How could you not mention that he cost West Virginia its only shot in a national championship game by missing two field goals against unranked 4-7 Pitt!
@SwagLikeOhio1803 It's always the people who failed algebra 1 who think they're geniuses. Hey, it has nothing to do with the amount of time he puts into it, and it certainly doesn't come down to an hourly rate. The video was talking about Pat leaving the NFL to pursue media. Both of these careers, working in football or in media, require your whole commitment. It is not a question of when you are able to clock out. He left his NFL career to pursue media which led to him signing a more lucrative contract than any punter has ever signed in the league. The highest paid NFL punter right now is making about $3.7M per year on a $14.7M contract. Pat will make an average of $17M per year on his $85M contract. Do you think he works as hard now as he did as an athlete? I think it's an apples to oranges comparison, but looking at the money, it's obvious he's making more in media. I normally wouldn't reply at all but I haven't seen such brazen, confident stupidity directed right at me in a long time. Love the self-proclaimed "intellectual" bit. This is like bad trolling straight out of 2007 forums.
@SwagLikeOhio1803 first half of your comment was pretty on point. The second half you sound like a complete tool. "Intellectuals" lmao please tell me this is a joke.
@Luke-vk5xr I think he only recovered one himself because the Texans lined up weird and left the middle of the field empty. That said that particular season I think he had like 6 total onside kicks recovered by his team.
Yea I immediately went to the comments thinking they would be from years ago lol. How in the fuck did he not include his solo onside kick recovery?!?!?!?
that knee surgery that made him miss the pro bowl was a wake up call. he realized as soon as that happens off to the journeyman life. might as well do something hes good at and start talking. Good podcast, Great punter, Amazing guy.
I met Pat one time at Gillette Stadium. He was walking down a hallway and I walked right by him and said hello and he was so freaking cool. Just acted like a normal dude. Shook his hand. Told him love watching his channel. Dude was super nice.
The best things on Pats timing was, that due to that the Colts were able to run with Sanchez who, before his torn acl, seem like a similar good punter and hopefully comes back strong this year. He made the right desicion for him, his future and also the Colts punting future.
It’s guys like McAfee who inspired me to keep kicking and punting. I play amateur/semi pro football in my mid 30s and part of the kicking/punting squad.
As a colts fan and newer football fan, Pat made me understand and appreciate what a good punter could actually do for your team. He was a legit weapon for the colts for a few years there. Still the best I’ve ever seen IMO
“Jury’s still out”😂😂😂 he just signed a nine figure deal with ESPN like a month ago and even without it has been one of the most successful sports podcasts in the world, I think it’s pretty clear he made the right call
How do we not have a Punter Rating that takes into account how many yards remaining? Like if you have a conservative coach that punts from the 40, you're not gonna have many yards. And if your offense stinks and you're punting from the 30 all the time, that's plenty of space to boom punts in to.
I think Pat makes it to the HOF. Not only did he play the punter position in a unique way and have success with it, he's continued to grow the reach of the game with his show. Punters get in for literally being a decent punter.
He won't. He has zero chance of getting in as a punter. He's said it himself, there are so many guys who should get in before him, and most of them won't either. Considering his trajectory now, he might make it in one day as a media guy. But that's decades down the road.
The funniest part of it all, is he really wasn't that good of a punter in college. He was more known for his FG's. He even talked about how he had to "learn to punt" after he was drafted. Then he had to learn to hold.
@@TV-fv1ihHis missed kicks weren't the sole reason. Rich Rod called the worst offensive game of his tenure at WVU that game. I remember Pat White looking at the sideline with his palms up in the air looking like "WTF are you doing?"
Well with the new rules implemented by the NFL I don’t think we will ever see a punter who can impact the game the way Pat did and that kinda sucks because it’s one of the most underrated aspects of the game!
