The Questionable Science Behind Sports 'Recovery' Tech

The recovery tech industry claims to help athletes bounce back after sports training. Players endorse everything from massage guns from makers like Theragun to cryo-chambers. But the science behind much of it is questionable--at best.

As a former pro athlete now working a 9 to 5, I get the skepticism shown based on the research. However, she answered the question when she said "...it only showed marginal gains.". Marginal gains IS what is being looked for. All people training are going to be equal to some degree. But that 1-2% better in a marginal gain makes the difference. Cyclist will pay $500 for a part that gives a 2 watt difference. She's measuring the value of that cost versus the average weekend warrior.
@Edprodesign1
@Edprodesign1 Год назад
Bold of you to assume, marginal gains mean 1-2% better, marginal gain in these studies when effectively carry out to real life is on the range of 0.001% specially on no peer review studies that is a very strong red flag, at that point the difference is so small that when the challenge is in front of you that 0.001% "benefit" disappeared.
@sknkwrksowner
@sknkwrksowner Год назад
@@Edprodesign1 You are so busy trying to win you didn't comprehend what I wrote. I said the results when applied are antidotal in real world for a weekend warrior. No peer review is needed. But thanks for trying to 'win' an expressed opinion that was not your own. ✌🏾

Fellow former-pro here too! I've used a number of these devices shown in the video, mainly the HyperIce products: Normatec boots, Hypervolt gun, vibrating foamroller, and their reusable ice pack. For me, the most beneficial was the Normatec boots. Felt like my legs were less fatigued after using them post-game, etc. The other ones seemed to alleviate temporarily but never enough to truly believe in them

I think it depends on whether they're good for your health or not... whether regular non-athlete fitness enthusiasts use them. For steroids/etc, there are health dangers associated with them and fitness people just don't see the benefit really. But for those that help make good health, I don't see why not.

If it looks like it does something, and famous players promote it, people will be more than willing to try it and dish out the money. Most people aren't going to be reading the studies on this stuff (if there are any). At least most of this stuff is aimed at sports recovery and doesn't seem damaging compared with pseudoscientific medicine that might stop people treating diseases properly.

Apparently it’s not that massage guns are ineffective. It’s just that there’s no evidence to support that it is effective. However there’s plenty of evidence suggesting that other massage techniques work. For example, vibration guns seem to work better than percussion guns

Years ago I went to my chiropractor... I told him I'm in pain from..... I was taking opioids that would cause the pain to come back worse than it was.. I told him I walk in the woods not in a hurry just getting blood flowing this helped more than opioid prescription. So we tried the tens unit,, af first that hurt muscles pulling tightly. But in a few minutes the muscles relaxed and the blood flow like walking in the woods ..this helped ... the body carries a volt and when the volt is broken the pain is real using the tens unit for shock waves helped I wished I could have be sedated and shocked at the same time like in hyperbaric chamber
