Trying to decide what to buy for Plex streaming I want to stream atleast 2x4k movies at the sametime. local. its between qnas or synology. but I hear many bad things about qnap with discounts software issues. Either QNAP TS-653D-8G or DS1621+ I could always buy m1 mac mini to stream more movies and for transcoding. can someone help me decide?

Forget that single switch - that thing does not feature any LAG/LACP... They do offer other more feature-full managed switches but this one is rather lacking... You should also check up the Austor Lockerstor line - they've got the 2x2.5GbE+2xNVMe+J4125+HDMI+2/4xSATA units for the price that is nearly identical as the 2 and 4 bay x53d units from QNAP... Plus, you still need the PLEX pass to enable HW acceleration, so you're probably better with the QNAP streaming apps. Same for the Asustor though... Otherwise, it's software only encoding/decoding, and that takes its toll on the real performance...

@@emsbas1 I found, building with that was way easier and cheaper than going with a prebuilt or using Supermicro parts to build .
@Banner1986
@Banner1986 3 года назад
@@marcesw35 its definitely cheaper, and makes doing various things cheaper by the fact that you can basically treat it like any other pc of that era (wrt pcie) - as it's just "a server", you can plug in any second hand network, usb, video, or whatever other cards you want in it as long as they physically fit and be on your way. Heck, I've got a 2070 from HP (stripped from a dead Omen gaming rig), some intel nvme add in cards, an LSI HBA, and some no name usb 3.1 card in mine... However, there are just a ton of reasons to *not* do this and instead go for something like the qnap imo. Its quiet enough (without any tinkering needed) to be placed anywhere, uses less power by orders of magnitude (could honestly pay for itself over time if your electricity rates are high), and so much more compact that it could be set down wherever you want without drawing massive attention. Not to mention, its warranted; if something fails, you're not stuck hunting Ebay for something you hope will work. Of course, I have no exp with qnap's support team and processes/policies, but any support is (usually lol) better than none. I've gotten to the point that I've outgrown my 720xd and am migrating to a couple "custome/DIY" systems im building around xeon golds now, with the reasons above playing a pretty massive part in my rationale for doing so. Not the entire reason (needed more compute, as well as high availability), but a very significant portion of it.
@marcesw35
@marcesw35 3 года назад
@@Banner1986 You make a good point for the compact of the Qnap. I have 1 of them and 2 buffalo NASes at this time that is why I went build my own. I am building a new home and this new NAS be 1 of 2 for my smart home build. I wanted to see if a custom build would do better and more flexibility for my situation. Don't get me wrong I have had my Qnap and buffalo's for a while and they served me well but now they don't meet my needs. I figured I could build my own for what a new one to replace what I have now and have a greater ability to expand. For the general consumer, I think the store-bought NAS like these is good but as a pro-consumer, they are a bit lacking. As the 10gig market becomes more available and standard I feel the server is a better way to go. For running a plex server I use a PowerEdge R610 that is just as beefy as my new NAS and the performance difference is night and day, but that is from a pro-consumer point of view. But that's another conversation for another time.

Planning on getting the 6 disk edition to simply my PLEX server (running on a NUC i5 (gen 4 dual core), and a readynas 16TB in RAID10 (4x8TB). I’m also running 2xDS216 synology NAS, one for my download drives (media, emulators, etc.) and one for my photography/video. Too much clutter, so I’m going 1 single NAS now 6x18TB in RAID10 with dual QLC nvme 500GB ssd’s (wd blue’s) and a single 10gbt rj45 AIB. And if the ssd’s aren’t enough, I’m hoping by upgrading to 16GB of ram will speed up simultaneous tasks (PLEX and data transfers) the only bottleneck would be my internal drives… hopefully… goal is to use it so it’ll feel as fast as my internal drives.

1 GB networking was actually invented on July 1, 1826. And when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson learned of it on July 4, 1826, they both died, each uttering their last word that the other "still lives". But it was still preceded by Benjamin Franklin's use of a lightning rod to demonstrate the world's first wireless transmission.