I think you are confusing punts with kickoffs they have made rule changes on kickoffs but I haven't heard of any rule changes on punts unless they made some new rule this off season that I am not aware of but I don't think so
When you obtain retirement money, why stay in the game until you get crippled? Far better to retire while you can still walk and enjoy a pain free life.
only reason is because you truly love playing the game, id wager people like Manning, Farve, Brady, Janikowski, Anderson (26 fuckin years), vinatari... just really loved what they did. I suppose its similar to people in the military, you get used to the routine of it all and when the routine is broken and gone...life feels...weird; what do you do now? all you have known is football, whats next, where do you go? Pat had an idea of what he wanted to do that was greater than punting and playing; and no longer needing to possibly hurt his knee probably did it. But there are several who just loved the game enough to keep on going, Pat just wasnt one of them /shrug
He has said himself that his body was starting to wear down...so he was not in his prime anymore. He was facing more knee surgeries and rehabs, and he was ready to move on to his next career.
9:50 "What other punter ... has done stand-up comedy?" Well, there was Jim Arnold, Lions punter from the eighties. He didn't endear himself to his team-mates because he made fun of the team's performance (this was at a time when the Lions were garbage - no shock there). He'd open his act with, "I'm Jim Arnold and I punt for the Lions. Quite often."
*Shocked North America. The rest of the world don't care that much for american football. With that said, Swede here, and gotta love them hits McAfee sometimes put in from way back!
A bit overdone but fun to watch! He was a character and a cent to good punter with the occasional flash of great. Like most punters. However, his grit, personality and tackling made him stand out.
Bid this video was made in August 2023 AND you're not sure if his show will take off????? Before he joined ESPN, the year before he got $129 MILLION. ESPN is without a doubt paying him more... That's quarterback and receiver money. PUT SOME RESPECT ON HIS NAME
Pat said later he left basically because of conflict with the GM (Grigson). He was all but forced out. Indy has always loved Pat and always will...Grigson, not so much.
You forgot to bring up the fact that the Indy Special Teams was probably one of the worst in history during this stretch. The amount that went into the end zone
you totally ignored the amount of onside kicks he successfully completed in that one year. and i would say his podcast has become very successful. i dont follow podcasts but i do watch clips from his shows and they are very good
This didn't even show one of his best - the surprise onsides kick that he recovered. I have to assume the comment about his podcast was an attempt at a joke, because that led him to enormous success, not to mention a deal with ESPN.
Love the video….Pat highlights aren’t out there much! The jury’s still out if the podcast will go anywhere? Deal with FanDuel, now ESPN…I’d think he’s doing something with that podcast.
If I'm not mistaken , I think I remember Pat saying on a RU-vid podcast not his own, that he was suffering back pain that wasn't football related and decided that, Well I went to College for a reason other than football I think ,so he quit .
One man. One player. One punter. His name is pat who made it look sooooooo easy like walk in the park that you wanted to be punter so you tried it out then realized that you’re so terrible. The worse punter out in high school and you retired that early and respect Pat.
I respect his talent. I HATE the black muscle shirt thing. We get it. You work out. Whenever someone needs a hook or a schtick or a thing, it bugs me. It is hard to take a guy seriously who is always dressed like he just got done cutting his lawn. How about wearing some sleeves and just giving good comentary? I can hear the arguments...."But that is his thing! He is the black muscle shirt guy! Why does it bother you?" Let me clarify. It bothers me in the same way as people who say, "On fleek" bother me. It does not keep me up at night. It does not change my world view. I simply find it to be gimmicky. I hate gimmicks. And for those destined to assume I must be envious becaus I have noodle arms, nope. I work out too. Besides, in an industry of Ex NFL players, pretty much everyone has muscle. But they dont dress like they are headed out to put up a fence.
Jury is out on if his podcast will go anywhere??? Pretty sure it has taken off and been more successful than anyone could imagine. I would venture to say more people watch the Pat McAfee show than Sportscenter these days.
You forgot to mention... he retired cause he got sick of the then incompetent Colts GM Grigson. The same GM who didn't build a quality O-Line for Andrew Luck which drove Luck to never ending injuries that drove him to retire.
