The NBA has a new basketball and it’s airless, but it could break the NBA. #nba
This is the NBA’s new basketball and it’s airless which means you never have to pump it cause it’s full of holes, but players have a history with ball changes not going so well, causing airballs, anger, and bleeding so what’s the big deal about this new futuristic looking basketball that looks like it can’t be used outdoors and why does the NBA want to risk all that again? We’re going to find out because this basketball might break the NBA and how we play basketball forever. The answer might surprise you since the NBA’s basketball has changed a lot through the years, from a a soccer ball in 1881 to the full grain leather Spalding basketball in 1983. Most recently the NBA changed the ball in 2021 and in the beginning of the season, players were missing shots badly…
The basketball stayed the same material. When the NBA last changed materials, there was an even worse reaction but let’s understand what this new basketball is made of because these new ones are going to be 3D printed out of an elastomeric polymer, basically something similar in molecular structure to natural rubbers. The ball still has the 8 panels like a traditional basketball, including seams, but oh yeah, it has hexagonal holes.
The biggest challenge was for it to bounce similar to other basketballs. The way current basketballs work, when a basketball makes contract with the ground, it compresses which pushes against the air inside the ball. The air pushes back against the ground depending on the level of air pressure and the ball bounces back up.
But without air pressure, these new basketballs are more like those small bouncy balls, when the ball hits the ground, the polymer chains in rubber uncoil and straighten kind of like a spring which causes the ball to bounce back up. Wilson took several years to find the right material that gives a consistent bounce similar to current basketballs. The main advantage of this type of basketball is that you don’t have to worry about a basketball deflating or popping.
According to Wilson, they have rigorously tested the basketball, including swinging at the ball with a baseball bat, ensuring that the basketball is durable, but they are hoping to avoid the mistakes that happened 17 years ago. The last time the NBA made a change so drastic using science was in 2006. The NBA changed from leather to microfiber composite and it broke the NBA. They also stated that these new basketballs would remove the break in period a basketball needs, but just 1 month into the season, players already had some things to say like Shaq who said “it feels like one of those cheap balls you buy at the store” and that whoever did this needs to be fired. MVP Steve Nash said “it tears his fingers apart”. LeBron rival Deshawn Stevenson said “I HATE IT”.
NBA’s best shooter at the time Ray Allen said “I have to constantly put lotion all over my hands because my fingers are cracking and it’s causing splits on my fingertips”. Wait, from a basketball?And he wasn’t the only one. Jason Terry showed reporters what looked like paper cuts on their fingers, Dirk said it made his hands bleed. Eddy Curry said it stuck to his middle finger.
Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, wasn’t convinced by the NBA saying the ball was performing extraordinarily well and commissioned physicists from the University of Texas to test the ball and what he found proved the NBA was lying. The Cross Traxxion ball retained more frictive dirt and was slippier when it absorbed any moisture like sweat, but perhaps the worst of it all, they found the ball bounced 5-8% less than the old one, and was 30% more erratic in how it bounced.
Certain shot release angles means different velocities of the ball on it’s descent, essentially the slower a ball hits the rim, the softer the touch. Think those Nikola Jokic floaters and hooks shots around the rim. But if these new balls will have different velocities in the air due to smaller surface area and less air resistance, then players will also have to modify their shots to get that same soft touch.
Which leads to my third issue, dirt and sweat can get deposited inside the basketball and change the play of the ball over time. It could make air flow through the ball a bit different, the ball a bit more lopsided even the slightest because of that lattice structure with holes, related to my 4th issue, how will the elastic polymers lattice pattern impact grip? With less surface area, less contact points for your fingers, and in an NBA game, every small percentage plays a role. I mean we’ve seen players not be able to pick up the ball ****************************and that could get worse. Does this mean we’re going to see more turnovers?

