On the R5, if you hit the red record button, it automatically goes into video mode C3. so all you need to do is put your favorite video settings on custom mode 3, and that red record button goes right to it in one click.

@@MannyOrtiz Actually Manny, ever since the EOS R, that button was a dedicated video button, and as Zak Dalin said, you can map your favorite setting to it, and whenever you want to record, just hit it. I've not heard many reviewers even mention that button over the years, and that's amusing, because they faulted the camera for its video selection process. Now if you want to have 3 custom settings on that button, well you can't, only the one C3 option, but what a world, it's all there. And hey, really, thanks for your thoughts - you're a professional w/ tons of experience, who better to talk to us, I'm grateful that you do - Thanks

One problem with the low budget, third party lens manufacturers is their gear was not fully compatible. Instead of blaming the third parties, many owners were blaming Canon for the flaws and deficiencies. Canon was being dragged through the mud in social media. For example, the Viltrox mount adapters seemed to have a tendency to drain the batteries, even when the camera was physically switched OFF. BTW, I watched your entire video. I will watch you again in 2023. 👍🏼

Bro, what's with the smack talk on Nikon cameras? I shoot Nikon, Canon, and the Sony A7sIII for volunteer work. I have found the Z9 to be my favorite by far. I will say that I have not shot the R5 or R3. I control aperature, shutter speed, and iso settings on my Z9 with two wheels and a button. I really only use the video and shooting menus. It is honestly the easiest camera I have used. Also, the colors from the Nikon are the best I have ever seen, and that is said after having made some great images from my Canon that I purchased while in college. My issue with Canon is for years I was waiting for them to add a 120 fps option to one of their more affordable options, but they never did until recently. They have a habit of hamstringing their more affordable line. If I was just shooting sports the R3 would be the clear winner, but the Z9 gets the nod as I also shoot wildlife. At the end of the day, it is really hard to go wrong with Sony, Nikon, or Canon. I personally feel that one of the best ways to judge a camera's functionality is to see how fast you pick up on the controls without ever having used it before. With that being said, in terms of being intuitive the Nikon Z9 is the clear winner, and it's a tie between Canon and Sony with the exception of the Sony menu system which scares me. It's a jungle in there!

Don’t worry about scripting or making your vids perfect! They are better than anything out there. I shoot R5 and A7IV. I actually feel Sony feels better in my hand as my hands are small. It feels more like a machine where the R5 feels Fisher Price to me. Also I can’t live without zebra now. Don’t know why Canon can’t do that, it should just be a firmware fix. I noticed when you were shooting you’re metering one stop under and that’s a pain as it introduces noise but is critical if you don’t want to blow out highlights on the Canon. Reluctantly feel like I need to keep 2 systems. Sony outside, Canon studio 😢

People fail to realize there are people who like the smaller grip size of the A7 series. I like the way it feels in hand. I don’t want a bigger camera, that was the whole point of mirrorless outside the video advantages. Every RU-vidr complains about ergos too much, because for people with smaller or skinny fingers, the a7 is better. Me personally I have long but skinny fingers. The a7siii works perfectly for me.

I bought the EOS R 1,5 year ago thinking that Canon would eventually open up the RF mount, until then I can adapt my EF lenses. I was going to buy the R6, but I'm seriously thinking about buying Sony a7iv instead.. I know the old EF glasses adapt well to the RF, but the new Sigma and Tamron mirrorless glasses are phenomenal with compact size and weight compared to old DLSR lenses. I'm just getting sick and tired that I'd be forced to buy $2000+ lenses as a hobbyist.. I will not. I'l tell you why they don't jump to 3rd party lenses, it's just a pure business strategy. Sigma and Tamron are making killer lenses, and by killer, I mean they are killing 1st party Brand lenses. You see how they took over the DSLR world, a lot more people bought 3rd party lenses because they are cheaper, on par or even better with image quality. So I believe (For now) Canon doesn't want that competition, they want to sell their own glass as much as possible. If they let Sigma or Tamron in their mirrorless game, they are gonna loose, Sigma is gonna come out with an ART mirrorless line and crush canon just like it did with DSLR. I believe this is going to be temporary though. It makes sense.

