One small detail I really appreciated was whenever Abby gets angry or mad she switches to Korean, like when she yells at the kids for throwing a piece of paper on the floor or when she mixed up the concert dates. It really added to her character and the movie as a whole.

Indeed. I'm not a psychologist so this is just an anecdotal experience, but I believe languages are intricately connected to emotions. I'm bilingual with Spanish as a native language and if I want to distance myself from an emotion when I'm speaking of it, I use English. Spanish just hits harder, gets to the heart. I'm pretty certain a lot of people can relate. Also cursing in Spanish is just so much more stress relieving

@@ThatOneGanyuMain Totally relate. Based on my emotions or mood, I will be switching from Spanish to English and vice versa. And I think Its also because there are some phrases expressed better in any of the languages... I might even say some words in Hurdu that I learned from a friend, because it feels that it expresses the feeling better.

I think that is a human thing that we only notice when a person had a mother tongue that is separate from the language they speak normally. I noticed that with immigrant communities and you may be talking to a person that appears to have “no accent” but add enough passion and they go back to the “mother tongue” (or the language they speak with the family).

From a storytelling perspective, it’s actually a very good character trait that makes a lot of sense for Abby to love the panda, which I hadn’t realized until I watched this video. It’s pretty much established that the panda represents strong emotions, whether positive or negative. And Abby’s whole thing is to recognize her feelings and immediately act on them with no filter. So Abby must be really happy not just to see a fluffy panda, but also because it’s Meilin letting her emotions show. I don’t think Abby understands why Mei would want to keep her panda in, because she sees no reason not to act on her emotions, not to voice what she’s feeling, and Mei doesn’t do that often. So it just gets her really excited because she recognizes, deep down, that emotion aren’t bad and should be expressed, and of course, she loves seeing her friend have a free route to feel in the form of a red panda. Also, it’s a very cute panda. I do wish we'd had more time to develop Abby and the other side characters tho.

I'm a super energetic person, and I tend to like colors that are on the cooler, calming end of the spectrum, while my husband, who is the opposite of me, prefers colors that are "louder", like yellows, reds, and oranges. We're also like this when it comes to music - he likes loud, wild music, and I prefer softer, calmer music. Games, too - he likes bullet hells and boss rushes, and I like cozy games and farming sims. So maybe it's the same with Priya and Abby? Priya's low-energy, so she would prefer colors that would energize her, while Abby's high-strung nature would gravitate towards colors that would calm her down?

Abby is literally reminds me of myself as a child. The only difference is my school labeled my hyperactivity and over-emoting as an "Anger Issue" because of one particular incident that I apparently threw a desk. (I don't remember it but that's what my parent's said) I went to one therapy session and they gave me a book about anger. I took it to heart and ended up turning into someone who has anxiety over if I'm being too expressive or not. I never felt close to kids my own age and up until high school would either hang out with people older than me (teachers/assistant teachers, counselor, est.) or younger than me (In the case of me being bullied in 4th grade and me being sent to lunch breaks with kindergarteners to prevent it.) I've gotten better but a lot of those old anxieties are there. Lol, but that's life for you.

I can relate. I was basically Abby as a child but they also labeled me with having ODD along with ADHD. I didn't throw a desk but I threw a chair at my teacher after she separated this boy and me because he cut my hair and I punched him. However, I kept having a lot of anger issues and I wasn't medicated for my ADHD. Now a days I'm medicated with some co and multi morbidities but I can slow down enough to get my filter to work, even if it's a bit weak. Work in progress.

Unrelated to the video, but I’ve got a serious question that I’ve gotta ask. I’m still quite young, teen years, and I’m dealing with existential dread. It’s causing problems everywhere in my life, I have very bad panic attacks, and I have recently put I minor hole in concrete.
@blu3cheesecake978

I'm not a psychiatrist, but a few years back me and a friend got hit hard with existential dread. From my experience, I think that existential dread is linked to a feeling of not having control, specifically over your future. As a teen it's difficult, you are burdened with the knowledge of the world but are still too young to influence it in any meaningful way. My solution was to try and establish more control over myself. I've worked to break habits that I see as counterproductive, while focusing on my goals for the future. My dread was based on the negative affects humans have had on the planet, so I made my goal to help save endangered species. Using this, I've tried to make a staircase of steps that will help get me there, so that I can feel like I'm working towards being able to influence what hurts me. And when I feel like I just need to do something or I'll go crazy, I've taken what opportunities for action I have. I started picking up litter because it represented me confronting the challenges ahead, and making a good impact on the world. Picking up litter is effectively my side quest. I have my sights set higher, but you cannot only focus on one goal, and it's a great mood lifter when you feel that your actions have made an impact. I don't intend to stop with the small hurdles, but they keep me going on the way to the large one. I hope some amount of this helps. Existential dread sucks, and though I'm not qualified at all I wanted to offer anything I could.

