During the mid-60’s at Stockport Art College, The Purple Gang formed as a jug band. With their distinctive blend of folk instruments and catchy tunes, they caught the attention of Transatlantic Records and producer Joe Boyd, rubbing shoulders with legends such as The Pink Floyd and The Beatles. Their hit single "Granny Takes a Trip" gained immense popularity until it faced a BBC ban from the airwaves.
In 2000, Joe Beard reformed the band with new members. As a postscript to his career, he secured a Number 1 Radio Chart hit in Budapest with a song about 1960s Stockport, and amazingly knocked Britney Spears off the top spot.
