.😄
Not going to lie... Unless you really REALLY like PS5, you're better off spending that money on a cheap computer with a decent motherboard so you can upgrade it down the line. The top thing that annoys me to no end on consoles is that they only have 1 storage drive, the second one is that if things like the GPU break, they basically become e-waste.
@@Deja117 people that buy consoles aren't looking to buy a PC and deal with software and upgrading components...besides, to be able to play the games that are on consoles you're going to have to spend a lot more on a decent PC which the graphics card alone can cost more than a console. Also, there are a lot of people that buy consoles for their kids and the convenience of "plug and play" and to set it up in their living room. Not to mention that not every console game is available on pc. At least not right away anyway... I don't see many people buying a hefty PC to set it up on their TV stand to play spiderman. That's the point of consoles, for people that don't want to deal with PCs.

They have. I bought a disc version for my sister for 449. If people don’t buy them up, they’ll likely do another sale around the holidays or allow retailers to give crazy deals until they’re gone.
In my head I just hope this leads to people buying the physical model for the value and this leads to the industry supporting physical media into the next few generations
I like having the disc option for my ps4 that I had it was 50/50 but why still by discs is because ur essentially renting the game if it’s digital sony/Microsoft can take that game away at anytime they won’t but if have a disc then never have to worry that becomes a problem

Now you have to DL some files from internet regardless and if they decide to erase their game, you won't be able to and your disc will be effectively useless. Also, to play games, you need to install them anyway, which is the same as DL them directly from the store, except you still need to physically exchange your discs that at that point will become just a mean to start your games. Not to mention that some "physical" releases sometimes are just a case with a code inside to DL a game. Going physical now it's only if you want to collect the game cases for collection. 😔

It holds true to games like the Spyro Remake where only the first game of the trilogy is actually on disk and the other 2 need to be downloaded. But 99% of games, you can still normally install and play. Some may be buggy, because you are missing a day one patch, but they are still playable from start to end. If physical media dies one day, it will be a massive loss for consumers. Sure, no problem for these millions of people who only play only one multiplayer game and nothing else, but if maybe the PS6 or whatever comes next will not have a disk drive, then the console will literally be useless after Sony shuts down the store servers. Like they already kinda did with the PSP. Atleast the download list is still available there. But also being restricted to the PS store, which has ridiculous prices, is so bad. It gives them full control over pricing.
It's what happens when one company is an obvious top dog for years. Xbox fucked it with the One and gave Sony the time to shine. Nvidia is another great example of this.
Kevin Kenson made a great point. Sony is the only console manufacturer who has an entire home entertainment range. Receivers, speakers, TVs, headphones, subwoofers, projectors, sound bars. They OWN Blu-Ray. Microsoft, game publishers, and movie distributors need to pay them for the license. There's no way the disc drive is departing the PlayStation brand for the PS6. They're the top ecosystem player in home entertainment. I think the disc attachment is an easy way to gain that cash. The default PS6 may be digital, but they'll have a snap-on accessory like this.
@@QH96 They like to hold onto old tech despite how unwieldy it may be by today's standards, they're still using fax and floppy disks in business (even though the government is trying to encourage companies to drop floppy disk storage). They're not going to drop disc based mediums for the PS consoles any time soon.
I've been in a unique situation where I have beaten Sony every time they did a price increase on both the hardware and PS Plus. At least until holiday 2024 when I need to renew PS Plus and potentially buy a PS5 Pro. And those alone will probably cost between $700-800

No it wouldn't. Sony already makes a ton of Ultra HD Blu-Ray players and for them to make this detachable via USB-C would cost them more as they would be destroying a ton of their own products in the meantime. Why would anyone buy a Ultra HD player if they could get a datable one for the PS5 for less than 3x the price? This isn't the PS2 era where everyone was going out to buy PS2's instead of DVD players, and Sony was doing this to protect themselves and more importantly the market. Not to mention how easily this integrates with the PS5 to provide a seamless design
Digital purchases are a glorified “admission ticket” to play the game you paid for until it’s taken away. I’ll always support physical releases. Sticking with current model. If anything the only reason to “upgrade” to the newer model would’ve been if they added physical ps2 and 3 backwards compatibility. As it is now it’s not worth it at all if you already have a ps5

It's crazy that you have to buy the stand separately for even more money when the current PS5 comes with literally everything in the box for less money. So if you buy the new digital edition for $450, then add the disc drive for $80, and then the stand for $30, you will have paid right at $600 after tax.

