David Maines, 100 Huntley Street (Canada), kept a carpenters wage for himself, based on what he figured Jesus and several apostles made. Which Maines said was comfortable to raise a family. he had no scandals that I know of. He was more the era of Swaggart, so many might not know of him, though I'm pretty sure 100 Huntley Street is still running w/ other ministers. Francis Chan is a a modern day preacher, and when his church was going mega, and things were getting too comfortable, he completely walked away from the church he built up. he never saw it as his anyway. Chan started from scratch, where ever the Lord wanted to lead him. So many thought he was crazy for giving up what had become such a cushy gig. Chan apparently felt like it had all become chains, and that he wasn't being used by God in a dramatic enough way.

I remember watching Good Day with my grandmother on Boston Channel 5. She and John Willis - both Class Acts. Eileen was on the show the longest. Always treated all respectively. Very sad. No one can fathom the depth of the effect of sin with all human beings. I think as I have watched Jimmy Swaggert back than and now as he has a church on TV that it is easy to be filled with religious pride, but that is complicated in how it takes root in ministers especially. He was brazen in his remarks against Jim Bakker and others, how he could do the things he did shocks many. I feel very concerned for the many people who left their faith in God because of his actions. It shook my box quite a bit when it all happened. But I know the power of God to save and to FORGIVE, so it does not surprise me NOW he has a thriving ministry. His son Donnie is a great preacher, also his grandson Gabriel. It is always going to be a sad commentary of his ministry no matter how many years go by. Yet God is able to work through our failures. I would be very surprised if Jimmy himself does not still suffer deeply over his sins at times, he no doubt must think about the many people who were affected by his behavior. Remember however, that God knows his heart, God judges and "Vengeance is Mine says the LORD, I will repay."
People that gave up their relationship with God (backslid) will not be able to blame a single person for falling into sin when they stand before God. My bible says to go and sin no more.

I remember reading one time, might have been on the back of one of his album covers ,that he woke up one morning with the 'gift' of being able to play piano....that was enough for me. I never had anything to do with him after that.

Then he cheered up when he realized he'd live and could keep sinning and selling the Gospel without really repenting. But his sins follow him, don't they?

Marrying women is at least a moral fair way to treat them and give them dignity. We have to provide a house and give them a dowry and the dowry price could get from 5,000$ to 100,000$ or even more. The gospel means you trust God more than your own flesh. We accept that we have a sinful nature, but we also accept that Jesus really helped sinners become saints when they keep asking God for the fruits of the Spirit.

It looks as though Swaggart was certainly set up, as we can all be caught out through any weak link that we show the devil, but the angle that becomes revealed about the young daughter of the lady is very disturbing. That needs some attention to address that situation.

How dare some of you hypocritical Christians defend this man, as if he's a saint? No wonder people don't take Christians seriously when they claim to love God. When God blesses people Christians joyfully accept it and praise Him. When God punishes people, especially preachers in such high positions as Jimmy was in, people should also accept it joyfully, and praise HIM for executing judgement, and know that He is real!!!!
I totally agree with you. God executes judgement and soon we are all going to see it becsuse these are the last days and time has run out. As for brother Swaggart, and Jim Baker, i don't uphold them but I also saw mercy and God's judgement . They are the only two that I saw from that time who fell that God completely restored. I was just glad to see on both mens lives both judgement and mercy. The Devil did not have the last say over them. That is very comforting to me. I saw the Sovereignty of my King Jesus. Amen, judgement begins in the house of God, as the Bible says. When a man sins his fellow Christian should correct him kindly. Same if he sins again. But after that, he knows what he is doing. So we can't say 'forgive him Father for he knows not what he does', as we would the outsider who is not yet a brother Christian. God will judge more strictly the teacher of religion. And God's Spirit has spoken, he left Swaggart to be with some other preacher who took sin more seriously. JS could have repented if he'd been taking God and His Word seriously, but he became careless. His repentance was false and his ministry is of the world and of human habit, not if the Power of God.

And the Bible is clear, that we are to expose evil. Judgement begins in the house of God. We don't expose people who don't know what they're doing, we give them a chance, gently. We keep doing this, but if a man known as a believer keeps sinning despite kind patient Biblical warnings, then he knows what he is doing. He is sinning deliberately and the Bible says if he does that, there is no hope for him. He is putting Jesus back up on the cross. The people who side with Jimmy are going against the Bible and they should listen to the Bible which says have nothing to do with a person who is known as a believer but who is abusive. It hurts but we should not give him money or say he is our brother because he did not care for his ministry or the sheep he should have minister to. But when one repents, I thought they must repent with a sincere heart? Once you repent, should you be forgiven for repeating the same sin(s) over and over again? Sinning in ignorance constitutes no punishment, but if you are well aware of the consequences before committing the sin, brace yourself for the punishment, because God will put the hammer down, which in Jimmy's case, justice was in order, and it was appropriately served by God. Now when Jimmy repented with a sincere heart, with no intentions of "REPEATING" the sin, his slate was wiped clean. The problem is, Christians are not being taught the correct way to serve God. Luke.12: [37] Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
