To find a unique voice on so ubiquitous an instrument as the acoustic guitar is quite an achievement: to do so within a centuries old idiom where the instrument has no real history is truly remarkable. Tony McManus has come to be recognized throughout the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic Music. From early childhood his twin obsessions of traditional music and acoustic guitar have worked together to produce a startlingly original approach to this ancient art. In Tony's hands the complex ornamentation normally associated with fiddles and pipes are accurately transferred to guitar in a way that preserves the integrity and emotional impact of the music.

So wonderful how he shares his learning experience with self-deprecation and devastating virtuosity. I just love, love, love his PRS guitar. Not a cheap ride but how magical it sounds in his hands.

What a fantastic lesson. So many years of obvious hours and hours of practice condensed in to one 11 minute video. This not only goes for this style of music but everything else in the industry. reading between the lines there is an exceptional amount of knowledge this humble man is actually telling you that you can expand in to other regions of music. I love it. What a lesson.

Great tips. I first saw this a few months ago, introduced to DADGAD at that time too. Since then My skill level has improved a lot. I have even come up with some original melodies I hope to share soon. For any other new guitar players; Highly recommend listening to his advice.

that ornamentation is very cool and unique to that style. would be helpful to see a video/lesson on how to create that ornamentation. sounded very cool with the flat pick too. beautiful playing and guitar. great lesson.

Thank you for your musical insights-additionally, it's fun to approach a transcription after you have fixed on your own to compare ideas regarding accompanying chord and rhythm progressions, as well as the influence of fingering on slurs and other ornaments.

Really great lesson. Learn the melody first. Then add the embellishments around that. As opposed to memorizing a tab. Great playing.

well, that's the problem with excellent guitarists like Mr.McManus: they make it look simple, we nearly understand what they explain, but indeed , it is years of practice to barely approach their pplaying level. Anyway, it is so informative, thank you very much for this lesson !

Case in point...I was born in Ireland, raised listening to jigs and reels all my life...I can write music and compose a good song at the drop of a hat ..can I back or play jigs or reels .no way.. as Tony said it's all in your head... So don't be discouraged if you cannot play this stuff.

Thank you loverly clip. May I ask How do you manage to keep your right-hand fingernails from wearing or splitting? I have tried heavy-duty nail polishes etc to no avail? I play acoustic and electric contemporary music and some folk and incorporating playing a little mandolin and banjo depending on the material of choice but end up at times doing dreadful things to my nails. I don't like flat picks particularly but sometimes it is a necessity, I can't stand and won't wear thumb picks or finger picks even for the banjo. I like to physically feel what I play. Any suggestions (constructive) would be welcome

Christopher Clarke ~~~It’s a good idea to use a polish. I’ve had to take meds since I was 8 and they have destroyed my bones and nails. So now I’m on a 600mg per day vit D with calcium plus if you eat eggs,salmon,oatmeal and any kind Of beans your making them strong from the inside!! Hope it helps ya keep on playin

@@richardsmith5477 Mmm that could be problematic for some food items as I am vegan (lol). the Vit D or oatmeal beans & lentils are no issue it is what I usually consume (almost anything plant-based) I used a heavy-duty American made nail polish but to no avail, I guess the search will continue for solutions. mcmanustony it’s probably the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen, this man must have been a genius when he decided to put little birds in the fretboard... as an Irish American boy, have often found myself longing for a shore I’ve never seen and to play the music of my long-lost country, making music with the very birds that sing songs I’ve never heard.

Tony would not original Celtic be in 432 Hz? Give it that haunting sound compared to the brightness of 440? Have you tried 432 for comparison?

Why would it be in 432Hz? Despite what you think A=432 is not some mystical frequency, tuning has varied from A=398Hz to A=485Hz in the last 400 years, during the Celtic revival 440 was already the standard.