The old stand helped the console more horizontally than vertically but now that they used a different method to keep it horizontal they see no reason to keep giving a stand for something that the console doesn't really need.

If you want this version of the PS5 vertical, the stand is 100% required. The bottom isn't completely flat on the new one and it falls down if you try to stand it up vertically without the stand.

It’s cheaper to get the disc one for $500 all in instead of getting the digital one for $450, plus $80 for the disc drive attachment; that’s $530 total. It’s more cost effective to buy the $500 one than the $450 one; you’ll always want to save $30. I read all about it. Idk if it’ll include Astro’s Playroom too.

Sony has never officially called their consoles slim before. That’s just a small mistake, it was named slim by the community. They’ve always just called it the refreshed model of the console

Xbox really doesn't get enough credit for how impressive the Series S is from a consumer standpoint. People constantly bring up it's technical constraints (as if the fastest selling console isn't one that's still weaker than the XOne/PS4 and PC just never had different hardware), but the fact that they actually dropped a new console that's significantly smaller and cheaper is amazing because it's the trend of technological innovation we're supposed to be seeing but just haven't in the past several years.

Series S is going to be an issue once we start seeing actual current-gen games consistently. The consoles have existed for years and we still don't have a lot of current-gen exclusive titels especially AAA
The Series S is crapped on because of the constraint that Microsoft places on game makers that games made for the Series X have to run on the Series S as well, with all features being the same (resolutions can be different). So games get dragged down on the Series X for the sake of the S. Baldur's Gate 3 almost didn't happen on the Xbox because they couldn't get the split screen feature to work on the Series S, but they got an exemption to only include it on the X.

I think the new PS5 model won't be cheaper until after Christmas, around the middle of 2024, Sony also wants people to buy remaining stocks of the normal PS5 and doesn't want all customers to wait until this "slim" model is available. imho
When the PS4 slim and XB1S came out they were improved over the original and cheaper than when the original consoles released. Even MS is doing this with the all digital X comes out. Same $499 price with no disk drive. The 2TB SSD is nice tho.
They don’t care about the digital PS5, less than 10% of PS5 sold have been digital models. So they held firm the price on the disc model sku and increased the digital one.
Because they're looking at the market which currently is telling them that 80% of sales is coming from digital...if they didn't give people the option of a disc drive they would have gotten a lot of backlash if the PS5 released with just 1 all digital console... and they would have lost part of the market that has slow or no Internet like in rural cities and countries... I have a friend in Iran that says he has to go to a library or some communication center to use the Internet and even then he's only allowed 1 hr...they are very strict over there when it comes to media consumption.

Yeah, it does help with repairability. Disc drives are very common to break on consoles. I do wonder if it has a replaceable SSD, because if not it would still be very bad.
This is not an upgrade or a downgrade, its just another PS5. If your only incentive to buying this is the 1TB storage - guess what? You can buy a 4TB external hard drive for a 1/3 of the price of the console. This PS5 slim is for people who don't have a PS5 yet, not an upgrade or replacement for people who already have a PS5.
There was never a "SLIM" version in the actual name of the consoles, all of them were just slimmer versions of the regular console. But of course not just slimmer but also cheaper to produce.

This is 1 console. It is a digital only console. With Detatchable Disc Drive. You can buy it pre assembled for cheaper. Or buy the standalone model and install it yourself for 80$ Think of Xbox 360 days. One came with a hard drive. One did not. (But you could install it yourself.)

The only reason they increased the price is cause they were selling ps5’s at a loss for a long time because they over engineered it and wanted to get as many out as possible to beat Microsoft now they’re trying to make a profit on it
Ok what I’m really curious about is if the disc drive being sold for the digital version means easy repair/swap of a broken disc drive on the non-digital version. Easy, user-accessible repairs is always a win!
It shouldn't be any different than any other disk drive but judging by the images of the drive the difficulty will be taking it out of the housing. Knowing Sony, they won't make that easy with a few simple screws...they likely have it sealed so you can go buy a new one instead of fixing it.😄
@@Fetidaf we're not talking about the console itself, just the attachable disc drive. It's in that proprietary enclosure. If they wanted to they can seal the drive inside or simply make it very difficult for anyone to open where you even might need to break it open, then again, not many console buyers are technically savvy to even try to fix it themselves, especially kids; but we won't know for sure until November I guess.
@@Fetidaf given that they're selling the disc drive for $80 they likely wouldn't make it easy for someone to open it since they would want you to buy a new one instead. Not to mention that having someone repair it would cost more than $80 anyway. It's strategically priced that way for a reason.
This was a very underwhelming announcement. I had friends hold off on buying a PS5 simply because a “Slim” version would be announced soon and normally they’re cheaper. With the PS4 we had the Pro and Slim launch which gave people who wanted a cheaper model a chance to buy one and then the Pro model gave current PS4 owners an option to upgrade to something better. This is none of those things. The extra 125GB of storage is nice and frankly it should have been 1TB from beginning but we already have the ability to upgrade our storage capacity with an M.2 SSD. This new model brings nothing to the table besides the removable disk drive. Again a nice feature but nothing to go crazy about either. My advice to most is to see if any retailers will discount the older models enough to warrant buying them and to avoid the new ones, especially if you were wanting to go with the digital only option.