As an aside, Canon says all their mirrorless autofocus systems are AI trained as well. They just never made it a huge bullet point way back when. I believe Fro pointed this out wondering why Sony was making a big deal about it. I can say with my R7, everything I shoot from birds to jet fighters, the autofocus never lets go and I have thousands of tack sharp images to sort through. It's amazing. Compared to my 7Dmk2 it's night and day, and going into the R7 I wasn't expecting that AT ALL. The color science between the two is about the same, IMO. Thanks for taking the time to share your techniques; My professional work is within CGI modeling and texturing, but as a hobby I take nature photos, so it really helps to have a pro out there that shares their thoughts. I need more depth of field in my work (photogrammetry), so micro four thirds is an obvious choice...if you ever get the chance, I'd love to see you do a session with an OM1 or GH6 and give your thoughts. As far as I am concerned, as long as your work kicks ass, I don't care if the video's are less scripted. Again, thanks for these!

Canon is ripping people off with their lenses they upped the price on all the lenses by $1000 and there was no need to do that. The reason why they don’t let third-party lens manufacturers in is because they know that with today’s technology they are producing lenses that are almost indistinguishable at half the price.

I disagree ref the Sony a7rv. I found the auto focus better than the r3. I had more hits with less fuss. Agree the r5 is a super all rounder though. I also find the new Sony view finder knocks the socks off the canon.

Switched from using Nikon DSLRs for over 10 years to an R5 almost 2 years ago. Agree with pretty much everything said here. Two things to mention for me, Canon color profiles don't seem to play as well with Adobe products as well as Nikon does, and while it's still absolutely possible to get some great color it's annoying having to wrestle with it. And two, it's annoying that there's no audio on 4k 120 video. If my phone can do it, why not my almost $4k camera?
@shang-hsienyang1284
@shang-hsienyang1284 Год назад
Because the SoC on your phone is likely to be much more powerful than your camera. The iPhone 13 and 14 for example, uses the tsmc N5 process. No camera companies uses a semiconductor technology so advanced at the moment. I do not know what process the R5 uses, but it's easy to look up tsmc, Samsung, and Intel's advanced node customers to see who's on the list.

4k 120 on a camera is like working with 1800MB/s, that's wayy more than what a smartphone can do, that's like more than 10x the data a smartphone camera is working with. Audio isn't much bit rate heavy though, they could have squeezed some power for that too.

Capture One correctly imports Canon Colors just like Canon's software (but far less buggy). I don't know why Adobe has such issues with Canon's RAW formats (and JPGs to some extent)

@@KoenKooi I've used those profiles (especially useful when there weren't any Canon profiles to use at all), but both the default Canon & ColorFidelity profiles feel like they're missing something when compared to C1. Am not a fan of Canon, too heavy, low dynamic colors compared to others,I like to have full control of my camera and that's something I feel Canon does not give me. Skin tone is never an issue for me on my Sony or Nikon camera. Also, my friends are planning to switch to Sony cause their experience after using my sony changed their mind. Camera use is simply subjective.

Something you did not mention and in my opinion is a plus, is the compatibility with old EF lenses. Is true that by now we don't have Sigma or Tamron RF lenses, but is also true you can buy a sencond hand 24-70 or others EF lenses and is perfectly working with the Canon adapter which is not even expensive. The only thing is missing here in Canon lineup is a Hi Megapixel Stacked sensor sport Camera especially for wildlife photography where we need more megapixel, Like the A1

As many of us photographers we all know, most modern camera these days are good enough and crisp enough and superb enough image quality. The end point really now is usability and ergonomics. It seems to fall on to "how easy to [fill in blanks]" now. And Im glad we are getting to a point that image quality is now just second nature and its more now falls on composition and style of the image. Which separate us from each other :)

I‘m still on a Z7, coming from D810, D800e, D700, D2x, F5 … you get the point. I’m a freelance photog for a living. Since I want to do more video, I bought an FX3 and have now also bought the A7rV. Yes, I know that Nikon plans on releasing the Z8 but I‘m just tired of waiting for them to release new bodies (I don’t consider the Z2a new body). And the Z9 is just to big as I want sleaker cameras. Oh well, might be just me. I spent a lot of money on Nikon S lenses but they are incompatible with any other brand. So I end up selling them. The G master lenses on the other hand can adapt to Nikon Z via TZE02 adapter and they work good. Not great but good enough.

