What can be said about smash that hasnt already? Smash Ultimate is literally one of the biggest games of all time. The only problem with ultimate is nothing can be bigger than ultimate?
In this video we talk about the consequences of being one of the biggest games of our generation.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an upcoming crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, succeeding Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The game follows the series' traditional style of gameplay: controlling one of various characters, players must use differing attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of an arena. It features a wide variety of game modes, including a campaign for a single-player and multiplayer versus modes. Ultimate includes every playable character from previous Super Smash Bros. titles-ranging from Nintendo's mascots to characters from third-party franchises-and several newcomers.
The project plan for a new Super Smash Bros. game was finished in December 2015, during the development of 3DS/Wii U's downloadable content. Series creator and director Masahiro Sakurai returned along with Bandai Namco Studios and Sora, the studios that developed the previous game; the studios' return sped up the preparation process. Sakurai's goal with Ultimate was to include every character from previous games despite the various development and licensing problems this would cause. Nintendo teased Ultimate during a Nintendo Direct presentation in March 2018 and announced it at E3 2018. It is scheduled to be released on December 7, 2018.

76 characters (counting Pokemon Trainer as 3 characters) + 5 DLC characters = 81 characters. If you pair every character in a battle with each other once (excluding dittos), you have 3,240 unique matchups. Now multiply that by the number of total legal stages. That's now many total matchups there will be in Smash Ultimate (for competitive play that is). Good luck studying all of them. And don't get me started on casual play.

Items, Spirits, Custom Moves for Miis (which is actually tournament legal), FS Meter and more. As a competitive casual or something, I'm spoiled with basically everything but the ability to jump on a Goomba.

My problem with the game is that there's all of this, but it's all kinda the same, it's all battles, there are no modes that let you play something more than a normal battle, and that can get kinda old

I know it would be best to add in as many Playable Characters as possible. Even the Assist Trophy Characters that people Wahnted as Playable Characters.

I believe Masahiro Sakurai will find a way to surprise us with the next game, even if we can't think of a way to improve upon Ultimate he will. He's a Game Desinger after all and a fantastic one.

Yeah, but he doesn't know that he's disappointing some of the Fan Bases by making their Characters Assist Trophies.

@@nintendonian7776 I'm sure he dose. It's just that we can't have EVERY character people want to be playable. The game has 70+ chatacters in it. Anybody that is disappointed is ungrateful.

I really liked this video! In my opinion, sakurai made it this big so he didn't have to try and make another. I don't know if we will let he poor man rest though lol I'm so hyped for this game! My main: LUCAS! (Also link and my poor baby pichu)

As a player of Dragon Ball games (where most of the cast have died once or twice - not all games have a story starting with Raditz too), I can't relate to the FGC mindset that there needs to be a story excuse for characters to return. Of course, it would be a shame if they didn't at least have an arcade ending (whether an illustration or video), but with those being largely non-canon and a lack of story in theory meaning that Marvel vs Capcom prior to Infinite had no reason to bring everyone... Not a fan. If there are cuts which I hope doesn't happen in the future it should be based on being unable to renegotiate plans (Snake in Smash 4), being unable to finish the character for the game (Icies in Smash 4) and little else. Sakurai needs a break and I wouldn't want to be in his replacement's shoes but people won't be able to accept a smaller roster and missing modes.

The WiiU game was actually much bigger than this game. You can see why Trophies was cut.

@@yuh6132 consider the development time between Smash Ultimate and Smash for WiiU's DLC. Its very short, probably as short as Melee's. Its surprising they've even got an engaging adventure mode and all returning characters. + Music. Trophies were just 1 look, and you're done. The stickers for Ultimate? You view'm all the time. Sure, it sucks we dont have Collectible Trophies, but I doubt we'd have a big of a game as Ultimate if we still had'm.

Smash Bros Infinite = Infinite Grow... just like cancer... Okay, a bad joke. Got it! I think Smash digs it's own grave with that astronomic amount of characters and stages. The next installment will upset "everyone" in one way or another.

