@@RSBurgener LOL, these are one of the most useful models. 10 of these + HH era weapons pack, and you instantly can field whatever new primaris squad GW makes for peanuts. I made 10 of the missile launcher dudes and extra 10 hellblasters for 1/3 of the new minis cost...
as a daemons player, my discount boxes are either all khorne or at least 1/2 units that are AoS only (except the start collecting boxes, which are no longer produced or sold by GW)
I really enjoy selling all the vehicles, terminators, and leaders. and getting 100% free kill teams. Orks, Vothann, Custodes, Deathguard. Freehammer is possible :D
12:40 Necron Immortals being in almost every single box set since 2019 made me think there's a warehouse somewhere that is just wall-to-wall Immortals sprues
@@Atiredproblem Hey, at least your combat patrol was still a legally playable force when it was released, unlike the poor Death Guard combat patrol... I swear, a big part of the reason why GW created the whole 'Combat Patrol' game system was because of how badly they fethed up the DG combat patrol - you couldn't even legally play it in 40k!! 30 Poxwalkers, but the unit sized maxed at 20... Oh, but you need 1 'Bubonic Astartes' keyword unit for every Poxwalker unit you take? Too bad you got 7 Plague Marines in the box, so 10 of those Poxwalkers were just wasted sprues 😞
I feel like Indomitus taught GW the wrong lesson. They “oh people LOVE Big Boxes” When in reality it’s just “We like models at a relatively reasonable price “
Indeed. For a new player there is nothing worse for an "intro box" to be overly bloated, and as a old player I hate having to deal with a whole box of monopose stuff missing all the gear I need. GW need to go back to smaller, cheaper boxes full of ACTUAL real minies and not monopose stuff.
I have to say I'm the same way. I can paint at my job, so I can get a lot done. I don't have a pile of shame, just models I was forced to buy ahead of time to save money! 😅
My rule of thumb is everything I want in the box has to be cheaper than only buying the parts i want from it separately. Its not a discount if i get a bunch of stuff i dont like and it was more expensive than just buying the bits i like.
@@darko-man8549 yeah that was my thought, when I started my guard army I bought a start collecting guard and a start collecting scions and that got me a load of scions a Taurox prime Cadians and a leman russ for 120 pounds where as the guard box is 20 quid less and a whole lot worse
@@darko-man8549it’s honestly disgusting the blood angels combat patrol is literally a start collecting box the space marine combat patrol has like 5$ savings and its literally cheaper to buy the start collecting box with space marines and nids and then buy a librarian in terminator armor
if they did seasonal sales then sales during non promotional months would absolutely tank, why buy something when you can get it cheaper, especially with something as overpriced as GW products
maybe for stuff that doesn't sell, but otherwise a horrible idea. Imagine your faction has a sale... a few days after you loaded up on plastic. It would lead to stuff going out of sale mega quick, and the average customer feeling like they got screwed. not being able to benefit from sale so they pay "suckers price"
Don’t see it as a pile of shame. Very least if it sits in your cupboard for years and is a specialty box you’ll make your money back or more selling it on eBay. Can always use parts in boxes or start weird projects. It’s only when you consider it junk that it becomes a pile of shame, if not it’s a pile of possibilities.
God prices are getting so insane that at some point I hope everyone just throws in the towel. We won’t though, we are to addicted. But it’s a nice dream that we all stop and GW is forced to lower their prices.
So based on the comment section it’s not just GW to blame. If you’re willing to buy multiple discount boxes but only interested in painting two units from the box before you buy another one helps contribute to GW selling at any price point. I mean if the customer is willing to buy a product they don’t intend to use only to buy more in the future who’s really to blame.
There’s always 3 things in a discount box. 1 thing that you absolutely need and want, and is probably THE reason why you’ll buy the box. 1 thing that you want to give a go, build and paint, and perhaps even play and enjoy. 1 thing that you will have almost zero interest in and most likely have no chance of getting out of the sprues. So most of us will see a discount box as “we’ll get a slight discount on 1 and 2, and get 3 for nothing”.
