Great video! I could never understand why gamers go to great lengths to build a quiet computer, only to pair it with a mechanical keyboard that sound like a bunch of legos bouncing around in a plastic box. Maybe you could do a video showing how you mod a keyboard to make it even quieter.
Seems great. I can't stand loud keyboards, especially if they're not my own. Also a pain when someone's mic pics it up. I have a good friend who uses reds at his office he usually shared with a few other people and I've told him we'd have a serious problem if he sat next to me with that all day :'D
The switches with the box stems are literally called box stems or sometimes called dust-proof. I personally don't care about the wobble unless I can really feel it when typing. If you're planning on making more switch reviews, try focusing on what the typing experience is like and make a short sound test. On the switches, they look like they're using outemu molds, and combined with the price point, I'm a little worried with how will these switches hold up in the long run. The stock outemu red, blue, and brown switches are known to stop working over time after just a couple of weeks.
no, they're not called box stems. It's box switches. The reason why they're called box is because the switch assembly is in a dust/water resistant box. They're mistakenly called box because of the stems. As for future reviews, I did a soundtest, but you're right, maybe a keyboard sound test with the entire keyboard filled with the switch im reviewing is probably a good idea.
@@BootSequence Sure, they are classified as box switches because of the stems, but I usually avoid calling newer switches with boxy stems as box switches. The original box switches from Kailh is what I normally call box switches, like Box browns, or Box whites. I might just be old fashioned EDIT: Because Kailh specifically has box in the name for their box series of switches, it distinguishes that line from Kailh's other non-boxed switches. I know points behind why a box stem is designed, I've just encountered a lot of switches with box stem designs who sometimes call the stems as dust-proof Just a disclaimer, I might have sounded negative or aggressive with my first comment, I'm not very good at explaining my point sometimes
@@nytalix642 No, you misunderstand. BOX switches aren't called so because of the stems at all - it has nothing to do with the stems whatsoever. BOX switches from Kailh are specifically called such because the entire switch leaf & actuation bumper (a rubber piece, not another terminal leaf) _is literally enclosed in a dust & water-proof boxed enclosure_. Take apart a Kailh BOX and see. The square stems you see are correctly called Dustproof stems, because that's all they are! If you want to get technical, Kailh BOX switches also have Dustproof stems, and again, arent called Box switches because of them. The only difference is that Kailh uses their own specially designed dustproof stems to work with their BOXes & their clickbars.
Can I find a full-size wired keyboard frame (or keyboard) for the Phoenix switches ? Maybe a good one if possible, with volume knob or bar and with macro keys ... ?
If you are looking for budget silent switches take a look at Outemu Silent Grey (tactile), Outemu Silent Lemon (tactile), or Outemu Silent Peach (linear). If you have a bit more budget the Gazzew Boba U4s is regarded as the best silent tactile switch. Durock also has some fantastic silent switches, like the Durock Dolphin. Recently Akko has put out some very reasonably priced and great switches, they have a number that are silent (tactile and linear)
i vouch for boba u4. not only for the silence, but also for tactility. round bump is nice. and u4 is practically all bump. no pre/post travel, hence no wobble. nice.
Recently built a keychron k2 with boba u4 (68g springs) and akko double shot pbt caps. Keyboard feels amazing and its really quiet. It's perfect for the office and the tactility is amazing when typing on them.
I would love a direct comparison between these and the cherry MX silent reds. I have those on my keyboard at work but if these are even quieter that would be awesome.
Finally, an ACTUAL silent mechanical switch! It's not even that expensive, compared to other ones I've seen. What a great find and something I'll definitely look in to upgrade to, as I've always hated how loud any of the mechanic keys are in general. I can't believe you lasted 3 months on blues hehe
Really interesting, but personally I would have liked a little more variety in silent switches like alpacas silent and otemu silent switches. There are so many more though. The stem shape you described as bracket stems are used in box switches, I believe.