I'm not sure about the airflow decreasing resistance...air flowing into the ball and past the holes on the sides perpendicular to the direction of travel could have all kinds of weird effects. decision go airless is not a bad idea if they can calibrate ball's responses properly (weight, bounce, elasticity to touch etc). but i think it should be better with without the holes, because it changes the aerodynamics drastically and the feeling will be completely different, thus it won't be a nice transition curve from old to new.
@1WithTheDark

Change the aerodynamics? If the ball is rotating the holes are far to small to make it displace the ball. That's like saying you will crash on a highway if you roll your window down lol

@@1WithTheDark i assumed that it will also be produced to be sold to the consumers, after it's accepted and becomes the new standard ball in NBA. And people will wanna use it outside, too. And there is wind outside, holes aren't small enough not to be affected by the wind. To be honest, what they use in league doesn't matter to me, what my future ball looks like matters to me. If this is strictly gonna be used in NBA matches, and nowhere else, and they won't try to implement this design to the products which will be sold to customers, then i don't care, they can use whatever they like :)

@@1WithTheDark On an object as small and light as a basketball, small changes in aerodynamics like that can have very noticeable effects on how it behaves in the air. The thing that comes to my mind is how the holes would interact with the Magnus effect (lifting force generated on solid spinning objects in air or liquids) when the ball is thrown. I'm no expert by any means, but my assumption is that the holes might reduce the Magnus effect and cause the ball not to 'float' as much as a solid one when thrown.

I disagree, for two reasons: 1) It's not like they're actually using this yet. It's a prototype. It's still in development. It's quite likely that if they can get feedback from actual players who have actually played with it, they can continue to improve it. 2) "Works" is a complicated concept. It sounds like the goal is, and has been for some time, to replace a mass-produced item that currently uses leather, which is unsustainable, and can sometimes pop, which could be dangerous. "Because this is the way it's always been done," is NEVER a good reason to not look for ways to improve it.

Yes, because auto racing from 1910 is way more exciting and safer than it is today. While we're at it, we should still use soccer balls and an actual basket. Let's also not dribble the ball, because in the early days of basketball, once a player got the ball, they had to stay in that spot, until they passed it to someone else. You should read the rules of early basketball, and you'll be grateful the sport changed over time. I get what you're saying. Not all change is for the better. And if something is going to be changed, it should benefit the sport more than hinders it, but change by itself is not a bad thing.

When you shoot, the fingertips contact the surface of the ball to impart spin. If the surface has big discontinuities in it, then you will get different spin. I am just waiting for a player who is reaching for a steal a bit late to jam his finger into the ball and get it stuck. I expect injuries, lower shooting percentages, and more turnovers.

Of course it's not going to be the same. It's going to move through the air differently, it's going to be less bouncy, it's going to be more stiff, and it's going to feel different in the hands. If players don't like it in the off season, then they need to cancel it before the regular season.

The explanation why the ball bounces is wrong. Air pressure pushes equally against all inside surfaces of the ball, creating a round shape. When a ball is hits to the ground, the energy put into the throw/fall deforms the round shape to a flattend shape. The more flat shape causes a bigger surface for the perssure to act in vertical direction. Because there is an imbalance, the ball wants to return to it's original round shape and springs up because of this.

