The Prophet on Marriage by Khalil Gibran
Then Almitra spoke again and said...
"And what of Marriage, master?"
And he answered saying:
You were born together,
and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings
of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the
silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love.
Let it rather be a moving sea between
the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous,
but let each of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone
though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together.
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress
grow not in each other's shadow.

+PoetrySpoken.com the piece was selected by my husband and I. Khalil Gibran is one of my favourite poets. Your reading moved me and was so well done. Powerful, strong and emotionally felt. If I could request another reading from you Sean it would be Khalil Gibran On Children. Another powerful piece dear to my heart. Much light and blessing to you.

Beautiful readings and they truly move me to tears. I Have a request. Could you read a poem by Hafiz from the Daniel Ladinsky translations? 🌾

Sarah Curtis Thank you so much for your comment, Sarah. Yes, I have added Daniel Ladinsky to my list. Admittedly, I am very behind with all the recent requests. I'll keep you posted : ) Have a great weekend. My Best.

This is the mystic way of saying infidelity is fine! if you do not drink from each other's cup whose cup do you drink from? This is the eternal problem with vague, obscure aphorisms---Any meaning will do.
@g.j

Your own cup. Only your interpretations makes it so as infedility.

If you drink only from each other's cup, eventually one of you will have a dry cup from which to draw nothing. To me, it is saying, yes, be there for each other, but do not lose who you are as an individual in the combining of your lives. As a therapist once told me "There's three elements to every successful, healthy marriage...'yours','mine' and 'ours'....you have things you enjoy doing that I do not..I have things I enjoy doing that you do not...and then there are the commonalities we share"
