My dears, as per the plan, Margaret (Vanessa Kirby) and Peter (Ben Miles) were to spend their two-year waiting period in separate countries to downplay their affair, but it unexpectedly makes front-page news, resulting in a tearful confrontation with Elizabeth (Claire Foy).

My dears, this is how Margaret seeks the Queen's permission to marry Peter during dinner: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mDC7YKNGE4I.html

I wonder if the Queen ever had any regrets with how strict she was with her sister considering how much a disappointment her sons the cheater & the perv were with their behavior. Was hurting her sister really worth it? Yes yes I know there were rules and I feel as though she bent the rules for the wrong family members.

She may have decided to go easier on Charles because she regretted not going easier on Margaret.

Most likely she had no regrets because she wasn't aware of the real harm she had inflicted upon her sister: she just thought she had done her duty without the slightest care for her own family. There would have been ways of circumventing those silly rules nobody but the most conservative courtiers and advisors cared about, but she chose not to bother the establishment and sacrifice her sister for her own peace. On the other hand, she was young and very insecure, and the lack of a proper academic education left her vulnerable in front of all those grey-haired Eton and Oxford educated men.

It’s a shame because I feel like Elizabeth through her reign made the expectations for the wrong people, as you said, and the right people were denied. The suffering it caused hurt Elizabeth’s reign at different points.

Close sources said that she deeply regretted not supporting Margaret and the aftermath of it, which is the main reason she allowed Harry to marry Meghan, who was divorce and allow them to exit.

Keep in mind that: -Elizabeth’s family blamed her uncle’s abdication on her father’s early death (vs the cigarettes!) and she was ingrained with the importance of following protocols and rules - including religious rules. At this time, divorce was not accepted as it is today. -2 Queen Elizabeth was still young and learning the ropes. Her advisers were likely effective at guiding/manipulating her -3 This a movie! We really don’t know what people said in private conversations (unless books are written that reveal accurate info) -4 Lastly, Margaret could have waited and she could have given up royal status. There is a lot that is public knowledge of “wild” behaviors etc. But the show is great: wonderful acting and script - and gives us lots to think about. What would we do to marry the person we loved?

In reality, Margaret could have married Peter if she agreed to give up he royal privileges. She chose to keep her privileges and broke up with Peter.

The reality was she had to give up her place in the succession only. She wasn't going to be queen anyway. She just didn't want to marry him

I can never figure out why the family was so against Prince Phillip, he had more Royal blood in him than the Queen herself. His Mother was the Great Granddaughter of Queen Victoria (she was born at Windsor castle) her Aunt and uncle were the Emperor and Empress of Russia. Phillips grandfather was the King of Denmark and his uncle the King of Greece.. I have to say that’s a pretty good linage if you ask me..

Well, I think the fact that his sisters were married to German noblemen with Nazi affiliations had something to do with that. And he had no money or good manners (in their eyes).

He didn’t have money, he was born on a table, he wasn’t Church of England, his mother was Hessian (and mentally ill) , and his sisters married Nazis.
@welshwitch2126

Because his family was exiled. He was a prince with no country. His father was accused of treason, his mother had been committed to a mental institution, his aunt and uncle were deposed and horribly executed, and his sisters had married Germans who became Nazis. That’s a lot of scandal for one family, whether right or wrong. I’m sure they’d have rather had her marry a man from a “proper aristocratic family”. Turns out they were wrong and Elizabeth was right.

I strongly believe that if King George had not died so young. He would have allowed Peter and Margaret to marry and no one would have questioned it but because Elizabeth was young and a woman they saw her as weak and Malleable able to bend her to their whims

It’s possible that King George might have granted the wish of his “Joy”..but not a given. Elizabeth’s father was also a Constitutional stickler-QEII Got that as much from him and from her grandmother Queen Mary as she did from her advisors. I believe this truly was a matter of conscience for her, but there’s no way that she could’ve predicted that the marriages of three of her four kids would fall apart and this issue would crop up again. The King relied a great deal on Peter, But Townsend’s relationship with the King’s younger daughter might have been viewed as a betrayal of trust. It wasn’t just that an older man fell in love with the boss’s daughter or that PT was a commoner. He met Margaret when she was 14 and he was a 32-year-old married father. There is some question about when their romantic relationship began and it’s quite possible that Townsend was having physical contact with Margaret well he was still married and she was underage. Townsend was hustled out of Margaret’s orbit and posted to Brussels immediately after their relationship became public. Maybe Margaret’s elders feud him as a corrupting influence. I certainly find cause for reservations about his character and his motivations for having romantic designs on Margaret. But had the king lived to make this decision, you are right that the marriage in Scotland probably would’ve been allowed to take place. The question that remains is whether the king would have really gone for it. He had even more reason to be protective of Margaret then her sister had. But the king liked Peter very much so who knows.

Highly doubtful. In the 1950s, divorce was looked down upon. It was taboo. When I was a teen in the late 70s, it was still not fully accepted. King George wouldn't have wanted that for his "joy".

My parents were divorced in the early 90's and there was only one other family in the whole school who also had parents who were divorced. It was very rare for a long time, unless you had the money to pay for lawyers and settlements.

Yes those times were different compared to 80s and 90s and 2000s. So queen behaved accordingly with the time because that's what she knew.

The Queen was taken back by Peter's popularity during the Scotland trip with her. I think that sealed the deal. I'm sure the Queen knew it wasn't going to happen and maybe felt the separation would drive them apart without her having to tell her know.

I got the DVDs up to Season 5. Margaret was fabulous or is it Helena the wonderful one? Anyway, the King is as AH as the real one… A DIVORCED King married to a DIVORCED woman. No need to abdicate… or just like Henry VIII… the wife is dead…so he can re-marry?

True, but Camilla still had a living husband, and according to the Church of England she couldn't remarry him in their faith. However, as the senior royal whose opinion mattered the most, which Charles being the next in line, the late Queen gave her approval in 2005. Eventually, she allowed Camilla to have status to become the future queen consort.

You do know the General Synod changed the rules 5 years before they married due to huge increase in divorce in Britain (42% : in the US and Australia 50%)or alienate vast numbers. Your bigotry is showing and it is not a good look@@reginadoggett9921