I doubt any Wilson employees will see this, but just in case...I do have a suggestion. Basically what is shown; the ball does not bounce enough. There are two different downsides of a ball that bounces less in the NBA. 1st the players will dislike it. 2nd and to the bean counters far more important; if it bounces less dynamically that makes the entire game LESS dynamic and LESS entertaining for the audience who pays to see a good game in person or watches it at home or in a bar. The NBA is competing with all other sports for percentage of Sports Fan Viewership; a loss of one half percent of NBA viewers in one year is a disaster long term potentially...because the next generation, the teenagers that watch with their parents, would not get NBA viewing as their growing up experience. Thus a tiny change can compound and become a large change over decades. My point is that making the act of watching NBA Games less satisfying will lose some percentage of your audience, as those people switch to another sport. So? My suggestion is to scrap the idea of making these new balls out of only ONE material. Instead have the current material still on the outside, still 3D Printed. The inside would be an Unknown to me Plastic; injection molded to have the exact same pattern overall. But this material MUST be more springy to make the combination of the two materials more closely match the Bounce Response of what has worked for decades. The interface of the two materials cannot be only a glue/chemistry bond; those are guaranteed to fail with the abuse the ball takes + the individual sections being so small...means edge bonding will fail a tiny bit invisibly, but that failure becomes exponential from all the bounces = a dead ball. So the two materials should have some sort of chemical bond, but IMO more important is to have a tong and grove or slot system so they are also bonded with woodworking type mechanical bond. Think as an example; three upside down triangles each a 32nd of an inch for the largest part, decreasing as they go 'down' and are all Great Circles around the Ball or an artistic curve chosen for art or for function too (Function is how well the players like the ball) All three of those would be on the 3D Printed Portion, then the Injection Process fills them in to make the mechanical and chemical bond between the two materials. This could not be done as described without doing half's of the ball in full, then gluing them together, BUT that glue point would be a critical failure point that 3D Printing is supposed to eliminate probably. Okay so if someone understands the RESULT or end product of what I described, then they can be clever and figure out a different manner than I described to get a GOOD mechanical bond between two dissimilar very flexible materials that get abused by strong athletes. If Wilson Employees do see this and use any of my ideas to make a good ball? This would amuse me because I do not watch Basketball. Ha ha!
@denalozecon9074
@denalozecon9074 10 месяцев назад
The outside material must be something that will not cause the players to bleed. But the second interior material could be a very hard + springy plastic. Or something I thought of while walking around with a cigarette; the Veritasium video about the NASA Memory Metal Lunar/Mars Rover Tires. I think that Memory Metal would result in a Basketball that is MORE bouncy than any Basketball ever + if you had NASA helping you make a better ball that has marketing possibility. I really doubt there is any plastic even close to the awesome specs of NASA's Memory Metal.

With the Memory Metal as the primary grid frame; the ball might be two or three times the weight and thus run into NBA Rules for the Ball weight and size. But the NBA could change the rules IF the new ball is more bouncy than any ball before, and the players are tall athletes so they are strong...they would not mind extra ball weight if the game becomes more fun and dynamic to play.

Gotta be honest, I think this change is necessary. Basketball is the most solved sport currently out there with scores describing only marginal differences between athletes much of the time. Unless we see a marked change which forces the athletes to compete in new a creative ways, the sport will eventually devolve into pure formula the way that baseball has. And if we are being honest with ourselves, Baseball isn't nearly as popular or highly grossing today largely in part because it has lost all sense of tension.

Things like this just get me wondering who would back this finically? The current ball works fine right? Are there any problems? At all? Where’s the need guys, come on.

the nba is just tired of doing championships and just wanna end it already, they are finding secret ways to make players quit the nba and why do they want to even do that? Well because "their sick and tired of it, spending millions of money every year just for games to be played till the championship" I saw it in one article

Jumbo-sized "Wiffle" ball. This will definitely introduce the Magnus effect to the NBA. The closest thing to a solution, is to use this as a core, covering it with a more traditional exterior material.

The Wilson ball is exactly the same. The NBA ball is not meant to be used outside. The softness is the key and the grip.v the bounce is easy to replicate. That 2006 ball was a POS

The fact that these guys are TRYING to make it NBA ready, doesnt make it look any better. Ik not every Basketball is automatically NBA ready but as to what weve seen so far, its ok on paper but in reality, even with the best ball handlers, I dont think itll stick like how theyre expecting...

Magnus Effect gets screwed up by this wiffle ball design. The Magnus Effect is what helps 'drop' the ball in, changing the parabola of travel. There will be more 'fire one across the bow' air balls and rim shots. Points for coolness and creativity; minus points for lack of practical knowledge of physics.