Thanks for your thoughts. At about 5:05, the flip screen thing, that's very controversial. R5, R6, R6II, R3 are not intended to be vlogging cameras and the target customers are people being 99% behind that cameras and not in front of it. For vlogging use a GoPro or a dedicated vlogging camera. I'm mainly a wildlife photographer, shooting low, a vari-angle screen such as the Fuji X-T2, -T3, -T5, -H1, -H2, GFX-100S, Nikon Z9 have it would be much more convenient, screen always in lens axis, at both shooting positions, landscape and portrait and not interfering with the left arm and/or left wrist, always prone to break off. To me, that flip screen is always a pain in the but, a design flaw on enthusiasts/pro bodies for vlogging hype. I never ever record a second vlogging with my R3 and R6II. I wished they spent them a vari-angle screen like on the Fuji's.

I messed around with a couple of my friends' Sony cameras after having used some Canon/Nikon cameras in passing over the years, and just trying to convince the camera to take a picture at the desired settings was such a chore. The camera just getting out of your way in the process of taking a picture is so important given all the other things to worry about.

Canon color science isn’t more true to life. In fact quite the opposite. People have measured this. It’s magenta because it’s pleasing, it’s not accurate lol. I’m Asian, I have a lot of yellow skin tones in my skin. Not a ton of magenta and pink, I look “better” in canon photos, but I don’t look like me. But beyond that, tony northrup did a blind camera test years ago, and despite everyone claiming they liked canon colors better, the blind tests showed people liked Sony and nikon colors more when they weren’t told which camera was which.

If u bought z5 even 990 usd when sale now and it 24 mpx, suck af but iq nearly like 95% that only can see different if u push 2-3 ev. Unless u are real real pro, willing to spend 5000 usd, sony a74 with cheaper lens gona be best choice . canon r got no 3rd lens. And r+ rp have dinamic rang same as 5d3/5d4 that lower 1-2 stop vs sony nikon. For hobby or amateur photographer, a sigma 28-70 2.8 or tamron 28-75 2.8 ~ 800 usd is a cheaper and still good choice. If u want high end lens 3rd, a sigma 30/50/85 1.4 or samyang /sigma 135 is good choice that cheaper 40% vs sony and still got good af/iq .

Canon vs Apple - Canon lens controversy is similar to iOS users being forced to buy Apple devices, while Android users can buy from multiple manufacturers. If you use iOS and you don't mind buying ONLY Apple hardware, why complain about Canon doing the same thing? I think competition is a good thing, and I do believe Canon will soon allow 3rd party lenses with autofocus. Most people don't realize that 3rd party RF lenses ARE allowed (as of December 2022) as long as the lenses are manual focus. MicroHDMI is a joke. I still can't understand why Canon did this. I was really hoping they would fix this on the R3.

for newbie, those canon RF lenses and body with dual slot card feels like a Lamborghini. EOS R and RP are single slot card, what those newbie have to do to start their business? buying 5000USD new canon body with dual slot? rent a camera? it would be easier and cheaper buying an a7III or z5. or go with fuji route which is even more cheaper and very capable for serious jobs. i dont believe those 3rd party lenses sucks, because there are photographer that earn their living using viltrox, samyang, 7artisan, etc. no client will be complaining about the photographer using viltrox or samyang, as long as the picture is good. sony do the 3rd party lenses because they learned from PLAYSTATION the original. they knew many people are copying their games and selling it illegally, the piracy but that also mean more and more people will be coming and buying the console, buying their memory card, and buying their dual shock joystick. thats why playstation very successful. canon just shot them self and deleting them self from competition, they probably want to evolving into exclusive brand like hasselblad or laica. earlier this morning i read some statistic that canon is the most popular brand used by amateur photographers, 27% use canon, nikon 25%, and sony 16%. all those canon users probably stuck forever with their APSC M50 or M6, forever taking pictures of flower, cat and blurry windows.

Who needs the screen for changing shutter speed? Far more complex with touch. On Sony just keep the eye on the viewfinder and dial the backdial until changed. If you have configured your camera with "My Menu" and custom button and dials you find everything immediatly. For normal shooting I don't need the menu at all. Everything on dials and buttons configured. Sony even easier and more customizeable and therefore useability is much better. Who needs the screen? Sony has 9 Megapixel highres viewfinder which is much more important. The Canon R3 and Nikon Z9 are much too fat. Canon R5 is not useable: Overheating (even on photos, I saw it personally on sports) and 30min recording meeting. None of these topics exist on the Sony A1. And Battery Grip is available. The color differences depend on the RAW used converter anyway (Lightroom, Capture One). As Capture One measures each camera model colors are anyway the same. And as you do color grading anyway colors will be "done" there. Canon proprietary lens system is from the 20th century. 21st century is open systems. Bye Bye Canon, forever.
