About 482,000 plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters are employed in the US. Proud to be one of them...was in construction for 5 years but now on the journey of being a residential service plumber. About a month in and still have lots to learn on the sales side. Keep up promoting the trade! I think its an extremely complex job and it takes more than just plumbing and if youre a good plumber youre probably good at a lot of different aspects of life

Good for you. I don’t think humans were really meant to sit in front of a computer all day. I’m a commercial fisherman and needed to start learning something else on the side and was thinking of coding but my wife said I should try plumbing because she could never see me in an office in front of a screen all day long (plus in my state you don’t need any formal education to get licensed you just need to pass a test and have a master sign off on your hours). Plumbing is like the streets. It isn’t for anyone….but eventually, your time will come, if you stick with it. Just remember that there’s a difference between doing what you know, and knowing what you doing. And just like the streets, whenever you think you’ve gotten good at whatever it is that you’re doing, that’s the moment you got caught.

My brother convinced me to become a plumber. He's been in wielding for about 10 years already and gonna go in for master-wielding. And I have been a butcher for 8 years and the money is fine that comes out of it. But he convinced me to get into the trade and, I was worried I wasn't gonna do good enough, but rekindling my knowledge for math wasn't that bad so I've been working on that stuff and, and gonna have to learn more about the trade. But I'm definitely hooked. And excited to try.

I'm thinking about going back to school. I went to art college and university in '09 - '14, I have a BFA in photography, but nothing has really come of it (and yep, when I was considering where to go for post-secondary school ca. '08, the trades weren't even talked about. I was into art, and that was okay.). I went through a huge shift in interests almost as soon as I graduated, and now simply being a good, kind, helpful person is more important to me. I haven't had a job that paid more than slightly above minimum wage (currently CAD$15.30 here in New Brunswick, Canada), and nothing that has allowed me to save up for later in life. I don't even know if I'll be able to retire. For the last year or two I've been considering going to a New Brunswick Community College and getting a certificate in either plumbing or welding (I'm leaning toward plumbing). I know that these jobs pay well, they're recession-proof and they're in demand. I won't do this for a while yet because I have to somehow land a job (it's tough these days) and save up, but I'd like to make this happen, I'd like to have a job that both allows me to help others and gives me job and financial security.
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING Месяц назад
That’s awesome your you want to help others. 💪 but before you can do that you got to be able to help yourself, two years is a long time to consider something, sometimes you just gotta go forward it. At least this is what Ive learned when I was in a similar situation. Trades aren’t recession proof they often slow down but you’re right they do pay higher than most. The key is to plan ahead. Overall the trade was the best decision I could have made for my family and I and I believe it’s a good start for anyone looking for a sustainable job. But I would suggest talking to a rep and joining an apprenticeship to start out. That’s the route I took and glad I I did. Best of luck to you!

Hey man Im about to start plumbing school in a few weeks but wondering if this trade is for me. Im not a hands on person but I am very analytical and detail oriented. Im a problem solver to the point where I cant let things go until I accomplished fixing it. Im also a cleansy person. My fear is the fact that im not a handy person naturally it will discourage me to quit. I'm also afraid of heights. I heard sometimes plumbers have to be in 12ft height.
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING 6 месяцев назад
lol that’s a tough one. I will never discourage you from joining because I believe you can have what ever you put your mind to get. With that being said, don’t let fear hold you back from anything. You’ve got great qualities to bring to the table and the fear of heights may get in the way but not enough to derail you. If they like you and you are teachable and on top of things, they may have you just stay on the ground for the most part. (Depends on company and your relationship) but If plumbing something you’re really considering and you already enrolled in school I’d say go for it.

The process is about the same no matter what trade you decide, maybe research a few and see what one jumps out at you. I chose plumbing based on timing trying to just get in trade lol. Let me know what u decided when the time comes, and thanks for watching

So I am getting into plumbing and have tons of sales experience. Can you elaborate a bit on what you mean by sales and plumbing? I am currently getting involved with my local union for plumbing and pipefitting because I love welding as a hobby and like the physical labor and geometry part of pipefitting and plumbing commercially.

That’s awesome! And as for the sales, I have been on both sides as far as commercial and residential. If you’re looking to sale which residential service companies would be your best bet. There are a lot of plumbing companies out there that offer great incentives as far as piece work or commission on services sold along with an hourly rate. It all depends on what your goals. Commercial, for instance being apart of a union in my opinion is pretty set in stone as far as there system goes. Unless you get on as a marketing consultant or start your own company there isn’t to many opportunities their for sales man. Hope this helps.

@@chrismorrison52Great, I’m glad it helped. As a teacher, I can see that our current system of education is antiquated. To put it bluntly, it was developed by a bunch of pathetic morons, who tried to squeeze everyone into a little tiny box. Get creative, practice math, and you will probably find you like it more than you hate it. All the best.

If you just getting in the game, specifically union knowing what I know now, I would start off where they see fit and go from there. The union set the standards so your in a good place. Allow your self to experience it all and decide from there. What works for me may not work for you, always discover things for yourself self and you’ll make better decisions along the way 💯

From what I understand union apprenticeships are extremely difficult to get, like only a 15 or 20 percent acceptance rate. Is that true ?
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING 4 месяца назад
My apprenticeship was known non-union so I wouldn’t be able to answer that for sure. I do have friends you have journeyed out non-union who are now union. From what I’ve been told it is not an easy process but over time (some months) they did get in. As far as becoming an apprentice I’m sure it’s just a waiting game and those who are persistent will eventually get in if you stay on top of it.

Should I go to college first and get a level 2 certificate then go into the apprenticeship or should I just go straight into an apprenticeship? (UK)
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING
@LIFE-N-PLUMBING Месяц назад
Not sure how the UK does it. But here in the US it would be a waste of time to go to school for a certificate and then still have to join the apprenticeship for 4 to 5 years to receive a journeyman license. I just straight into the apprenticeship myself, I really don’t see why anyone would go to college unless you plan on being an engineer or designer whereas college credentials or needed. I would talk to the apprenticeship first though so they can get more into detail and point you in the right direction. Best of luck man 💯
