The Queen just saved Boris Johnson and Brexit! This mandate with its 31st October deadline makes it absolutely ironclad the opposition can't try to weasel out by putting extension after extension. @stevieinselby
@stevieinselby 4 года назад
Whereas the Republicans in the US get elected almost entirely on an manifesto of tax cuts, no gun control and locking up more black people, the UK electorate at least likes to pretend that it has more of a social conscience than that, so the Conservatives have to promise things like environmental responsibility and public spending, even though everyone who has been paying attention knows that those things will be scrapped immediately they win, and they will instantly go back to their usual policies of exploiting the workers and natural resources for their own enrichment. Worryingly, people still fall for it after all this time.
@altrag
@altrag 4 года назад
@@stevieinselby That's actually normal in most parts of the world. It's only in America where providing basic necessities is considered "communist." Things like universal health care are certainly considered on the left of center, but only barely so in most countries. America has spent the past several decades pushing their idea of "center" far, far off to the right as the Republicans continue to push for more and more conservative ideals and Democrats just capitulate because they don't understand that you can't strike a fair balance when you attempt to "compromise" before the argument has even begun -- that just gives your opponent that much more leeway. So yeah, if you're an American.. basically every other country's conservatives will seem "leftist" to you, because your baseline for comparison is horribly skewed. (Of course in the Trump era, "right wing" often no longer means "conservative" so much as it means "batshit crazy," so definitions may well be shifting in a completely new manner depending on how deeply Trump's "style" remains embedded in American politics after his departure from office.)

But what if they're correct and Eu law supercedes UK law. Then the Ben Act could be challenged in Eu courts. Also an Eu veto would prevent the Benn act from working. There is also a provision in UK convention that means that any sitting pm can't be coerced when making decisions on international treaties. That could be tested in courts too. The Benn act is the only chance that remainers have to keep us in the Eu. So I hope you're confident that it will work. As for prorogation. The courts stated it was unreasonable, unconstitutional and unlawful. But never said illegal. So Johnson didn't break the law, he breached modern convention. As has Bercow by meeting with a foreign power to discuss and attempt to manipulate UK domestic policy. Which is currently being investigated alongside complaints of bias.
@darriendastar3941

@@xylusirl1527 EU law doesn't supercede UK law. For any EU directive to become law in the UK, it has to be accepted by Parliament or the British government. The Benn Act doesn't keep us in the EU - it merely tries to force the prime minister to negotiate a deal (something that is in the best interests of every UK citizen). Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, met the leader of the European Parliament - which he has every right to do. And as we have representatives - duly elected - from Britain sitting in the European Parliament, I don't think you can call it a "foreign power". Frankly, you're failing at making your case. It can depend. In America, people fight against voter ID laws because it’s not unheard of for the very poor not to have “proper ID” and sometimes they can lack the documentation to even receive an ID. If this is the case, sorting it out can take a lot of money, thus in some folks eyes, voter ID laws act as a stealth poll tax. Dr. Sparrow LQ I get what you’re saying but, somehow the UK has insured the vote for 100 years, what’s the difference now? The reason it tends to be controversial is probably for two reasons. Generally countries or governments that have done this before have used it as a smoke screen to apparently insure democracy but also as a convenient tool to block certain parts of the population from voting perhaps by falsely accusing them of being criminals or things like that. The second reason is much more simple, democracy is supposed to be an anonymous secret vote, attempt to try and attach any kind of identification to the process are always going to ring alarm bells.
@conors4430
@conors4430 4 года назад
Dr. Sparrow LQ it also opens the door to, what happens if somebody forgets their card, what happens if they don’t have a card, what happens if a particular government decides a certain type of person can’t have a card unless they take a certain boxes that the government gets to create and fiddle with. Every person who is eligible to vote in the country should be automatically in the system without requiring them to percure something extra. Just creates hurdles for voting which people can take advantage of. At least that is my limited understanding
@NoviProleterijat

@@conors4430 Ok, let me explain how it is where I'm from. Criminals can vote here, having an ID card is almost mandatory because everything is regulated through them. Your banking, buying alcohol and cigarettes, prescriptions etc. So somebody not having the card is a ridiculous argument, at least here it is. Showing an ID before voting does not in any way make it less anonymous? You are only showing that you are the person you are saying that you are. The government can still track your vote if you're running your current system? Edit: Just saw ur second comment, We have two weeks to get to the polls, unless it's the last day of voting then yeah you're screwed if you forgot your card but honsetly that's your fault if you haven't managed to show up for 2 weeks and forgot your ID on the last day. All this will do is prevent the 1 count of voter fraud, but make the 3.5 million people have to buy and remember to bring, a photo ID. Even if you give ID's out for free, it will still reduce the number of people voting because they can't be asked to go through the hassle of getting one, or they send of the paperwork late, or the paperwork gets lost in the mail etc etc.

@pinkyfull
@pinkyfull 4 года назад
Because whenever those laws are enacted it disadvantages those already less likely to vote. Consider that to get a photo ID you have to have a physical address. So if you are homeless, for instance, you can't vote anymore. Just because you don't own a house doesn't mean you aren't interested in voting. Similarly people who are poor, or are migrants, or young, or don't travel, are also less likely to have a similar form of ID. Its discrimination to to make it just that little bit harder to vote. With disadvantaged people already less likely to vote there doesn't need to be more systems put in place to make it just that little bit harder. Voter fraud by way of claiming you are somebody else is essentially nonexistent. So it is solving a problem which doesn't exist whilst simultaneously making it harder for those already most under served to vote. If the united states is anything to go by its just a tool to ensure you keep power by keeping those who would vote against you out of the polling booth.

How the system works now? You have to register to vote, then you get a printed card (just text) sent to your house. You go to a polling station, hand a person a card then they cross you out on a register. So you don’t prove your ID you just have a card. In reality the picture ID is to stop people voting twice, foreign nationals mostly. Eg if someone’s name is translated into ‘Faze’ or ‘Fase’, they could vote twice, once under each spelling of their name. This is a simplistic example but hopefully you get the idea.

So when he really plans to implement them he should make them free for all, or at least free for elderly and people living on social care so that they have no problem with that and are not excluded from democracy. The other thing is, it's an additional hassle for people, a lot of them might say: _"Na, not worth it and nothing chances anyway"_ ... not realising, that their not-voting is empowering the vote of fanatics because their vote has more impacts. And one thing is sure, fanatics always vote. Over here in the Netherlands, it's been mandatory to provide photo ID (passport or driver's permit) before being allowed to vote for as long as I can remember... and I've been eligible to vote for decades! According to BBC: "Research in 2015 by the Electoral Commission, the independent body that sets the standards of elections in the UK, indicated that about 3.5 million citizens, or 7.5% of the electorate, did not have access to any approved photo ID. The research suggested that women are considerably less likely than men, and black people considerably less likely than white people, to have a driving licence.. ..." I think the controversial topic is weather requiring voter ID makes voting more safe or if it suppresses the voters that have no access to such ID. Similarly voting can be manipulated by many other means like making voting places hard/expensive to reach (people with less money may not travel to vote or have the money to do that) and so on.
@hoggif

Yes you do need ID for lots of other things. In my country you need id for voting but voting can be done very near you or even at home if you're unable to move well for example. I can still see why this in controversial topic.
