The think was that the 90s was all about the "gathering of the tribes", it was a time where artists where encouraged to pull from various influences to create something that was fresh and new because the public was eclectic and wanted, more than anything, something that was new and decidedly "not 80s"... Back then, it was not at all seen as a paradox that a metalhead/skate punk/alternative kid would also be into psy/goa trance or techno, because all of it was alternative non-mainstream music. So, wasn't so much that The Prodigy was accepted in the alt rock/metal/hardcore/punk scene, The Prodigy was seen an integral part of the scene.

Keith was never an MC within the Prodigy, at least, not really. Him and Leeroy were dancers first and foremost, and since the third album, Keith started doing vocals, but MCing is NOT doing vocals. MCing has always been the task of Maxim (whom also started doing more fill in vocals), whom always kept the attention and energy of the audience in check.

90s EDM had a lot of old school hip hop samples in it, especially Big Beat stuff which The Prodigy helped popularize. The song you guys said you heard before "Smack My Bitch Up" is a vocal sample from Ultramagnetic MCs "Give the Drummer Some". Some other big EDM and Big Beat artists from this era worth checking out are Fatboy Slim, the Chemical Brothers, and the Crystal Method
@Hooderaw

Also, Keith Flint (lead singer) and Cool Keith from Ultramagnetic were cool with each other hence why he used that simple in the song.

The Prodigy is a techno/ rave project by composer/ producer Liam Howlett in the 90's ... Howlett used two frontmen to handle vocals up front - Keith Flint (the white punk rocker) and Maxim (the black guy in dreads)... Maxim did the vocals on another Prodigy single - 'Breathe' w/ Keith Flint. 'Firestarter' was Keith Flint on vocals... Sadly, he took his own life in 2019.

Great reaction guys! Thanks for being open minded. The Prodigy was music perfectly designed for the club. In that environment, you didn't notice nor feel the passage of 5+ minutes (no matter what your 'poison' of choice) - you were groovin' (hopefully with a fine lady or gent) and wanting that to last forever! The only other place where I've had their tracks going was while driving. Again, where you don't really notice the passage of time. Sitting in your easy chair at home - The Prodigy is NOT for that! Highly recommend: Breathe (a little less repetitive, but just as awesome), and if you would indulge, Smack My B!tch Up is stellar!! Cheers.

Fat of the land and Music for the jilted generation were dope albums from 90s and those songs always transport me to teenage years. I was metalhead, but Prodigy was band that was popular among both ravers, metalheads and punks. It had that dirty raw vibe.

The thing about a track like this is it's of a time. As time moves on music moves on so what is groundbreaking at the time becomes overtaken by next level. I remember the first thrash metal track i heard, Battery, by Metallica being super groundbreaking for me for power and speed and just being something completely new. This track is off the Prodigy 3rd album and really was different from all other dance / indie / techno of the time, and had vibe where it was across genre appeal. Techno heads liked it, a lot of rockers, indie and punk types liked it, same with the rest of the singles from this album, i'd say Breathe took it to another level and killer video.

Yes, The Prodigy were heavily influenced by Hip-Hop. Smack my bitch up", was sampled from the song "Give the Drummer Some" by the Ultramagnetic MCs. Diesel Power from the same arriving had a guest vocal from Kool Keith. They also used a lot of samples from dub Reggae, notably Max Romeo on Outer Space. A lot of 90s Brit dance was heavily influenced by hardcore Hip-Hop. Yes, Ye used a lot of UK dance music in Yeezus. He did a whole track that was just him rapping over an Aphex Twin tune.

I don't know if Ye was influenced directly by these guys, but yeah Yeezus for sure had a lot of (abrasive) electronic sounds that you'll also find throughout The Prodigy's music. Also yeah, that type of drum pattern is pretty common in that typical 90s music, specifically the breakbeat genre and like drum and bass/jungle. The drum pattern is called the "amen break" (even though in this song it wasn't exactly that) and it's been the foundation of manyyyyy hiphop joints too

This song also featured in the video game Wipeout 2097 (Wipeout XL) on playstation 1, that's how I discovered The Prodigy as well as other electronic stuff, and it does fit so well with the futuristic racing mood! I used to be very focused on rock/metal but this game sold me on electronic music, and 25 years later, I can see how much of an impact it had on my musical tastes :) You may want to check out The day is my enemy, Spitfire, Nasty or Breathe!

Curious how you guys will react to this one. Probably not the best, but LOVE The Fat of The Land album- such a banger! Next should be Breathe, Smack My Bitch Up, Diesel Power, Funky Shit, etc. P.s. I'm not normally an electronic music guy, but there are a few album I gravitated towards a few in the 90s.

Prodigy is essentially RAVE, but in a bottomline, a fusion, which is why they used to be at rock festivals, trance gatherings and of course, Rave concerts. They infuse not just one type of music though; often overlooked fact is they also used South Asian music in their numbers.

There is literally no other country that could have spawned The Prodigy - they are one of the great British bands, up there with The Beatles, Sex Pistols and The Jam.