Definitely. Minimising the outside structure of the PS5, can only have either no effect or negative effect on the performance. So owning the original is preferable in my opinion.
The PS3 Slim and the PS4 Slim were not called "Slim" by Sony. No Playstation has ever offically been called the "Slim" model. The PS2 Slim was called the "Slim" in some marketing but Slim was not part of the model.
Is this new PS5 Slim more power efficient? Runs cooler when thermals go up? Less prone to hardware failures? Like most other slim versions hope that is the case.
I’m personally done buying discs. I have the ps4 disc version but I’m replacing it with the digital only edition. All the discs are today are installers. Either way you take up the same space on the drive it seems.
A big reason they make slims is not only to stay updated with factory manufacturing processes & most available off-the-shelf parts, but also the logistics of shipping. Make no mistake, shipping millions of original PS5's in those HUGE boxes costs a LOT of money. Sony is DEFINITELY saving a ton of money per unit by shipping significantly smaller boxes. More units in less shipping containers. But yeah this time we're not really getting any savings passed on. Though I guess the much smaller size is worth something in your home lol I always kinda thought the original PS3 Fat to PS3 Slim was underwhelming, a LOT of features were cut out like the full PS2 backwards compatibility, removal of the memory card readers, and it felt a lot cheaper than the (admittedly easy to scratch) original. But then I remembered the original was $$500-600 at launch and the slim was $300 lol That price reduction more than makes up for it. That said I still think the original PS2 to PS2 Slim is the greatest "slim" update ever to a console. It even still looks great to this day, so small.
I don’t own a Ps5 and was specifically waiting for a slim variant. This doesn’t really seem that much slimmer so I’m a bit underwhelmed ngl. Do I buy the slim or the base PS5 in a bundle deal. I can get PS5 with a game and controller for £410.
It’s not that much of a difference just wait for reviews but it might be kinda hard to get a slim version after it’s out and I usually don’t get new devices when released because the first batch always has problems I would rather wait until they improve the slim or maybe make a pro version 😂
If they would of made the digital version $420 (blaze it) instead of $450 i think it would of been much better received. Even if it was $430 it would still be relatively reasonable. As it is now you would be better waiting a little longer and buying the one bundled with the drive.
I have a PS5 with the drive already, but if I did not, I guess I would just pay whatever the cost is because I did not have one. Planning on doing a water cooled and lighting mod to it anyway. The benefits to having a drive that ports in already worked out would be nice, but I am not paying extra for that. Also since I got my about a year an a half ago when they were still rare, I paid more than you would pay for the slim, but not a ridiculous more like some idiots. That I paid for on my 3070s. Lucky you.
Bought the standard disc version for Spiderman 2 a few days before this one was announced. Considering how meticulous and important space management is for me personally. Even the smallest space savings help. I will be returning the one I just got and getting the "new" standard model when it releases next month. Although my reaction to this announcement was a feeling of being underwhelmed and annoyance. Why up charge $50 for the digital version? These things should be getting cheaper. Not going up. Regardless of inflation or other factors, I would expect to see some savings considering how fast and many they've sold of these up until this point.
I’d wait for a teardown. My main complaint with any new consoles is heat/thermal management. They run just as hot as a gaming pc these days, and from that aspect I have to say.. get a pc lol 😂
I think that's a pretty stupid idea. Even if the Slim model's drive is 1TB, that extra space, won't last you a whole lot considering, how large games are nowadays. You'd be getting around 100-150GB extra, compared to the current model, which is about 1-2 extra games installed. And let's not forget, it costs virtually the same ammount of money, as the current model as well. It's cheaper if you get the digital edition, but if you ever decide to buy a disc drive for it, and/or an additional stand, to position the console vertically, it'll cost you more than any disc drive model. My advice is to just keep the current console you already have.