Better to set the bar high and disappoint eventually than leave people begging for a character to come back for decades. We still have some modes and mechanics (also Poke Floats) to worry about like basically every other series so it is nice to be able to recommend a single title for all characters.

@@thelastgogeta Setting the bar high is one thing, blowing it way out of porpotion in comparisonto every other fairly balanced "fighting game" is another. Nintendo sets this series up to failure if they cut characters in the future IMO. People are begging for characters anyway. Since every character has at least a chance to be in smash. No other developer / publisher of a competetive fighter would do something like this... except Nintendo. Their fans are too spoiled in sow ways. The nature of FG are... the rooster keeps getting shuffled. Often you have to learn a new character because your old main is not in this installment.

@@largolagrande Inversely, I think other communities should consider setting the standard higher. I'm not expecting every character in SF or Tekken branded game to reappear but it isn't unreasonable for Kid Kazuya (or that SFV police officer) to be playable for example and just be banned from tournaments and online ranked. More in-check expectations has kept many series being sustainable sales wise despite losses in some things but it doesn't actually result in a more rich game perhaps more rich publishers due to the profit margin. The roster is only one element, ultimately (heh) the most valuable element mechanically and in terms of nostalgia for fans of all kinds but there are many ways to keep people happy like launching with an arcade mode. The shuffling roster can stay but they simply need to feel like they are getting bigger and bigger and not omitting (permanently) neat playstyles at least if it is reasonable to expect them to be included (much less likely for guests or characters which are either more hardware or more Dev time demanding).

​@@thelastgogeta A higher standard over all = more money for development - would be great to see. The reality is.. fighting games are a very niche genre with declining budget. Despite their brands are well known and some kind of pop culture, they are not as profitable as AAA productions. Smash is the exception in a lot of ways because it is "casual game" ("party game / Nintendo game") for a more casual audience. I mean this not in a bad way. For example: Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was a fun experience for casuals but a nightmare for the target audience because of too complex tag mechanics and too many match ups to learn to get better at the game to actually "play it". Casual audiences are not that interested in diverse move sets, a complex and deep battle systems - aka the core of every good and reasonable fighter. They are more interested in "more". More stages, more characters, more modes. Visual things. I'm not saying all of this is bad or unnecessary (I'm interested in all of this as well) but if your development budget is very limited to begin with... because your genre is targeted to a niche audience, something has to suffer. Even smash sacrificed a good adventure mode a few times. The problem with a huge roster is always learning match ups. That's what serious fighting games are all about.. a learning experience. An adventurous journey.

@@largolagrande Sorry for the ramble, typing on a phone isn't ideal. That's a problem that they created for themselves and it leads to a situation where games can only be sustained if tournaments do well and serve as adverts. In the long run, Tekken and SF will probably be fine but it is handicapping themselves if they can only engage more fans who want a new/returning character or two. I have heard of some of the TTT2 problems but think (in my casual opinion) that some rebalancing of tag mechanics would have been enough since characters aren't THAT diverse design wise (it is more uniform than other series). It is very interesting how it was both too difficult for hardcore folks to keep up with but still had plenty of extras for me like Tekken Ball on Wii U. Casual fans who turn on the game for quick match with a friend online or run through arcade every now and again without really learning are the majority of the sales. We can't include everything on Day 1 perhaps but it is in their best interest to try before people write a game off for years like SFV. I don't think a larger roster is the only way to achieve the Smash effect, ARMS is doing rather well (2.1 mil) despite no characters in Smash and no crossover factor. Tekken used to be more of a "party game" just one game ago and could cross that line again with one more DLC mode (Tekken Bowl wasn't it chief) aside from how the customisation already touches on the idea now. The best casual modes provide interesting journeys to learn the game and despite Smash not being consistent on the adventure mode - Smash Run in the last game and Spirits should be plenty. The latter is actually similar to some challenges that SFV offers in fact just without any microtransactions and with the option to make more stuff for yourself.