Just finished watching the video and I am intrigued on using the 2.5 gb speeds. So I have a couple of questions and forgive me if you already said it in the video but I did not see where you addressed it in your current setup but will be setting it up in the office. Question #1 you got the 2.5 gb speed from the QNAP did you have it plugged into one of your 1gb switches or did you plug it into a 10gb switch(I know you said non of your 10 gb switches don't bump down to 2.5 or 5.0gb. So I have 2 Synology switches a 10gb and 1gb, so I would have to set it up on the 1gb switch unless I purchased QNAP 2.5-10gb switch and would the QNAP switch need to have an uplink to your 10gb switch? thanks for the video, really enjoyed it.

If your switches can not do 2.5Gb, they will default to 1G. this is why integrating this new switch into my beefy 10g setup is not practical. But, if you didnt have 10g....It would be an upgrade.

I'm happy to spend more, even for some performance that I may not use, to give me a bit more future proofing. Is this pretty much the upper end QNAP for that or is there a model above this that I should be considering ?

IIRC, Plex on a typical QNAP NAS will work over the HDMI port if you use the older version from the Plex App Store. If you update to the latest version directly from Plex then you won’t have a client version to run over the HDMI port.

Speaking of Seagate drives. This week I did get back to RMA shucked drives that they be begrudgingly let me send in. The problem was is that the two drives died within a week of each other that were purchased at the same time only a year ago. That doesn't say very much for their longevity hopefully the new ones will do better. but since I've already replaced them with 14 terabyte drives from Western digital shucked of course. They will be relegated to very cold backups.

*2.5gb/sec a bottle neck transferring between two SATA SSDs and barely enough even for fast spinning rust *You can get new server grade 10gb cards for $US80-130 (and second hand stuff for a fraction of that). *Power consumption of newer 10gb cards is much better that earlier ones ....2.5gb just seems like an unnecessary stop on the way to 10gb.
@robertt9342
@robertt9342 3 года назад
Right, it's not really for SSDs, and it's fine for spinning rust. You don't have to go through the hoops of getting used or paying hundreds of dollars premium to get a 10gig setup. 10gig is better, and If you need 10gig, 2.5 isn't really an option anyways. However 2.5 isn't bad for most people's usage. Kinda surprised 5gig isn't a standard being pushed, but I guess going from 1 to 2.5gig is much easier to move to for manufacturers.

I really have three network styles/sections: Wired Fast/bulk (50-200gb transfers normal, lots of client/server)... SFP+ preferred -NAS -Virtualisation -Workstations -Backbone (connect to other segments) -Router Wired underpowered devices (wired for reliability, never max 1 gb) -Printers -Smart TV Wireless (Currently wifi 5, upgrade to wifi 6e when there’s an AP with wired multi gig backhaul) -Mobile (100gb transfers not uncommon when loading/unloading 4K video) -Visiting Mac users (to be mocked and migrated to Linux) As soon as I realised that I: -ditched the idea of trying to set a network-wide minimum. -was freed up from the SFP+/RJ45 dilemma as I didn’t need the printer and the same switch. -Didn’t need a ton of ports on the 10gb part (e.g. mikrotik 4x10gb+1x1gb switch is currently ~$US116.. although I bought the 8 port version for future proofness )

If it's anything decent, this could be a home run, and I'd likely end up picking up 4 of them to replace the current backup systems for my extended family (I've somehow defaulted to the "family tech support" for both my and my wifes parents and siblings lol)
@Banner1986
@Banner1986 3 года назад
Oh, and if you have a way to monitor its power consumption (while using QuTS), knowing the avg and peak draw you see over time would be fantastic! Since you're using this for work, and especially when being used as a surveillance system with facial rec where the disks are always 100% active and the CPU has to watch to process faces constantly), I feel like this is ideal for getting real world data that better matches what most would use it for (as opposed to just idle watts and peak under torture testing)

For the need here (4 of them, for remote family), I'd rather go with something like this and pay just a little more - if something fails, its warranted and I can do a video call to walk them through the physical replacement, no cost, and no work for me in setup.
