Petre Ştefănescu Goangă (b.1902 - d. 1973)was a great Romanian singer and teacher (his most famous pupil was Ludovic Spiess, but there were many others). He studied with the great Felia Litvinne in Paris. Because of the communist regime he didn't have a great international career, but he was very appreciated in his country. The most recordings with him were made, when he was about 60 or over 60. There is a wobble in his voice, because he was a man of very big proportions and by this age he had problems because of this. Mr. Joseph Shore made some comparisons with baritones singing the prologue and according to him Warren was the winner. Well according to me it is Goanga. :) By the way, Warren was Goanga's favourite baritone.

He was the canto professor of my father, during the sixties.A fost profesorul de canto al tatalui meu in anii 60.

It's a shame there is still no Litvinne up here. I have indeed heard that Favorite aria, and for me both that selection and her last of two or three "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix"'s (from the same session as the Favorite) are two of the finest entries in her discography. They both show she was as fine a mezzo as she was a soprano! Her two superb soprano cuts from the Trovatore Leonora are also from the same day. -- What a huge range!

Good news! There are now two Litvinne excerpts up on RU-vid, both sung in French translation. No Favorite aria, but two Verdi cuts: the "I sacri nomi" from AIDA, 1905 -- /watch?v=GyowTz-UzXo -- and the "D'amor sull'ali rosee" from TROVATORE, ca. 1910 -- /watch?v=zvyEvwOk7zQ -- The latter is more remarkable for its display of her range and her fabulous technique, while the former captures the sheer beauty of the voice at its zenith.

Any uploadable recordings from his prime? I'm interested in any Litvinne pupils, since she's the most direct line we have to the superstars of the 19th century (Garcia, Malibran, Nourrit, Pasta, Ronzi, Viardot, etc). So any records that survive of Litvinne pupils in their primes are always worthwhile. Unfortunately, no RU-vid videos of Litvinne are up as of now (10/24/08), even though a fine album of all her extant discs is now out. So prime examples of her pupils would be welcome.