It's not going to have 1TB of usable space. There will be just under a 200GB difference (670GB vs probably 850ish). A 1TB Gen4 NVME can be had for under $100 and with both models I feel it's pretty recommended.
I'm still wondering if Sony will make plates for the older models still or if they will allow us to complain about them making plates that don't work for the original models
people will argue with me but Nintendo had the best "refresh" so far with the Better Battery Redbox switch and OLED Switch no idea what microsoft is gonna do (if they do anything at all) but the bar is set kinda low from sony

Not offering the BR add-on for the original PS5 Digital is a big middile finger for those early adopters. Not sure how many of the 40m PS5s sodle were digital, but im sure its a large #.

It’s not a middle finger. Digital buyers CHOSE from the onset to have a diskless console. There was never any thought that that feature was coming them to begin with so why should this announcement change that? It’s better to create an integrated attachable disk drive than to have a separate drive dangling off to the side connected via usb-c. Less efficient and definitely less elegant
And for the record, this IS a slim model even tho Sony calls it a redesign. This PS5 is 30% smaller than the OG PS5. The PS4 Slim was 30% smaller than it's OG. The PS3 Slim was 33% smaller.
The 50$ price increase hitting the US now has hit the whole world last year. The Disc version in the US still has not increased in price. Be happy about THAT and just deal with it.
I think hindsight has taught us due to the more complex cooling and internals compared the Original PS5, the $50 upcharge for the Digital Version is to somewhat pay for those engineering changes, as well as attempt to profit from the hardware.
First of all, the slim versions that have always released halfway through the console generation have always dropped at a lower price, but not this time. More importantly, previous generations have always had more exclusives, there is still practically no reason to own a PS5, most of its library is PS4 games.
I’ve had PlayStation since 1995. I’ve never had a problem once with the disc drive failing. The new consoles disc drives will be designed to fail so you have to replace it. Just like the PS5 duel edge controller, joysticks in the middle designed to fail so you have to replace them.
Well, the prices of chips ain't going down like before and the inflation is insane. I'm amazed that the current gen consoles aren't more expensive, actually. Freaking phones cost $1000+ and powerful console hardware is much much cheaper.
What a joke Sony has become, not even a price drop. Not to mention increasing the price of PS Plus, which is bad enough. And in America we are in the middle of a recession, and fighting a major immigration problem. How are people affording this?
People really have no idea what they're talking about. Sony has NEVER called any of their consoles "Slim". Just look it up: when they revealed the PS4 Slim in 2016, they said that 'this is the new PS4 model and will be the standard moving forward', which is EXACTLY as with the PS5. It's literally the same thing. The size reduction is similiar to the PS4 Slim as well.
I get your point but imagine a user that owned the ps4 standard base 1st ever model, they never switch to ps4 slim/ps4 pro, now going to buy a ps5. He’d definitely not settle for the 3 year old model. If it runs same internals, and has extra internal storage (an undeniable plus for users that install roughly 5 games at a time) it’s definitely safer. Plus it takes up less space, and honestly the 4 panels give it a sharper feel, it’s all good for me. Manufacturing date should be a factor here as well and how long one could possibly keep it
If the disk drive goes bad it's easy to replace now , before the drive was married to the motherboard so you would have to take the board out of the old drive and solder it into the new drive and pray it works , now you literally just buy a new drive and slap it on , the drive is going to fail eventually since it's mechanical and it happens on every system ever with a disk drive so as far as a user being able to repair a disk issue , this fixes that and I think it's really cool .
here is the question: why would you pay $80 for a disk drive that you have to manually install on the digital edition, instead of just paying for the disk version on the off chance that oyu use it at some point? Also, those "upgrades" you mentioned are not really upgrades. no mass manufacturer is selling 800GB SSDs, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, are what the mass market is going with. So its actually cheaper for them to go with a 1tb drive. USB ports are like $5-$10 value retail. so really what you have is something that has a smailler manufactur cost for more money. THE ONLY reason to pick one of these up is if you don't already have a PS5.
From the owner of ps5 digital edition. I hate that i bought the digital. This although more expensive it would have gave me the option to upgrade and would've saved me money in the long run
In Europe, we've been paying more for the PS5 for more than a year, now it's the turn on the USA... I don't know why there's so much drama about the price. you can't always be privileged.
America's finally getting with the times, the rest of the worlds been paying $50 more for a ps5 for nearly a year now and yet its still only the digital edition thats gone up for use