@@blakearius tzaangors are the worst. I hated painting them, I hate the way they look and I even hate fighting them in Spacemarines 2. My favourite Tzeentch models are the screamers. I’ve got 15 of them.
thats not true anymore. theres quite a few boxes that have 3 things i have zero interest in. like the new dark angels box... vs the old one which at least got you a redemptor.
Pretty much the dg cp Needed everything in there Except the poxwalkers ☠️ You know The thirty fucking poxwalkers (I’ve only even built two cause I have so much more important stuff to work on)
It's even worst than that. They raise the price, reduce the discount AND reduce the content in each kit. Elite marine is now 3 man unit. Regular guard equivalent unit is now 10, and their elite is now 5? This is ridiculous.
My issue with them as a returning player is that many of the units included are just simply not the ones you want to form the core of your army. Plus the number of points and discounts are wildly inconsistent from army to army. For example, look at the points and discount difference between Custodes and Necrons!!
A significant problem is just the ratio of price to the amount of stuff actually included in the box, especially when weighed against how much plastic is required to play the game. Another thing to note is the typical inclusion of a random unit which is generally undesired. In addition, short supply, particularly of the more desired boxes are incredibly frustrating as FOMO causes many to miss out.
have gotten a fair amount of the limited time boxes for my pile of Potential, and i got so much that i am at a point where when they come out with more i can say, nahh i don't need that already got that here in this big box.
I just started this hobby earlier this year. My biggest fomo has been for box sets and edition launch boxes that contain bespoke minis and often sell for 2x msrp or more on ebay (dark imperium, indomitus, etc). As for other boxes, i bought the black templar army box, alaric champions, and veterans of the long war on ebay for less than msrp, so i realized that it’s usually better not to rush to get the battleforce boxes on launch. Another thing: since there are so many big box sets out there that come with additional value: upgrades sprues, codexes, rules books, i feel like i am wasting money if i buy a stand alone kit, like who would ever buy legionnaires or primaris crusade squad when you can just get the combat patrol and get so much more?
I only buy from eBay, get everything for about 40-60% off rrp. Ofc it means you have to be patient and can’t get the stuff you want when you want it, or build the perfect list easily, but it’s far more “affordable”
There's no point even thinking about these because if they're any good you're not getting one unless you get up early and get lucky in the first 60 seconds they go on sale. Hey would it be financially irresponsible to spend the money right now but maybe next month you'd have saved up enough to justify it? To happily hand over the cost of a used PS4 plus some games for like 15 dollars worth of plastic? Absolutely forbidden. Its not enough to give them a lot of money, GW demands you do it exactly when they want you to and not a second later.
FOMO is the worst part of it. Basically a tactic to create an artificial sense of urgency to spend money, potentially on units you wouldn't really have wanted otherwise. I'd rather GW just made some actually decent battleforces to start or bulk out an army with, that stay in print the whole edition.
Im hoping to buy the sisters/arbites box, but need to wait for payday. Because i don't know if I'll get one, my mentality is take it or leave it, so much so, might not even get one after payday
Got back into Warhammer since 4th edition. Space marine vs dark eldar starter set. Picked myself up 1500 points of guard and 1500 points of necrons for my little brother to do hobbying with him and bring into the grim dark future. Now signed up for hachette partworks combat patrol today. My other older brother got back into tau and I now am considering hivestorm as well. I am definitely jumping in the deep end.
I find versus boxes to be a good opportunity to try out a new army. I don't just like Space Marines, I like Tyranids and Necrons and Orks and World Eaters and, and, and,
These are not 'discount sets' they are 'normal price' sets. It's the standalone releases that are marked UP. Anyone who buys brand new standalone boxes from GW is a mug.
