In 1972 Nixon won a landslide re-election victory getting c.61% of the popular vote and winning 49 of the 50 States. 520 electoral college votes to McGovern's 17. Unheard of today. Nixon's winning margin of almost 18 million votes is the highest in history. He was, evidently, largely considered to be a great president at that point after his first term achievements, prior to Watergate.
Ya know, I don’t really care for Nixon as a person, although I admire his tenacity as president in his policies. This is definitely one of the most humbling and eye opening things I’ve heard any man say. Wow. I’m so glad I came across this.

Richard Nixon had a very fine character and was a Great man. But great men and women (like the rest of us) also make mistakes. The most importsnt thing is to admit them and be sorry and not become hollowed and cotrolled by Pride. It makes you live in tension and unbalance. Nixon apologised and regretted watergate deeply. To say that he doesnt a have a vreat charscter because of one mistake that he really apologised for and regretted while over shadowing all the good that he ever did and continues to do,is just shallow beyond recognition with no reason to believe so.

I liked Nixon - the whole era was exciting - a great time of change, prosperity, turmoil and advancement of technology's! if people could start to see things in a more positive loving light. But through conditioning via media, film and tv , since that time, has embedded a darker view on the real world in which we live (do you still hear the sound of a bird call and say I love that) nature is not influenced by thought it just continues as it was created, perfect - be happy enjoy what is real !!
1968, was one of my best years. A lot of growing and development. It was a big game changer. I never met Richard Milhouse Nixon but , I have met people who knew him, and they all said he was not a bad man and that the media was relentless in their dislike for Nixon…… It was a Democrat media and still,to this day, is.
i loved him I was in a park when he resigned there was a woman in her car weeping listening to his speech the plates on the car were from California. In our home it was a day of mourning.Rest in peace Mr President
I've watched this clip many times and it's inspirational. However, if you're so fickle to be swayed by a motivational speech then you'd fall for all the political sweet talkers. No speech on the purpose of life can justify the crimes he committed.

The media didn't make him out to be anything other than what he already was. He was a brilliant, experienced, deeply flawed, and tragic individual. That doesn't diminish what he said here but like many of us he was very complex.
I've been watching a ton of material on past presidents, particularly Nixon. I like hearing the little anecdotes about him retreating to his office, late at night, armed with only a pen and a yellow legal pad to try and scratch out the day's hurdles. Sometimes even to try and better comprehend why he was the way that he was. I wish clips like this one had a more prominent place in his legacy.

I visited the Nixon presidential library in Yerba Buena, which has the house he grew up in on the grounds. It is a spare, small house, only a step above a shack. I gained a greater appreciation his looking at the world as one of struggle, certainly in contrast to those from privileged backgrounds he dealt with and politics. But this was also the source of perhaps his greatest weakness, a kind of paranoia that the world was out to get him. The irony is that despite there being no real doubt of his re-election in 1972 he was brought down by a totally unnecessary scheme carried out by his associates. I’m not sure if in retrospect he was able to see the absurdity of his presidency undone by a political scandal that he could have survived had he refused to engage in any conversation about covering up the crimes of his underlings.

The context of Nixon's remarks on the purpose of life was the fact that he was forced into early retirement from the Presidency. He had not anticipated retiring before early 1977, so his early retirement in 1974 because of the prospect of impeachment came as a shock to his system. He had enough money from his investments and a comfortable pension from his time in office to enable him to live quite comfortably as a retired person - and he did - but he wanted to be much more active than he was and needed to have some clear purpose for the rest of his life. Instead, Nixon was (rightly) regarded by most as a pariah to the end of his days and he was thus prevented from carrying on the kind of active life that most ex-Presidents lead. In that regard, I think he he was almost fully punished for his sins and endured a fate almost as bad as imprisonment would otherwise have been.
He didn't have that much money after he resigned. In fact, he was so poor in the couple of years after his presidency that he had to borrow money form Julie and David (read "Being Nixon" by Evan Thomas).
I know this is late but could u care to explain why? Im just curious cuz for me i believe he failed democracy, which is a system i strongly believe in despite its inherent flaws, by spying on the democrats which would probably come off as invasion into privacy. Furthermore, if he were so good, would he had not won the election with his own abilities? Why use such underhanded tactics? I personally think u are letting ur infatuation with this man as an inspiration conflict with ur judgement but do feel free to convince me with ur arguement against this and in no way am i trying to insult u but just trying to understand why you think what he did would justify the crimes he committed.

