Steve Lukather, born Steven Lee Lukather on October 21, 1957, is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, arranger, and record producer. He is best known as the sole continuous founding member of the rock band Toto. Lukather’s reputation as a skilled guitarist led to extensive session work beginning in the 1970s. He has recorded guitar tracks for over 1,500 albums, spanning a wide range of artists and genres. Lukather has also contributed to albums and hit singles as a songwriter, arranger, and producer.
Notably, he played guitar on Boz Scaggs’ albums Down Two Then Left (1977) and Middle Man (1980), and was a prominent contributor to several studio albums by Michael Jackson, including the iconic album Thriller (1982). Lukather has released nine solo albums, with his latest, Bridges, released in June 2023.
Influenced by blues-rock guitarists like Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, as well as jazz fusion players such as Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin, Lukather is known for his “melodic and intense” playing style. He is also recognized for his efficiency in the studio, often recording tracks in one take with minimal sound processing. Lukather primarily plays a signature electric guitar manufactured by Ernie Ball Music Man, affectionately known as “Luke.” Additionally, he enjoys playing Yamaha and Ovation Adamas series acoustic-electric guitars.
Lukather’s musical journey began when his father bought him a Kay acoustic guitar and a copy of The Beatles’ album “Meet the Beatles” at the age of seven. The album had a profound impact on him, especially the guitar playing of George Harrison.
Excerpt from Steve''s Bio:
Versatile musician, guitarist, vocalist, composer, producer and arranger Steve Lukather was born in Los Angeles on October 21 in 1957. Before his father bought him a guitar (a simple Kay acoustic) and a copy of Meet the Beatles at the age of seven, Luke started to play drums and keyboards. "I love keyboards, I write all my songs on keyboards except for the real obvious 'burn' tunes. I find it much easier, you have all these great synth sounds and you play a C chord and it's sounds like God, and you start thinking melodies as opposed to chops." (Lukather, 1986).
The guitar and the Beatles album changed the life of the young boy. "Just the sound of it overcame my whole soul, if you want to call it that. I knew that's what I wanted to do. I remember George Harrison played a solo in I saw her standing there and just the sound of the guitar bending and the reverb struck a nerve inside of me." (Lukather, 1993).
