So the Queen was criticized for putting duty before family when raising Prince Charles and Princess Anne, but also critized for putting her grandchildren first when Diana, Princess of Wales died. It seems that for some people she just can't win.

I agree with you. I don't know how people think they're an expert on the queen calling her cold and selfish. Because she's not seeking pity whenever something bad happens and showing all her emotions!! She's a great example of Queen Lee behavior. I noticed this too.... They're obviously thinking of Charles initially and now the Cambridges. It's even a huge plot point in the Crown that they had to move from Clarence to Buckingham and that Philip was disappointed.

I really never can reconcile the fact that the nation expected her to perform her duties as Head of State, but have mercilessly criticized her for doing them. She is a very loving mother and her Mum was there to assist with Charles and Anne. There's no way she could have given all her attention to both. Many young people have to work when their children are young, but have more time to spend with their grandchildren. In this, Her Majesty was just like any other working Mum, but it was rarer back then. Elizabeth II is the most traveled Queen in the history of the UK. She forged the ties that bind the Commonwealth and really it had been her crown and glory throughout her reign. Had she chosen to stay at home to raise her children, she would have been castigated for negligence of duty similar to Queen Victoria, when she was in mourning and couldn't bring herself to return to business as usual after the loss of Prince Albert. These are people too. Add in the fact that she (QEII) is a bridge to the old Edwardian times, there was a cultural shift happening within and without the palace confines. Sometimes it's too easy to cast a glance at the past through today's lens.
I do not know why they emphasize the neglect of her children when in fact she has her mother and other relatives to take-over when she is working. Princess Anne was well brought-up and is a well-adjusted Adult. Why blame it on her when Prince Charles made the infantile decision to neglect his wife, Princess Diana, and carry-on pining on the other woman, Camilla, which inevitably destroyed the marriage before it even begun. Prince Charles should not blame it on her if he so lacks confidence in his character. It is so hard to see him marrying Camilla at last, but, life has to move on. I hope he will be a great king that will make Great Britain at its Commonwealth flourish more as his mother, Queen Elizabeth ll, worked hard to achieve.
Her serious sense of duty came from Queen Mary. They were temperamentally alike and she spent a great deal of time with her. He father was no less that utterly heroic. He was not raised to be king but dutifully took it on. I think that prince Charles will be just fine. He is equally committed.
David was a terrible king, Wallis often gets the blame, but he wanted out long before her. However, dont feel too bad for either of them, they were Nazi sympathizers (perhaps traitors) and they lived an opulent lifestyle without having to lift a finger.

I didn't feel bad for David either. Seems like he always wanted to be free to enjoy him self as Prince of Wales. And being king he wouldn't have that freedom. With what was seeing from videos and interviews I can't imagine what would have happened to the monarchy if they had become king and queen. There's seem to be more of a social and party scene. Sometimes the first born may not be the right person for the job. Their father certainly thought so. What a different world it would have been if the king had been a friend and Nazi sympathizer.
People seem to forget that everyone that marries into that family get treated like dirt, not Meghan level hatred, still. Prince Albert was treated with disdain and ridiculed for many years, now the British love “their love story”. Prince Phillip was treated the same. People forget that he ran off to Australia for months and was forced to come back. And let’s not talk about Diana who was more pedigreed and British than these bunch of Germans.
Exactly also Kate went through a lot a ridicule. Hounded by the paparazzi negative articles about her and even at paparazzi trying to get a picture up her skirt. Instead of whining about it she continued on and became an accepted and respected member of the family. Saying she and Megan were treated different they haven't bothered to look back at the beginning and see what Kate went through. And she went through it for a lot longer than Megan ever did. The difference is Kate didn't go camera whining about it and trying to make herself sound like a victim. Maybe she thought she was marrying into a life of luxury and servants and wasn't up to the working part.
I have come to respect and love Queen Elizabeth I I. When you follow media in my generation but to have grown up and see so much of her life and what all she has had to go through i can't imagine having a magnifying glass that large on everything i did and the lives not of just your blood but the countries blood and lives in the country and commonwealth on your hands. To be a face of a nation and thousands of years of tradition to uphold or do better than. It's a Hell of a role and she's played it as beautiful as she's known how. We have been talking for 3 decades how Diana felt fgs! Everything is not about Diana. And unlike Diana, whatever the Queen felt, she kept it to herself, she never bothered the public with complaints like Diana did
I respect her sense of duty a great deal. But I see her as a very uncaring, cold person who sees her family as no more than employees. No love and no warmth towards them.

I'm not a big fan of monarchy, especially those in Europe under whose reigns European countries colonized, raped, and plundered peoples in other parts of the world. However, I feel a little sympathy for those born into the institution who then come king or queen when it's a role that they do not want. Unlike politicians, it's not something they get to choose for themselves. For some monarchs and monarchs-to-be, that must be incredibly suffocating.
I don't know how she managed to cope with all this family and still do her job so well right into hersenior years and with just one man in her life right to the very end.
How did she choose the monarchy over Harry and Megan? She didn't kick them out of the family, she didn't exile them. She just said that they would no longer be senior members and stripped the titles. They chose to not be part of the monarchy, so why would they be entitled to all the frills with none of the obligations? Harry is still her grandson and I am sure she doesn't love him any less.