Have never regretted a 40k purchase, but my AOS armies are definitely feeling like wasted purchases. I love the models, but my Seraphon army box from the previous edition has been rotting for quite some time. Felt like even more of a slap in the face when the Christmas box was just so much better imo. Especially now that half the value of the army box was in the paper included. Hopefully, my Skaventide box isn't destined for the same fate.
I'm glad they stopped doing VS boxsets, however they've now added the codexes into the boxes instead, having the model/models be early access is one thing, but the rules is approaching what video game publishers do with early access and preorder bonuses.
Yep, can't wait to see them crushing by. For now only the lack of 3d printers in homes just do it, but hope in future there will be better and more efficient 3d printers so people will buy it from other independed or small companies, instead from GW (most people don't have a additional room to print there, so we need to wait for safe and efficient 3d printers still)
STLs are not the future, they are a separate hobby in itself. If you think they are you don't know GWs customer demographics. The niche that will print knockoffs was never GWs main income, or even a dent in their sales.
@@Klierowskiyou people wanna take down gw so badly that you can't fathom if they make no money, there's no game. But 3d printing doesn't impact anything, people don't want resin, it's shit and breaks
I would agree... if not for the fact that I HATE the brittle printed resine. Even with perfect printing that doesn't show any lines, the material is still garbage and totally unusable for most kitbashing and conversions.
The main complaint I have is that most discount boxes are mostly just 1 good unit, 1 new unit and the rest is either meh or bad. Its also alot worse for certain armies, Sisters combat patrol is awful and the poor GSC combat patrol was gutted.
If they want to continue to rely on these things ok I guess, but I'm so tired of new stuff being locked behind a $230 box, and if you don't want it or can't afford it, then good luck peasant you can wait
This. That's why I call these boxes "paywall boxes", because they use them as a way to force you to pay 230 bucks just to get access to that one new unit you really want.
It all depends on if you actually want it or not. The only non-launch box I was involved in was splitting Hexfire with a friend, and that was worth it to get started in my thousand sons. By the time of the thousand sons fomo Christmas box it made no sense because Magnus was such a huge piece of it and I had already acquired him secondhand. If Christmas brings me a chaos knight battle force I’m pulling the trigger. If not, no biggie I’ll wait for other deals.
I remember Blood of the Phoenix boxset that included new Drazzar, Jain Zar, Banshees and Incubi that I all wanted because I play both factions, but the rest was undesirables and very limited discount, so wasn't worth it
Problem with a lot of these Battleforce boxes is the overlap with the Combat Patrol, too many of a single unit, or just being really weird like the Ork box. That and the availability of course.
One good thing about many of the better box sets is that you can recoup your costs by selling them if you change your mind. This is less true for boxes with lower discounts, or where much of the discount is tied up in an out of date codex/cards.
I usesd such a box every time I started a new army. Foe that I got all Deamon Primarchs with some decent units in it as a start. Adding a combat patrol and nearly good to go for an army. I would not recommend it if you already have some or most units in it.
Was it? A Prime Tiranid that can't lead anything. A Neurotyran and his Neuroloids that GW couldn't be bothered to give stats to. A very "divisive" screamer killer (read: awful looking and redudant as the base carnifex already does it perfectly fine). Some Von Bloat Leapers that serve literally no purposes. A bunch of Termagants.... without their new weapon options (yaknow, on the edition that decided to make every weapons free and thus mendatory). Some Neurogants, aka "who asked for this?" Bargaunts, aka "who asked for this too?" and the big Psychophage that serves no purpose. The new tyranid release was full of garbage nobody asked for just for the sake of "releasing new stuff" when focusing on actual stuff that was needed (like a new sharper warrior kit with wing options and new Gargoyls kit with a melee varian).
And in most box sets there's uncompetitive chaff. I got Leviathan (arguably the best one ever released) and even that one is full of units that you'd struggle to find in any competitive lists (speaking from the 'Nids side, but likely for SM too).