Firstly, I want to say that what you’re experiencing is /common./ Not “good” or “normal”-this is obviously impacting you in a way that makes it difficult to function-but what you’re feeling A LOT of people are feeling as well. You’re not alone feeling in feeling this way. Not the same root cause (mine is having physical health and comorbid mental health&trauma affecting my ability to be a financially independent adult), but my therapist has been working on techniques to calm myself before my symptoms get into a full attack. Basically, learning how to deal with chemical or thought spiraling (I disassociate to varying degrees so actual spiraling inner thoughts is pretty rare for me; I “hear enemy or boss music without music” instead and have to untense, work on my breathing (stop holding it/deep breathing) and make myself notice my surroundings (IF I’m not overstimulated. If I am then “sky&trees” and quiet works better since sound (and others’ emotions) overstimulates me, which makes my skin/muscles/nerves hypersensitive. (Internal or what my body feels like mindfulness techniques do NOT work for me-those can send me into a classic vs dissociative spiral.) Gently repeating a mantra of “I’m safe, I’m okay” (and hugging a cat that’s checking up on me LOL) also helps when I’m too overstimulated for Senses Grounding to work until my nerves stop firing and turning my vision “sparkly white edges and greyed out colors” But yeah. Georgia’s mentioned in some of her videos how Calm Breathing and Calming Mantras (like Pepa’s “Clear Skies, Clear Skies”) can help trick our brains into not flooding us with stress hormones. Then for me “okay so what can I do” helps for feeling like I have a bit of control not necessarily over my situation, but it feels like carving stairsteps to eventually climb out. But if that causes a panic (usually “I shoulds/why can’t I like everyone else” etc) then it’s time to distract/redirect. But a big one for me is just repeatedly accepting “this is how things are.” Not in a Gloom&Doom sorta way, but closer to setting it aside-carrying it isn’t helping me or anyone else. And like airliners doing the passengers’ oxygen mask training before each take off, you can’t help someone else if you’re struggling to breathe (although someone who is Trained and/or Okay can certainly help you get your “oxygen mask on”. As an internet stranger the best I can do is “read the manual” and explain my working-understanding.) And therapy /can/ help. But I’ll be blunt: it took reaching rock bottom and fully financially dependent on my parents as an adult and therefore qualifying for medicaid with my Really Bad Income ($0 🥲) before I /finally/ could begin to make therapy work. Why? Well…if I hadn’t aged out of my dad’s insurance (and cobra is astronomically expensive…so yeah. I had to just “make do” for a few years) I would not have had enough visits to even do therapy (dad’s company insurance only gave me 3-5 per year. You can’t do shit with that.) It also takes TIME beyond “therapy takes time to work” to find a therapist who’s actually qualified For You and works well For You. Sure you can try searching via your insurance’s site or Psychology Today (they allow you to filter by issues/specialty, insurance, and location/if telehealth is offered) or your local government’s site, but brace for it being trial&error (and if you can afford that. Which absolutely SUCKS.) But if you honestly cannot-check out Georgia’s Dow’s and Mended Light’s video library. Both channels have general therapy videos because access to therapy (and a fitting therapist) *is* such an epidemical problem (that literally doesn’t make sense-therapists are not wealthy in the way many medical doctors are, insurance is idiotic, and late-stage capitalism doesn’t pay really anyone enough to seek help unless they’re very, very lucky and have Actually Good insurance, have good medicaid, or they are Actually Upper Middle Class or wealthier.) Not to drop a bunch of Doom on you-personally I just really, really wish someone had been candid with me years ago verses muddling through on my own until I “qualified” for actual help. Biggest hugs (if hugs are your cuppa tea; if not, whatever’s the most comforting instead) and best of luck. You can survive this. Proof being you’re still alive and breathing. And for now that is enough. Take a breath. Right now, in this moment, you are okay, you are doing just fine. The rest can come later.