First off, they were NOT stripped of their titles, they are still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and are still HRH's, but cannot use HRH for commercial purposes. It was Harry and Meghan's decision to step down as senior members of the family, not the Queen's, that came from Harry and Meghan's own statement. I believe Meghan really wanted to become an active member of the RF, as evidenced by how many public engagements she did before and after they married, but the public's hatred and nasty comments about her caused them to make the decision they did.
She didn't strip them of nothing and they still have their titles. They just quit being working senior royals. Haha. Maybe know what you are talking about before commenting on what did or didn't happen. 😂😂😂
There are glaring errors in this - “Seven years into her reign..” - Prince Edward was born in 1964, when she had been Queen for 12 years!! I was under the distinct impression that the Queen knew nothing about Prince Andrew’s intended interview!

I think Prince Charles criticizing his upbringing is ok because of course our relationships change with our parents as we age....so the queen was probably cold and distant when they were children but built a better relationship as they grew
I watch ALL EU ROYALS newsreels. Edward and Sophie are the Queen's favorites, not Andrew. You see them, time and again, throughout the royals, representing her, and, England.
Everyone has a favorite in the family, but you still care. I wonder how she felt about Princess Beatrice's husband being an unwed dad. His son is part Asian as well. I'm glad she and Phillip were able to see all of their grown grandkids get married.

I never Understood why the Church of England don't allow divorced people to re-mary when it's creator divorced 2 times and maryed other 4 (tecnicaly they where an annulment not a divorece but it's basicly the same thing, and Also It woud not rime well)

The Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth has a significant influence on our Monarchy and has helped design our modern Monarchy. How lucky we are that she became our Queen! I chose being a teacher - a servant to society- because I feel her weight of responsibility.

It was always the way Kings and Queens were instructed to reign. Children were pawns to the power struggles, raised by others, having their own houseful away from court. It is a very backward idea of family. Thankfully, as time passed, many royal families have made changes to make a happy atmosphere for growing children. It helps that more couples were able to marry someone they respected and cared for than just be told -- this is who you will marry. The demands on the time is not something we can understand looking from afar.
A great doc!! I still feel that the way H and M absconded to Canada for their 6 week holiday turned “we aren’t returning to the UK” was horrid and cruel to the Queen. I have no doubt that M was of course the cause of all of that and she will continue to wreak her havoc upon the RF as long as she is alive (married or not to H). H made a terrible mistake by bringing that wretched woman into the Firm.
The Monarcjy is better off without them. Duchess Difficult has no respect for the monarchy yet wanted to be put BEFORE the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. How great and respected is she? Don't look at the places she reigns. Just look at the countries that ditched her as Head of State. The respect for her hasn't diminished with independence. She is still held in high regard in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Pakistan, Fiji and Malaysia and many more. A visit by HM to any of these places is the high point of diplomacy in that country for that year. A visit by the Queen is akin to a Papal visit. Look at her visit to Germany I think in 2006. If I really wanted to marry someone I wouldn't care if my children we not included in line to the throne. Logically you would assume more children would be born and put Margaret's children very far down anyways. So I think after waiting all those years she truly just didt want to marry him anymore.

My opinion the queen failed in something else. She gave Charles and Diana the orders to divorce, it should have included a directive to Charles to prepare to give way to William to be the next king. Hell, like the previous Prince of Wales, upon the queens death, he can take his regnal name, becomes King George VII (whatever he chooses, BUT before a coronation he should abdicate. Why the hell not. It’s 2020, and the queen is still going, god only knows how long this will continue. He could potentially be in his 80’s. Come on. What does he have to offer a whole new generation, he’s out of touch. If this monarchy is going to continue in lieu of a republic, William is its chance. William his far far far more loved than Charles. There is no pass to discuss. The law is primogeniture, it is inheritance. Oldest son preferred and now oldest just child from the most senior available line. Last King to try to snub some of his possible successors from rightful inheritance was Henry 8th, and he failed at that. So trying to bypass a living next in line heir is simply just out of the question.

That’s what I respect about the Queen. She always no matter what follows the rules that have been kept for hundreds of years. She was all about duty more than her family.

What a minute: the Princess Elizabeth made vows about her job however, Prince David/Edward prior to his taking the throne and never made any such vows. Did he make any when he was invested as Prince of Wales? No idea but he was just s child and no one really expected anything profound from him. But if he never took it upon himself to make vows, then he didn't choose his personal life over the Crown.

I think when people judge HM’s parenting, they need to take a step back and look at the parenting advice in the 60s, remember what the 70s were like, remember how she held Britain together during WW2, and most of all remember she DID have an important job to do as the UK QUEEN. There will never be another Queen or Monarch that will respect the rule of the Monarchy. She is one of a kind. Some of her family can never be as dedicated as she. Will see how William will be.
As head of the Church of England, the Queen missed the official part of Charles and Camilla’s wedding but did attend the blessing and hosted the reception. Since Anne and Tim married in the Church of Scotland - of which the Queen is not head - there was no conflict of interest on her part.
I believe she inherited her sense of duty, firstly, from George III. Edward VIII did not learn from the fine example set by King George V and Queen Mary. As Sovereign, you may sit at the very apex of the Constitution, at the height of national status and privilege, but your life BELONGS TO THE NATION, TO YOUR PEOPLE. God Save Her Britannic Majesty!
She has shown loyalty to her country and kept her commitment to the crown. Her people have treated her very badly. They never stop and think of the pain they cause her when they attack her family. The British press and people feel it is their right to treat her terribly and if they don’t think continually attacking someone in her family is not treating her terribly they are truly stupid or just as cruel as they appear to the rest of the world. This woman has been loyal to her country and kept her commitments.