@@AAw3s0m3 "...in a competitive list..." - found your problem right there. One of my longest running, and growing, problems with the 40k community is the is extremely high prevalence of "win-at-all-costs" attitudes and "rules lawyers" (relative to other GW systems). 40k has never been a competitive game and it will likely never be a competitive game because the majority of people who play it aren't tournament players. To me, the community Fantasy tended to cultivate, and even cultivates now, to some degree, thanks to TOW, is one centered around the idea of "gentlemen games" - basically, just running games to make sure everyone has fun. This usually means bending, breaking, or making up rules that are mutually agreed upon. Enlightenment is realizing that adhering to the great wheel of balancing means eventually being crushed by it. Far better to play with what you want and negotiate with others amiably so you can have more fun doing that on an even playing field.
@@jakub_paints6775 well when I say competitive what I mean is more along the lines of "winning games even casually" rather than "hyperoptimised build with a shelf life of 3 months."
I'm scared of FOMO and the coming Christmas boxes. Given my faction has a new codex early next year, we might be up. Can't but fear it'll be dodgy, old stuff nobody wants. They can be good - anyone remember Blood of the Phoenix?
the blood angels army set created a pile of shame for me. I don't even play blood angels (though they would have been pretty high on my list) so part of that pile is getting sold off. still. feels weird. I will take quite a while to even get started with the models I'll keep.
I think GW is abundantly aware their retail pricing is over-the-top, so they put a 25-30% discount box alongside major retailer discounts between 10-20% to bring the price down to something a sane person might pay for.
Wasn't massively bothered by the new BA box but I knew I'd want the dex soon, Lem and Astorath at some point and then at that point it seemed daft not to pick it up for 120, an extra 45 quid for 10 jump, 0 assault and a brutalis along with all the upgrade sprues
The Spearhead Task Force is an example of a discount box that has some big downsides for me, I've been looking at ways of building up a jump pack Raven Guard list and I have absolutely no interest in the bikes or ATVs, which leaves half the box as just wasted models and ruins the discount for me
I have 2 glaring issues with these box sets. First, they tend to pigeonhole people into playing the army a certain way because even if you have expendable income you dont care about you are going to want to use everything you buy. Very few have had such massive discounts that you could completely omit a unit's normal price and still be coming out equal or ahead. Second, they of course dont exist for long. Getting into a necron army back in 9th was super easy but doing it now is kinda pricy for instance. Third bonus, though more of a nitpick than a real problem. Some armies get insane value boxes, others get jokesets.
I stopped buying battleforces mostly because they are releasing only one new model for factions I like. I am not paying more for stuff I already have and 1 new model. The only ones that were kind of worth it are the Daemon primarch ones because primarch was like $120 by themselves.
The biggest problem with them... The online sellers who treat them like they limited edition collectors item, and try to sell them for more the the individual models would go for
I call them "FOMO" boxes... You can also call them "TRAP" boxes since often you end up with a bigger grey pile of shame or starting a new army you initially didn't want to... Still really expensive and most of the times some minis inside don't interest you or you already have them or they are just old ugly models...
As a beginner I have to say this hobby would have been unattainable for me without the combat patrol boxes. I got the astra combat patrol and just with some extra purchases I was able to get a 500 point army (not a lot but people will start teaching you at that point range)
Let’s see so far this year we have had 2 chaos 3 imperial agents 1 ork 1 genestealer 1 sister of battle not to mention the old world battalion box sets Horus heresy battle group sets blood angel deathwing and kroot starter sets and we haven’t even reached October yet
And even when the box is full of 100% useful stuff, like the Kroot box, the value is totally tanked by the presence of the "paper tax" (codex and cards) that you don't want in dups (and often just don't want at all) and a couple of characters that are grossly overpriced.
