The Terror Birds that Seriema are the descendants of were absolutely INSANE predators. They were birds that gave up flight to instead run like ostriches and emus, but they had much larger heads and beaks, which they would repeatedly slam into their prey's spine and even their SKULLS in order to kill them. They used to be exclusive to South America, but when the Isthmus of Panama formed, they headed north into North America. But this created problems for them, because now they were competing with other apex predators like wolves and sabre-tooth cats. And this competition from rival predators is what ultimately led to their extinction.
There were however large and successful terror birds even past the interchange. Titanis was an apex predator and co-existed with placental mammals, only really going extinct because of climate shifts
Correction: Seriemas are relatives of the extinct Terror Birds, not their descendants. They are grouped together as part of the larger order Cariamiformes. Also, fun fact: The Phorusrhacids (Terror Birds) are not the only giant predatory birds the Cariamiformes produced, there's also another family of giant avian predators closely to the Terror Birds called Bathornithidae that thrived in North America for millions of years throughout the Eocene and part of the Miocene.
Actually if i remember right there was an incident where a harpy attacked a bbc filmer, but it was because the they were trying to set a camera up close to the nest
The ability of owls to fly almost completely silently is a pretty scary talent, but it's not an unbeatable one. I only found this out pretty recently, but if you're a BAT, you have a pretty good chance of escaping an owl, because just because you can fly without making any noise whatsoever, it doesn't mean you're invisible to a bat's sense of echolocation.
@ZmeiTheDarkdragon They are actually sunning themselves, using the UV rays and the suns heat to kill parasites & bacteria that are on their skin and feathers. They also do this to warm them selves with the suns heat, and to dry themselves, if ever their feathers get wet.
IIRC, vultures (and probably other birds) may spread their wings to sanitize them in sunlight. Similar function as those that fan their feathers out to dry; it's good for vultures to try and clean themselves up after going through rotting meat for a living.