A couple years ago I was in this classroom for a test. And I remember sitting next to a giant teddy bear. The ones the size of a human child. And I felt really sad because I was feeling alone (I have to take tests like that because I'm dyslexic, I have extra accommodations and stuff). So I just leaned over and hugged it and I felt so much better immediately. It was like I wasn't entirely alone anymore and there was someone hugging me back when I felt so vulnerable. Definitely recommend those giant teddy bears. 👍

I was a weird Priya/Abby mix when I was a kid. I would pace for hours daydreaming and hop up and down when something slightly exciting happened and would start giggling for no reason but I had trouble expressing my emotions around others so I would become low energy and apathetic in social situations (friends houses, lessons ect.) And I would end up completely exhausted and frustrated after spending a couple hours with friends I genuinely liked and would frequently spend 4-5 minutes in the bathroom pacing at a friend's to let out all my emotions and energy and in curtain situations I would get to overwhelmed and have mental break down. There were only 2-3 people I was completely able to express my emotions and didn't get exhausted around

Thank YOU for your content. I'm learning so much, and I'll be honest, when I try to enact the takeaways from your videos, you've kind of become the defacto voice of kindness in my head when I try to remember to breathe and be kind to myself. It's because of you I learned what flooding means and that has made so much if my experience make so much sense. Ad for Abby, everything you've said about her applies to me, every single thing. I never try to be mean but people still complain (,somewhat fondly I think) that I have no filter, like when my roommate's friend bought cheap leather and I said it wouldn't last 2 years. Everyone said it wasn't fair because she was excited about it. I didn't think it would be a downer. I am exceedingly hyperactive and actually struggle to make time to peer even though my desk is 2 feet from my bathroom when I get going. Maybe a 25 year old shouldn't be an Abby, lmao. Thank you so much for creating this content! I even used your Curiosity Stream link to get Nebula! I always believe in unabashedly telling people the nice things you think so thank you! Your content is so compassionate and you are also very pretty! U live your dedicated cosplays in your videos as well. Thank you Georgia!

I was hoping you were going to cover Abby. She is just a ball of energy unleashed. ^_^ One RU-vid video pointed out a number of her visual storytelling moments. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_C-NGGqH02k.html I wished you covered a few other things. Abby tends to switch to her native tongue when she hits her emotional peak (the hallway intro, the "what the heck is Toledo" moment, and when she sees Tae at the concert). Her expression while making the merch shows she does not like repetitive, tedious work. Her Cheshire cat grin when Mei Mei stands up to her kaiju-sized mother. Even the besties moments when they know Priya is bi and when Tyler is a 4-Townie. No judgment or bullying. They just accept him as part of the collective. God, this movie is pure joy.

Just looking at their expressions while they walk, you can see Abby is on the prowl, she's making sure nobody takes advantage of her friend in a vulnerable moment. While Mei is frantic and scrambling, Abby is just scowling into the distance until her attention is needed. She's giving off the "don't mess with me rn" attitude that Mei is too frantic to give in the moment. She and pryah (spelling?) are the shields while they walk through the hall

Georgia, can you do a video about the Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa situation from the FF7 remake? I'd be fascinated to hear your take on it, especially if you are coming at it with fresh eyes with no knowledge of what these characters went through and did in the original. I don't know how feasible that is without you playing through it though, as it isn't just a movie you can watch unless you watched someone do a playthrough, but I have no idea how many hours that would take. But these characters are well beloved and also create awesome cosplay opportunities. :)

@@GeorgiaDow I'll be eagerly awaiting. The original game literally traumatized an entire generation of kids. Watching some people play the remake as adults on twitch, so many of them break down into tears at certain points just from the memories of what is to come. It is amazing to see. Unfortunately the remake is only the first snippet of the old game, I think there are going to be 2 (or more) games to fit in the rest of the original story into it. Just hearing a particular song from that game just about brings tears to my eyes.

Only recently got to see Turning Red on DVD. I thought Mei Mei's three friends were the personified aspects of her own personality. Abby is the hyper-active, highly emotional side. Pryia is the super-cool and almost unemotional side. While Miriam is the rational, caring side. Mei Mei must deal with all those things -- plus her Red Panda curse/blessing. Great movie! Loved it.

Great video! I love Abby so much, there really is quite a bit to her. I feel like Miriam would be an interesting character to talk about. She feels like the big sister of the group. She's laid back and silly, but can be serious and sincere when she needs to be. She's also very nurturing and supportive, especially with Mei. I get the sense that she's Mei's BEST best friend. The one that will be a lifelong friend. It might also be interesting to speculate on why it is that Ming dislikes Miriam specifically. I also think Tyler might be worth discussing. He's a bully character, but it feels like there's more too him. One thing I noticed is how different he acts when he's out in public vs when he's more private. At school, he's very loud, obnoxious, and in your face. When he's on his own or talking one-on-one, his body language is more withdrawn and he's a lot angrier. I think deep down, he's a very insecure kid who's unable to make friends, and that frustrates him.