While you're swimming around in the mechanical keyboard community pool, have you come across any keyboards or keys that feature a half-width CAPS LOCK key? That's something IBM had in many of their early models to help avoid toggling CL on and off when typing, but none\very few of the current manufacturers make them like that these days. I wonder if it was maybe a patented idea that requires licensing to be used, and that's why it's not common. I'd love to get a replacement key for my K70 cos the gap between the CAPS LOCK and A is tiny :-/
That's called a stepped caps lock key. You can't just replace a normal caps lock keycap with a stepped one because the switch for the sepped keycap is not in the middle of the keycap and more to the left in the high part of tthe keycap.
@@MrIamsosmrt Thanks for this info. I hadn't heard that term before, so it's no wonder my searches for "half-width" keycaps didn't come up with anything!!
I just lubed my keyboard's cherry red silents... and wow theyre so much quieter now. I wonder what these switches would sound like lubed? Would they be the first sound absorbing switches? 😂
Super nice video! And I have Been there" after I started working from home! But dude - Have you tried Razers Red V.2. Switches?! They are so, so quiete and Pre-travel is 1.00 mm! I can write super fast without making any sounds! :-)
I really appreciate this video. You are the first one that I've seen who actually compared switches in this way to give a true understanding of how loud or quiet the switches are. Now I need to find out if the Gamakay has a 75% keyboard with a knob. LOL, more research.
I have some Silent Alpaca switches which I like and would also recommend you to try out. They are a bit pricey though and I did not have a chance to compare them to other silent switches
Good morning, I have purchased a Redragon K556 and want to swap the keys for the Phoenix ones. I a reading about scratchy pingy, can you tell me what this means? I type a lot on my keyboards, I just want quiet... please let me know... thank you
Great video! I have a question though, what are optical switches? And are these optical switches? I ask because I have only found hot swappable keyboards for optical switches. I don't know if this is a dumb question or not but I am new to keyboards and don't want to waste my money. Can someone knowledgeable help me?
I caught your video months late (new to your channel), but one of the reasons why I don't have a mechanical keyboard (even gaming). My daily driver is a SteelSeries Apex 150. I was researching to see if anything has changed in the world of switches, and man! I was glad to find this video! Clicky mechanical keyboards drive me insane (a bit of a sensory trigger)! I was thinking of getting a 60% keyboard and a custom key set, and the Gamakay Phoenix might be the clear winner for me!! Subscribed! 😀
I have a membrane logitech that's been through the ringer. I call it Old Faithful. I spilled coffee on it one time, so much that I lifted the keyboard by one corner and coffee started flowing out. I thought for sure it was done right there and then, but it still works. It's a bit clacky though, so I'm looking to replace it.
I bought them even tho a „keyboard expert“ from a discord server said they are bad (he never tested them tho). Today they arrived and I tested them out directly. I have never been so satisfied with Switches. Tested out kailh speed silver, gateron red, blacks etc and most common switches. Nothing comes close to the Phoenix ones. These switches are even more silent out of box than other switches with a ton of lube due to them being build so stable. Thinking of making a video on them too since there are barely any videos on RU-vid for these switches. Great video my friend ❤💪
Hi, could you update me on your experience with the switches? I found 2 youtube comments saying these fall apart in around a month and even less, is that true with your experience? Edit: spelling
@@d4zt1n I'd say no. If any improvement, maybe 5%? I also might be too tight on my parameters of what I like, but I could not tell an improvement to the feel.
@@nathanletourneau Wow. So it's not worth the the effort to lube them. 😅 Thanks for the input. 😉 BTW I also bought samples of the silent lemons (tactiles) and they are waaaaaaay scratchier than the peaches IMO.
Dude, you compared a single silent switch with some of the loudest shit on the internet. Like 1/3 of the comparisons were blue/clicky switches designed to be loud AF. What did you expect to happen?
Exactly what happened. I gave a point of reference for different types of switches, then the specific switch I'm talking about. This isn't a silent switch roundup at all, I never said or made it out to be that...
@@BootSequence My point is the title of the video. If you are going to compare this to switches that are literally designed to be loud, then of course this will be "the QUIESTEST." Literally none of the other switches you compared it to are also constructed to be silent. If the point of the video is to show how quiet they are in comparison to other products, you know to support the claim they are the QUIETEST, then you should be comparing them to other silent switches.
