Discover the natural world like never before: • The Secret World of th...
Jumping spiders are incredibly smart. So smart that I'd say you might even be able to make friends with one! I get requests all the time to show how I work with spiders safely, and handle them in a way that keeps both me and them calm and safe. In this video I'll walk you through the process of making friends with a jumping spider from start to finish!
Subscribe: / mywildbackyard
Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

Same here. Spiders can make me freak out and jump even when lying down! 😂 However the jumping spiders I don't mind living with due to their being so tiny. They seem cute and curious. My daughter experienced 1 wanting to battle with her marking its territory in our home. We were anxious that it not be eaten by other spiders.

That's what sets them apart from most arthropods as a pet honestly. Arthropods just tend to stick around in one spot, meanwhile jumpers and wolf spiders actively walk around even during broad daylight. I'm a firm believer in insect and animal intelligence and I think jumping spiders specifically walk around sometimes just to have fun. Can't be all instinctual.

Crossover episode! 🥳 Great stuff, Spencer and Jack! I loved seeing more footage of adorable jumping spiders, not to mention the wonderful advocacy. 😊 Wasn't sure if this was the case, but it seemed like the second spider had something going with her left pedipalp. They look inquisitively at the world around them, they think, they plot, they plan and execute plans to catch and capture their prey. I actually had one on my bed last night and I told him: listen bud, your absolutely adorable, but you can’t sleep here

I think one of the most important things to convince humans of is that a creature is aware of them as another creature. Cuteness helps us calm down, but there's a lot to be said for the way our brains are wired for transpositional thinking and empathy, both as social animals and as hunters and foragers.

Jumping spiders are awesome, I used to have one that would come up on my table in my back yard, I decided to feed it a fly that had been bugging me, he/she happily jumped on the fly and took off, the next day, I see the same spider crawling across the table, it came and waited so I got up got a fly and fed it again. For two weeks this went on, and the more days passed the more it would stay and eat rather than run off, after the fourth week, I didn’t see it anymore and assumed it had passed or moved on… but the intelligence that tiny little spider showed was pretty amazing and what brought me to this video

I remember when I was the Wasatch Reptile Expo there was a jumping spider vendor. One of her spiders was just hanging out on her fingertip watching the crowd of humans, enjoying itself. She needed her hand free to process a transaction so you know what she did? She set the spider on top of container with a tarantula so it could say hi. It crawled around the outside and checked it out then decided maybe it would go walk on the table. She put her hand under it like "uh-uh" and it backed up and stayed obediently on the container. It understood it wasn't supposed to wander off. They are truly incredible and when raised in captivity, very sociable.

I think they're adorable and they keep all the pesky fruit flies that occasionally come into my apartment due to my plants to a minimum. I only shoo them away from my keyboard because I'd feel awful if a little guy went under the keys which are quite spacious due to it bein' mechanical n' gettin' hurt as a result, so I'm very happy they learned to keep away from it.

I love when you say “they can be reasoned with“ 😂. Like you‘re making the spider a trade offer or something.

I love those guys. Got a jumping spider (I think) girl living on my balcony, she sometimes gets into my apartment and wanders around looking for prey. I took her on my hand couple of times, she seemed to like it. They are interestingly freaky little creatures. 🕷🕷🕷

My favorite of all our native spiders here in upstate New York. They really have personalities and are very bright and curious might I even say gregarious ? I had a large one years ago on my picnic table who kept me company for an entire day while I was reading and catching some sun. That spider watched every move I made and had no fear of me.

I’ve relocated two baby jumping spiders to safer locations at my work place and the first one I saved did not want to leave me lol. They were the sweetest. 🥰

I have a family of these jumpy boi's living in my back yard. They are smart, I can handle them and they eat the pests. One got in the house the other day and It caught me off guard, he raised his little arms at me, and I put him back outside.

jumping spiders are really unlikely to bite, like most spiders, but jumpies are like tiny microcats. i love all types of spiders but jumpies are the most adorable there are, closely followed by wolfies

I saw this tiny little jumping spider on the windshield of my car, and as I was trying to take a picture of it, he saw some even smaller bug and turned and tracked it and jumped and got it. It was so cool just watching it, it was like a little robot trying to exterminate something. He took the bug and then hid inside a little hole inside my windshield wiper.

I was bit by one that fell on my forehead and I didn't know what it was, so when I brushed it off it must've done it. I saw the spider run away on the door step. I didn't even realize it until I looked in the mirror an hour later and there were just 2 tiny red itchy bumps that looked like an ultra mini-zit. Went away by the end of the day. I love these spiders.

great video, I love jumpers too, sadly where I live I wont find them in the wild. But I wonder if there are differences from spiders that are from breeders and wild spiders.

Spencer, the jumping spider makes me visualize it as a mech-arachnid battle tank. It's squat body, big eyes, it's movement, it's awesome.

The Portia spider (jumping spider relative) has a primitive intelligence as well. Even having up to 30 different hunting methods it employs depending on the prey which are usually much larger spiders. Fascinating little creatures.
