I still remember shop class in high school, and one thing that was impressed upon us was the more exposed the blade is in operation, the bigger the 'hands free' zone needs to be. The guy would be MUCH better off using a bandsaw or scroll saw for the closer cutting work.
@IXxKratosxXI
@IXxKratosxXI 10 месяцев назад
not sure why you guys so pussy about his fingers. do you also painfully watch a chef cutting his vegetable´s? its their profession... you can tell all employee´s in the video are part of this process for many years. so is the man with the saw i assume. no finger missing, no obvious scars on his hands. he is quite careful in my opinion and is very far away from losing fingers.

also using calipers like that is inaccurate and slow. to setup a cut like that you should have gauge blocks ahead of time, especially if you're mass producing them as here. i see a lot of manual work being done here but the saw work is not impressive, it's dangerous.

How do you know who's pieces are who's when deep into a game? from the character on the bottom? The direction the pieces face?
@davidmella1174
@davidmella1174 10 месяцев назад
Yup it's from the direction the pieces face. What makes shogi unique is that captured pieces change sides, so all the pieces from both players must be identical. It's pretty easy to get used to when you learn the game, I think.

Why don't the craftsmen use miter saws? They can do the same cuts for small pieces without the risk of fingers being pulled into the saw. This dude free-handed a few pieces. What happens when that blade goes a little dull? The piece will snag/jump and his fingers will go towards the blade suddenly.
@TMS5100
@TMS5100 10 месяцев назад
these arent craftsmen, what we see in this video are random people being assigned a task who don't know any better. not only what they are doing incredibly dangerous, but also very inconsistent. they are often freehanding where a proper jig would be far faster and far more accurate. also note lack of ear protection.

Lower grade pieces are often made with Japanese maple, since that's a lot cheaper and more plentiful, but the fanciest pieces will be boxwood, with the top tier being boxwood from Mikurajima. Of course, a buyer can request any wood at all to be used, since it's all done by hand, but this video seems to be about boxwood pieces.