I would never use blue switches, they are the worst ones as far as sound goes, loud as hell, to the point of even interfering with music listening if you type something
I have the gammakay phoenixes.. and they are quite possibly the loudest silent switch I have ever tried. If you want absolute quiet, check out the outemu honey peaches. They're a little mushier than the phoenixes.. but SOOO much more quiet. If you want quiet with a better bottom out feel, then you should try the Wuque Studios WS silent linears.. which are quieter than the phoenix's.. and feel better bottoming out.
Thanks for the video. One of the only ones I can see regarding the phoenix switches. I would have liked a comparison against other silent switches along with their price points with and without mods. I can appreciate this is an effort though. For example, comparing something like alpaca V2 with lube and films and without would be interesting as these are around twice the price of the phoenixes. People keep recommending I need to lube/film alpacas due to stem wobble. Then a comparison with outemu peaches as they are similar price point as well as the new heartbeat linears. Unfortunately their shipping to the UK is too expensive from canonkeys so their value drops heavily but as you're US it would be interesting. I have purchased the phoenixes as they are the first switch I'll be using for a solderable PCB so less money wasted if I mess it up and the shipping was only £4. Cheers
Installed Outemu Silent Cream Yellow. It's insanely quiet. I couldn't hear it. Except the spacebar because of the support from sides. Put a band aid on the spacebar side supports and bike bearing oil. Now it all sounded the same.
Not really bashing on them. I'm using my typical indes force I use on keyboards, but if you want a side by side, my latest switch video has those switches in the roundup typing on them on the entire keyboard.
Hello everyone, maybe someone could help me out. I have a Corsair Platinum XT cherry blue keyboard and ohh my im so over it cause its so loud. But i have no idea what brand switches would work on my keyboard trying to find something quiet to game at home and not wake anyone up. Cherry red seems nice but so confused of what would work and what wont plus i know ill need to do a lot of desolder and resoldering haha
all 3 pins will! and those are 5 pins, so make sure yours has the little post holes that make it a 5 pin. Or you'll have to waste time cutting off the 2 plastic posts.
bought these because of your video.. as a fresh dad i can't use my thockiest build at night anymore so i build a new one with the pheonix switches and boy o boy these are silent af. im from Germany and delivery was like a week which is very fast for an order from China. They feel amazing too.. very satisfying! thank you for the video
If people want a really tactile and silent switch then get Gazzew Boba U4. If you want the most silent switch ever search for Bobazilla Switches test on RU-vid.
Looks like TKC knockoff to me... at least doesn't look like JWK. You should've film 'em & lube 'em first before talking 'bout stability and wobble if it's really affecting comfort. Light actuation force can cause accident presses for a lot of people I'm a Protozoa Moss on a Tex Shinobi myself, and it took me a while to get used to it.
they're pre lubed - I compared to other stock switches. so no point in re-lubing to give an advantage - Yeah, accidental presses are a thing. I do it all the time on my cherry red board, its a preference thing. I dont mind accidental presses while im resting my hand on the keyboard. While I type, it never happens.
@@BootSequence I found that video shortly after I commented! It looks like you preferred the Pegasus between the three, so I think I'm going to try them, despite how tempting it is to have a phoenix-themed keyboard part. ❤🔥
Does anyone know, if these switches will work with Glorious GMMK? Their website says that their barebones are compatible with Glorious, Gateron, Kailh, and Cherry switches. Thanks.
They should be. I have them in my GMMK pro and they work great. You could always contact glorious' customer support to see if you have a different gmmk model or something as well.
I have been using cherry mx blue switches for 4 years and I love them, I don't understanding why people complain about the sound, it ain't that loud at all, I'm using a tex shinobi keyboard, the one with the 8 raw thinkpad layout.
Oh yeah those sound nice. I currently use Kailh pink silent switches. The specs are similar between the two. The Kailh are nice though I'd actually like a bit more travel before registering a press. Looks like the Phoenix could be it. Nice video!
@@BootSequence also keep up the amazing content :D (could u review them, you seem unbaised compared to other sources, like how do they feel and sound, would help, thanks).
