Hi Doc, thanks for putting this great instrument in the spotlight! It's so much more then just 2 Prophet 5's packed! I've got mine in 1986 and will play it into the future. Like any instrument you need to study and practice what it can bring you! So after all these years I feel, seeing this vid, responsable for giving this instrument it's credits 🙂 - the 10 has a better modulation routing then the 5 - you can mix the upper and lower LFO's (one of them has inverted sawtooth) - the first 2 hours be sure to hit tune often until it's stable>>it will sing! - it has a drone function - you definitly should use CV pedals to obtain a lot of expression! - the Poly Sequencer is very fast to use: in real time mode press record.play.hit start and it will play back directly//in step mode, you can sync with exterenal clock - be sure to by-pass the EQ section :-) - Mostly I use it in double mode to make 4 VCO pads with one of them a 5th or 9th; awesome Only downside: the J-wire keyboards....but that's with all SCI, Oberheim, Arp keyboards of that time... Love!

@@nilswegner2881 Jupiter 6 too. A lot of CEM VCO based machines had this feature because all the waveforms are always available at the same time at the CEM3340 chip's outputs (one for each waveform).

I have a hunch that sequential are (or have) making (or made) a modern veraion of this. Only it has 12 voices and is two prophet 6's . Not sure if there's a market for a dual manual synth in today's climate, but it'd be a mega synth if there was. I can remember spending some time with one of these many years ago, and being equally blown away and puzzled at once. They're huge and run hot ( the one i was playing ran hotter than a pizza out of the oven), but the sound was powerful; rich, majestic and warm. Thank you for uploading ✊.

@ about 6:41. Is it possible to Alternate voices in Double-Mode....or is Alternate only exclusive to Single mode? If so, would it be possible to have different Patches assigned to upper and lower voices? If so, then as you played, you'd hear two different patches randomly sounding.... is this possible? Oh...I thought the P10 also had an on-board sequencer?? If so, you didn't even mention it?

The Prophet is is the mainframe of synths. It's very raw, not that musical. A good alternative is the Yammy CS80. It's really exciting and it's the Crazy Christine of synths, has it's own organic spirit.

The "stepping" on the resonance sounded like picking out the fundamentals to me, not digital stepping. Pretty sure it uses the analogue Curtis 3320 chip

Well at least it has more steps than the Commodore 64's SID chip. But early 80's computer, memory was limited, so it had two registers per byte for the filters and volume. So only 16 steps of resolution.

Sequential Circuits Prophet has to be the coolest name for a company/synthesiser ever, I always wanted to know more about it just because of that (plus it looks super cool!) thanks :) I did find it a bit disappointing though, personally I think my Juno 60 was better.

How often did stuff arrive from just noodling on these synths? You'd spend hours learning what each section was capable of, finding stepping stones of sounds along the way. Those, of course, became your reference points - if you noted them - for future projects.

The key elements of most synths are always the same: oscillators, filters, modulators, LFOs, envelopes, effects, etc. It’s a matter of locating them and understanding how they connect. But once you know your way around it’s a done deal eeeeeeasy!!

When I first learned this nuke existed (roughly 20 years after it was introduced), the first cat who popped in my head was Ray Manzarek. Would’ve been perfect in 1980 for emulating his 2-Manuel organ/Rhodes bass arrangement. (I had the same reaction to the photograph of the full-blown Oberheim Eight Voice.). It’s not tough for me to imagine how this 2-manual Prophet gave Tom Oberheim the impetus to create the digitally-controlled split/layer function of the OBXa. Could someone confirm that? Although I may have preferred having a Prophet T-8 to the 10 (that weighted keyboard with full MIDI and polyphonic aftertouch, baby!), there’s no denying what a *killer* synth this is! That release button must’ve been something that Dave Smith snagged from Moog Music Inc.

My '78 PAIA has three VCOs which have simultaneous Sine, Triangle, Saw and PWM Square outputs. Why are you impressed with those VCOs ? Much more impressive things about that Prophet than the limited VCOs it has.

Very nice and informative presentation. Thank you. This big and heavy dinosaur is something for collectors. For me this old (somewhat boring, sorry) Prophet sound is a little bit overrated (I own the Prophet 08 Rev 2). Nowadays there are better poly synths (analog or digital, Deepmind, Peak/Summit, Hydrasynth, UDO Super 6, MODAL Argon 8, MFB Synth Pro, ...).

I was hoping that finally someone would do a video of a prophet 5/10 to make me love it. Sadly not this time. Was hoping for something more musical and more than just the usual string chords. I just find it kinda sterile. Maybe I've never heard it's best. I live in hope.

I know Tangerine Dream used the Prophet and so did Genesis. Genesis used it on "Home By the Sea" and "Second Home by the Sea" and Tangerine Dream used it on Tangram. I'm certain they used the Prophet on more though. I believe the opening sequence in Tangram is done by the Prophet, so if you're looking for something different than strings, that might be up your alley. :)
