Want to make the step into the mesmerizing world of gouache painting but unsure if a whole gouache set is worth the investment? Let's walk through the upsides and downsides of buying a full gouache set versus separate paint tubes together.
Decisions like these can be nerve-racking, and I'm excited to lend a helping hand by sharing my personal experiences. Learning about gouache and making your first buying choices should be fun and inspiring. Hence, I've decided to dive deep and discuss the pros and cons of investing in gouache sets. Specifically, we're going to be looking at the coveted Holbein Gouache set - the Irodori spring edition.
On the one hand, a Holbein Gouache set provides a wide array of prearranged and harmonious colors, offering ease and convenience. On the other hand, purchasing individual tubes allows for customization and gives you the freedom to explore unique color combinations on your own terms. So, what’s right for you? Let's figure it out!
I'm painting a bouquet with the Irodori set. If you want to see the full tutorial, it's available in my Membership. 👇

sometimes when i don't feel creative i go to a pre-made set to see what colors i can make, it will usually inspire me to do something with that palette.

As a beginner I bought a 12 tube set of Winsor & Newton gouache which was great for the price & the colors. It was a split primary with a tube of the three (orange, green & violet) secondary colors, a brown, a black, & a white. It made color mixing fairly easy. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information with us.

I'm still learning and definitely went back and forth over buying tubes vs sets. I started with a few tubes but did get sucked into buying all four of these sets late last year. They were too pretty to resist! I don't think the spring set is well suited to be used on its own, but the summer set could be (it has both ultramarine and white, for starters). Half of the colors in the spring set have PW6 added and others are light to start (like the lemon and light ochre), so definitely not ideal for getting darker values in. It's good as a supplement if you want some convenience colors to avoid mixing and running out, like you mentioned for backgrounds. Realistically, I do not need all the 48 colors I ended up with, but when I start with only the primaries, I sometimes end up mixing the same things over and over...not because I *can't* mix other things, but because I have my comfort mixes and end up in a rut. I am looking forward to challenging myself to use different palettes for paintings based on what's available in these sets, grabbing a couple of colors at a time to change things up. Your videos on gouache have been really helpful as I've been figuring out the medium, so thank you!

Yes, now I see I should have bought the summer set, but the spring one was so cute! Even if I have a hard time with it!

I have this set. I bought it recently but I’ve not used it yet.I really like the colors as they are very romantic and unusual. I bought them to combine with a few of my other tubes to add a little spice to my usual pallet as accents. I do agree about the marketing; It really drew me in. 😊Thank you for your wonderful videos.❤

hello , cecile !! norakag, here.. i think the marketing is fabulous , with these lol very romantic notion, to create sets with each season .. i have been fighting the temptation to buy these , as the desire to have them is more that ( desire to own them lol). I definitely don't need them.. I bought three of the irodori tubes ( open stock) that looked interesting to me .. and even though prices have gone down quite a bit on these , I still resist lol This was fabulous video .. I also don't think I would limit myself to using only the paints from one set .. None of them , from what I've studied about them, would work well for me .. I don't want to be frustrated , when painting lol It's my state of bliss, and I like to keep it that way 😆😆😂😂Thanks again .. Norakag 😁😁

i doubt you will read this but the summer set actually covers a a lot of base colours for me. the white although not a perfect white but more of a chalky colour seems to be ok as well as the black. I was torn between it and the spring set oh and the winter one. But the summer one I would say is worth it if you still want the freedom to mix.

Thanks for this, agree to avoid so many colours before knowing what to do. My first tube set was one with primary CMYK + white by Schmincke Akademie. Tubes are 60ml each, at 4.99€. Excellent Schmincke quality, unbeatable price per 100ml. It is perfect to learn mixing too, without feeling that the paints are too precious because they are too expensive. I am curious about the Holbein Gouache Starter set (5 tubes for around 35€). Any thoughts?
