Should they change the design of the timer?

agreed this is absolutely a problem, need to fix it by making it first not a dnf as well as getting a better timer design for cubing use

Review the footage, look at the timer one frame before the timer got hit. Then since it usually records at 60 fps you add 1/60th of a second to get the most accurate time.

Imagine getting a malfunctioned timer and the host is like "Awwww, too bad. So sad. DnF"

Imagine you get a world record and it just says “dnf”

The workers at the competitions: “our equipment is trash so we don’t let the person get a redo”

my suggestions: 1) give an extra 2) if there's a video of the solve: 2.1) if the timer can be seen, use the last recorded time, provided that the video is at least 30fps 2.2) if the timer can't be seen, request a frame count

comp organizers should put a folded pice of cardstock right under the batteries in the door so they don’t come loose

I'm surprised that the competition standard for timers looks like a '90s gadget that was built in someone's garage. With cubes so advanced they use maglev, you'd expect timers to be way more advanced too

It's not the Competitor's fault, it's the Designer's fault and they deserve a proper redo ffs.

A solution to this is to have all cubes be smart cubes that hook up to an electronical timer so that way no matter what whenever the cube is solved it sets a time and there's no rough hitting on the equipment.

If they're recorded, can't they go back and watch the footage, and slow it down to the frame before it reset? I used to speed stack and I didn't have this problem with mats but that's the only thing I can think of doing for now other than redesigning the mats

There hasn’t been much of an upgrade to the classic speed stack timers for forever which makes me SO ANGRY and I think they would make a ton of money if the made and upgraded version

Its actually quite simple just change the cell positions from beneath to side ways which will stop it from moving while a hard hit on pads. Or just can upgrade it to permanent rechargeable L-ion cell

In my country the judges use the stopwatch together with the timer in case this happen but last weekend I went to a comp in an other country and the delegate told me to not do this. I feel that's stupid because I don't think there's a rule saying we can't do this.

They need to have some sort of really high fps camera and just use the last shown time before the blackout, and do that for lower rated competitions and then find a better way to redeem the big pros times if it were to happen

It's not always a loose battery, but hitting reset with your thumb when you stop the timer on accident.

The gan halo (although it is expensive) gets rid of this problem great! I feel like other brands should take what gan has done and change to it, the buttons don’t work for a second after a solve (or during) so that can’t delete your time plus it’s charged so batteries can’t fall out!

The easiest solve for this: putting a piece of paper folded a bunch of times

Maybe they should record the timer, and when this happens, they look at the video and see the last number shown Or allow a re-do

either change the design or test all of the timers before hand to make sure they can withstand the pressure

For something like world championships, where there is also the larger timer next to the competitor, they should be able to video record the timer and do a slo-mo replay to get the time before going to zero. For other competitions, allow for self recording over the shoulder to catch the timer maybe.

Simple math, find out when the timers become bad, then try to find a way to fix it or replace them

The way I would stop this from happening is before you solve like while they scramble the cube your solving, replace the battery and make sure everything is going to work before you start solving!

Got an idea for this: Before the cuber starts they test it and see if it needs better equipment or not, THEN they let him start

This is so easy to fix. All you have to do is make the entire top a start/stop and make the buttons on the side and the timer on the other side. This way, you can’t accidentally reset the time. Although this is a good idea, malfunctioning is an entirely different issue

I feel like on of the ways to fix this problem is before the cubing comps they should always check the timers, what i mean by this is by instead of just doing 1 stomp or smth srr forgot what it was called there but they should do it multiple times to make sure that the timers are good.

So couple things, this could be easily fixed by either having a charger, a rechargeable battery that can be replaced or adding replaceable padding inside so the batteries are firmly held in place. This problem has an easy fix but it's the negligence and stupidity of the designers plus the stupidity of the competitions in regards to how they handle this situation where you get such things happening. Honestly in a competition you need good equipment not garbage that can easily malfunction and fail at it's most important job.

lodge a piece of tissue in between the batter and the cover so that it wouldn’t move, it would be a tight fit but something this simple could help it work. I did this to my psp battery as it was loose and kept dislodging every time I play.

personally im pompletely against timers they should do it like game speedruns where its recorded and timed from the first turn till the last to get a 100% accurate time

In the case when there was a big display for showing time they can just use that video and pause at exact moment before coming to rest and use that time