"It's not the crime, it's the cover up !" The reason that became their mantra was because Nixon had absolutely NOTHING to do with the Watergate break in. He had no idea it was going, had happened, and had never directed anyone or anything to that matter. It was JOHN DEAN - now a demonrat hero... who did it. Nixon was said to have "covered it up". I never investigated that part of the demonrats charge, but would not be surprised if it was a total lie, too. What's interesting is what he may have really been in trouble with the establishment for doing. I don't think we'll ever find that out. If someone knows and has exposed it, it is a very obscure truth.
I love president Nixon, he was a great president and did a much better job than Kennedy. I was devastated when he resigned, what happened was nothing and I wish he had stood his ground and stayed in the presidency.
I don't think any of us can or should discount the wrong things Nixon did. He did them. We should however not forget some of the good he did, and not keep him in the same as line as our other presidents who did corrupt things (such as Johnson) and treat him as if he was an anomaly. It's possible to see someone in the entirety of what they did and who they were. Nixon is no different.
I have a lot of respect for Nixon. Such a shame Watergate ruined his legacy. He’s one of the best presidents we’ve despite some mistakes he made during his tenure. He was a beast at foreign policy that will always inspire me

sue barker you make some great points. Our nation stopped nominating and electing experienced and intelligent presidents that had substance. This all began to change in the last 30 to 35 years. I was watching some RU-vid videos of Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman, ect. and the way they all focused on substance of issues and the urgency to ensure our national security during the Cold War. In one of the videos, JFK is talking to Eisenhower asking him for his advise and thoughts on the best response to Russia during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He listened to IKE and they both ended up agreeing on the strategy that Kennedy was using to defuse the crisis. It was just amazing to see the current President deferring to the previous President who had been Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and the respect and admiration that they both had for each other. It's very shameful that our politics today have gotten so toxic that even former Presidents no long call on one another in times of crisis. The partisan politics today combined with the constant 24/7 news cycle and social media bombardment has deeply harmed our nation and national security. All of us as citizens should be appalled that our political leaders do not have the courage or common sense to put the nation first especially when it comes to national security.

Remember, Nixon said this when he was out of office. Profound, yes, but much easier to do than when you are in power (e.g. Clinton said he could do more AFTER being President than when he WAS President)

All of the bad things about Nixon were real--they're as documented, from his own mouth, as anything in the historical record. But he was, by far, our most interesting president. Lincoln was merely depressed. Nixon was everything.
He was a deeply, deeply flawed man, with a deeply flawed legacy, he was like all of us at our worst, and yet there he was in the Oval Office, trying to rise above himself, failing nonetheless. He was his own worst enemy, and he paid the price as a pretty bad President, he lost his struggle. Edit: He was a bad person for actions but you have to look deeper to get a hold of his complexity and reasoning behind it.
@@davida2359 amen you summed up President Nixon perfectly ! He was a brilliant man, perhaps one of the three most intelligent Presidents to ever serve in office. He seemed insecure and obviously developed mindset that the media and the eastern intellectuals were out to get him. Well he was correct in that assessment, however he also held onto grudges and was terrified that Ted Kennedy would run against him in 1972. Also as part of the Watergate scandal the Committee to Reelect the President stole the medical files from one of the democratric presidential contenders (Senator Eugene McCarthy or Sen. Muskie. As it were, he ended up running against the weakest candidate Sen. George McGovern, as he was considered too liberal for the nation at that point in time. One of the sad aspects of Watergate is that Nixon's 1972 re-election was pretty secure and he would have won over any of the Democrat candidates with a comfortable margin. even without the "dirty tricks" campaign. Nixon was brilliant on foreign policy and also initiated several domestic policies during his presidency that proved to be good for the nation. Thus if Nixon could have just focused on governing and ignoring his enemies he likely would have ended up as one of our better presidents.
He is one of the smartest presidents, yes, but I don't think he ever worked a manual labor job such as in a factory, where you have to do the same thing over and over, as fast as you can, 40 hours a week for 40-50 years. My point is that if you have a tedious job which has no challenge other than not killing yourself every workday morning to avoid one more day of that, you would understand how being rich (from say winning the lottery) would never get tiresome for them.

Completely refuses to admit that he did wrong, but OTOH doesn't express resentment or desire for revenge at all -- not even a little, in choice of words, tone of voice, or body language. A complex personality! And he's no Trump -- not even close, in terms of character and motivation and self-centeredness. What we're facing now is 1000 times more frightening.
My only conflict with President Nixon lies in the fact that he was responsible for the death of millions of innocent people in Vietnam and Cambodia. But who knows what kind of pressure he was under at that time, we can only guess. But, other than that..he comes across as an intelligent and genuine person. I feel a great deal of connection to him.

So they are unhappy while people serving in the military, being unemployed, working crazy shifts etc are happy. Oh please, the "battle" is a reality to be overcomed. Peace is the purpose, not the struggle.