The problem is they’re hard to come by and are a limited time item. Wish they would be on shelves much longer so people actually get a chance to get their hands on some. GW needs to cut out doing limited inventory and time items
I feel I've had some great deals with most of mine, Hexfire and Wrath of the Soul Forge King being the standouts. I got into The Hobby with Indomitus and became a big fan of Necrons (4000 pts now). I ended up giving the Space Marine side to a friend who couldn't afford to get started. Hexfire for Grey Knights (my favorite Loyalist Faction) and I also Love Thousand Sons, so that was a super win for me. Adding to my Pile of Shame was getting the Horus Heresy Age of Darkness boxset, which, when I originally bought it, was heavily discounted (3000 pt army right there). Everything since then hasn't tempted me, others here have explained why. I would like another Battleforce box set for Grey Knights or some of the more pricier Necron models.
I used to build and paint old military models when i was a kid many moons ago. Recently got into warhammer lore after playing the warhammer rts games for years. I expressed an interest in maybe getting some warhammer models to build and paint to the wife. She encouraged me to do it, a decision she may regret lol. Now i just need to find what i want. Dark Crusade was my favorite 40k rts and Necron is my favorite faction, especially after learning their lore. So now im on a search for best bang for the buck and ability to get all the units i want. Hell, i may even search out a group to play tabletop.
I rarely buy anything but discount boxes, at least for the two Warhammer games. All the other games I play have decent enough prices that I can buy them without cringing at the number of work hours I just shelled out. I believe the last time I bought an individual 40k kit was in April, I bought a Primaris Asmodai kit because I was visiting a game store in Japan and I didn't want to walk out without buying anything.
my biggest issue with them is its the sh1t sandwich principal, something good with a load of crap in the middle, namely an excuse to dump stock they cant sell normally, a lot of minature companies offer a build your own bundle type of deal where you can buy what you want rather than the GW principal of take what your given
I think gw should make a few more basic "get started" type sets, perhaps with simpler miniatures, more basic units that could come in at a cheaper price point - let some people dip their toe in the hobby, while giving old grognards "army builder" models A budget range, with mono pose miniatures if you will. Current prices are getting out of hand and it would be good to have a budget range.
I honestly like the discount boxes. I bought two, resold the bits and bobs I didn't like, and ended up paying for less than one discount box with a good number of models. My main issues are that it's poorly communicated why a new player should spend the extra cash on a discount box. And, that whoever is in charge of balancing the boxes against each other are doing a terrible job.
"The next editions set" an impulsor with eradicators running from a larger adeptus mechanicus force so that army can get their hands on some serious plastic
Box breaking is a far better from the boxes. It was a combo of heresy getting box broken and the legends debacle is how I built my heresy army. The same goes for the SA as I kind of did not want more command or leman russ tanks and per dollar it was just cheaper than getting the basic force this way . As you can get that one unit you want from the box instead trying to sell the rest to friends and people you vaguely know. When they had Reviers in every box is how I started playing Kill team again
I just sold 3 of my battle boxes I collected the last 18 months. Got back my money at least anyway as they was just gathering dust as been manic busy year with life stuff guys year. I’ll prob stay off buying anymore warhammer until next year and try finish off more of what’s in pile of shame as you say 😅
The thing Im incredibly confused by is I recently was searching for a battleforce set that I last saw in 2022 or 2021 and then never again appearing in any other retailer shop. Are these coming back this year or what's the deal with battleforce boxes?
They only come out in year they released and that's it. Then they go on ebay or other sites for double the price because they are out of production. I am talking about Christmas battleforces and non edition releases.
I wouldn't recommend buying any GK stuff before their codex. I fully expect them to finally get their range update with the new primaris scale. Their whole range is only 2 kits so that shouldn't be too hard for GW to pull off.
@Pers0n97 agreed. I'm returning after playing 3rd and 4th. Gk is the only thing that's really caught my eye, I know they're slated for spring 25 but a Xmas release would be a nice surprise.
Wouldn’t put it past GW putting a GK box out then completely gutting it 2-3 months later for the codex updates. Don’t know how many people would buy though
