These videos are fantastic. The fact that they are done in real time with a real person (not a trainer) and with a real puppy for the first time is so helpful. I have been doing a LOT of reading and listening to experts in preparation for getting our new puppy in the next couple of months. Those create a really great framework and lay out the theory, but watching Jamie work through it in real life is invaluable. For example, nothing I have looked at up to now has discussed the value of a pen outside for potty training. But after watching this video it makes perfect sense...separate the leash training and the potty training. Puppy training has lots of simultaneous moving parts and, unlike most training videos, these tell you how to deal with that. Thanks to Jamie for being such a good sport, because I learn so much more from his mistakes than I do from watching some trainer do it flawlessly.
Aww.... thanks Ellen, I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying these videos. We had a lot of fun making them and they helped us figure out some things we needed to be clearer about in our content. It sounds like you are going to be very well prepared when you get your new pup. We're actually working on a new puppy course right now for Dunbar Academy, something even more organized and comprehensive, we're hoping to have it out by December so stay tuned! - Jamie
Question here: we were told that our pup shouldn’t go outside for a few months and till he has all his shots. Is that correct? If so, how would we better train him with the pee pads inside for now? Thank you for the videos!
The important thing is that your puppy should not go anywhere they might encounter urine or feces from a sick dog. Usually, this means outdoor public places. A private, fenced yard should be fine, if you know the only dogs who have been there are healthy and vaccinated. Training a puppy to use pee pads first, and then trying to switch to pottying outside can be much harder than teaching them to potty outside from the very beginning. -Jamie
